Project four was interesting to me. I enjoyed being able to compare different styles of shoes that I own. It was difficult for me to discribe the shoes without using words that aren’t used to typically describe shoes. This project also helped me understand how to use guides in indesign and how to evenly organize the page to have even spaces. I feel this helped when creating my moodboard for project five. My project five moodboard incorporates the many different colors I want to use in my progress journal and the different textures I want to incorporate. I am excited to continue piecing together my journal and placing my photos and projects into the templete.

Project three took a lot of planning. When assigned the words business duck, I had a lot of different ideas. After I had decided on three different duck designs, I narrowed it down to two for the final project. Transfering my design from tracing paper to adobe illustrator was difficult. I couldn’t figure out how to make smooth curved lines and it was causing my sketch to look angular, instead of round like my sketch has looked. After trying to fix the design as much as I could, I turned it in for progress critique. During progress critique, I was told that my tie design was not as noticable since the rest of my duck had opened places as well. I redid the design by closing the duck and moving the tie further away from the duck design. I feel this made the logo look more seamless and it ended up being my favorite design of the two. With the second design, I moved the feet over to make the design come together better and changed the placement of the words.

Starting the design for Project three was difficult for me starting off. I have the words ‘business duck’, and I did not know where to start. The only thing that came to mind for a logo for business duck was Aflac, which is already a company. After finding a few different duck reference photos, I started to create rough sketches of different duck designs. The three designs I narrowed down were a block duck, one of the words ‘work’ in the shape of the ducks body, and an outline of the animal. I feel I should change the outline duck to have a  briefcase or to make it look more business. My plan is to expand on my ideas and hope to be able to combine business and duck into a cohesive design. When putting these designs into illustrator, it was different than photoshop and indesign to learn how to use. I had to watch many tutorials and work with the program to learn how to use the program properly.

The artist that I picked from the Graphic Eye exhibit at the State museum was Tom Stanley. I chose his acrylic artwork called “Night Light,” this was done in 2008. This piece drew my attention because there are so many different components to this artwork. It was one of the first pieces that I encountered while going through the exhibit. Although it is a more neutral gray and not a bright, vibrant color, it drew my attention. I have ADHD so normally with art, I get lost or almost bored staring at traditional art and design because there is only one element to focus on. But with this piece there were many different elements and pieces on the canvas. My favorite part of the piece is how there are two large circles in the center of the canvas. There are only three other circles in the entire piece, but they are blocked off to the side of the canvas. Tom Stanley is from Rock Hill, SC. Where he is from is another reason, I chose this artist. Me being from Rock Hill myself, I felt drawn to this piece and to explore this artists work. He went to the University of South Carolina in 1980, receiving an MA in Applied Art History, and an MFA in Painting. Tom Stanley is a visual artist, but I would classify his art piece that I chose as fine art. I would describe it as fine art because he is showcased in many different fine art museums and his work is more refined. He is the first gallery director of Winthrop University Galleries and is a chair of Winthrop’s Department of fine Arts. When looking up history about Tom Stanley, I found that he was born in Fort Hood, Texas and has lived in Rock Hill, SC for the last 30 years. His artwork has been exhibited in over ten locations around North and South Carolina.

This project was harder for me to work on because for the last two weeks I have been sick, but through all the demos and videos provided I found it easier to produce this poster. At first I was worried that it would be hard to figure out indesign since it is a new program, but there was a lot of options to teach me how to use the program. 

Going to the poster, the sketches that I started with were all over the place. When we were first assigned this project I didn’t know which of the quotes I could see as a poster. In my original sketches I had chosen three different quotes to sketch ideas too. Even when I was sketching I still didn’t have a clear picture in my head about the overall poster design. After a few sketches for each quote, I decided I liked the Helen Keller quote, “Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.”

A More Beautiful Question By Warren Berger

This was my favorite poster from the gallery because it drew me to it with its color and design. I have personally never read this book, but I heard that this was a great read and very inspiring. I liked how there was diversity in the poster and how its in a thought bubble.  I feel the original books design is more boring, and yes depicts the question aspect, but doesn’t grab the attention of the reader. Whereas this book cover does draw in readers. I feel this cover sparks a larger question for readers about what the more beautiful question is.

At the beginning of week one, when this project was assigned, I was excited. I like to listen to my surroundings and this project just added onto that. Throughout the week, I heard lots of things that could potentially become one of my snippets. Although I heard a lot of different snippets, it was hard for me to turn them into digital artworks. Majority of the snippets weren’t long enough or out there enough to spark a creative idea. It took me a few days before I found a snippet that actually felt like it was a good one to use. This was the “I can’t charge” snippet shown in the first photo beside the thumbnails I drew. I heard a girl talking about how tired she was and she felt like she could charge. As soon as I heard this I could just her charging like she was sleeping or her having to plug in, in order to become more awake. This sparked a whole sluu of ideas. I heard my family talking about how they were almost over the hill and I thought it was a great way to literally showcase someone going over a hill. The last snippet I chose was about pigs in a blanket. I chose this one because I heard these guys talking about how pigs in a blanket were his favorite snack to eat at family gatherings. Apparently his friends had never hear of this and literally thought he was talking about a pig, in a blanket. This made me laugh, but sparked me to create an actual pig in a blanket to depict the term. I am happy with how this first project came out and can not wait for the projects in the future.
