Many people think Van Gogh only sold one piece during his lifetime (The Red Vineyards), and I guess technically that’s true, but this one was was sold as well, only, it was sold by Paul Gauguin.
Vincent painted this for his friend in 1888, but soonafter, their friendship deteriorated, and Gauguin parted ways with the now priceless Self-Portrait.
