What I learned when my Best friend (My Siberian Husky) Died To preface this story a bit, I had a giant 107 pound, Siberian Husky named Deacon for almost 15 years. I raised him from the day he turned 6 weeks old, until he died. He was literally my best friend of all time….yes, even over human friends. In fact (Funny note) I had a girlfriend during his last year of life who asked me “who would you save if someone had a gun pointed at me and Deacon?”…I just turned and walked away (while hearing her gasp in amazement at my reaction....I couldn’t bare to tell her, Deacon would be kept alive at whatever cost necessary…lol). I literally loved that dog more than most humans...probably more than ALL humans if I need to be honest. He was by me through some very hard times, and he always loved me; still slept by me every night, laid his head across my lap until I loved on him, and even nudged my arm and licked me if my head was down and crying. Honestly, I still cannot walk down the dogfood/doggy treat aisle. It breaks my heart. Flash forward: It was 2012, and I was still with the same girl I mentioned before (Let’s call her “H”). Deacon had recently had a seizure out of nowhere and his back right leg was swelling. The Vet said there was a growth blocking the circulation in Deacon’s leg. He eventually got to where he couldn’t get up, so I brought him his food, and carried him out to use the bathroom several times a day. He was dying, and I had to come to grips with that. It’s hard to admit (being a 6’8” 280 pound man) but I cried like a baby all day that Sunday as I realized I had to take him to the vet so he could be put to sleep the next day. It killed me as I carried him to my truck, loaded him up, and then then unloaded him and carried him into the vet’s office. “H” was there with me. The Doc asked me if I wanted to stay in the room or leave…IU stayed until he was gone. “H” watched while I held his paw, and then hugged his neck, while he took his final breath. I sobbed harder than ever before.
