Evaluation

In this unit I feel I created outcomes that were appropriate to my initial intentions going into the unit, I wanted to create some kind of solution that limits the amount of consumer items that are misrepresentative of the cultures they are inspired by, and have been created on a basis of exploitation or ignorance. I went on a journey of a mix of ideas, approaches, possible outcomes and areas to focus, but I feel I would be happy seeing the project I came out with, at the start of the term, knowing the kind of project I wanted to create. 

This term, similarly to my last 2, I have struggled to find my footing in a project, and I often loose motivation or passion for the projects I have started to create. In this instance for this term, I began to create a browser extension, despite not using them, and despite wanting to move away from UX/UI for this submission for variety and expansion of different skills. I think I went down this path as I felt it was the correct solution that made the most sense at the time, and should have considered more if I should be creating it, if its not something I would have been proud to place in my portfolio. I hope to avoid these creative blocks and places I get myself stuck in my 3rd year, by continuing to experiment with concept projects during the summer, and consider more what work I love to create, and what skills I want to develop. 

Additionally, this term I was passionate about experiential marketing. I have seen loads of creative solutions involving public participation and huge exciting installations, and I really wanted to create one, as I knew it would be something I was proud to place in my portfolio, and a new area I wanted to explore. My outcomes unfortunately do not display this intention. I created a concept LED lighting system, which I do feel would be beautiful and successful in execution, having known and researched Gen Z, I know this would become an instagrammable and Tiktok photo opportunity that people would share and visit, but it’s not what I wanted to create beginning the unit. The reason I think I was unable to achieve this intention to the extent I wanted to, was a lack of research, and I think also a lack of bravery to work outside of guidelines I had previously. Going forward into new projects, I want to consider better the body of work I want to have at the end, and make sure I achieve this with better planning and dedicating time to the right areas. 

However, I think I made a strong and visually impressive Festival Brand Identity that I am proud to place in my portfolio. I feel my style as a designer starting to lend towards bright digital maximalism, which is exciting to me, and I feel myself improve with this every project. I feel all my assets have consistency in visual attributes and quality of execution. I think I succeeded in this Brand Identity by showing it off across a large selection of outcomes, showing its versatility, and showing how successful it could be in the real world. I would be very excited to work on a project like this after uni in industry, so I am happy with how I have developed my skillset in this area.

Solution Visualisation, Self Made Mockup

I wanted to create a visualisation of how my Urban Marketing Interventions would communicate. Althought this representation  is more clustered than any of these elements would be in placement, an appropriate mockup was hard to find, or a way of representing them.

I showed a set of billboards, floor stickers and LED lights combined before the London skyline. This shows how the sizes would work together as well, the LED light trail being mostly human height.

This was not the original marketing solution I imagined, as I had originally intended to do something more interactive. But I felt it was best to focus on the festival branding and cohesivity, than overstretch myself on a huge concept.

Floor Signs

In combination with my billboard, posters, lighting and murals, I created a floor sticker system to pair with these elements, to direct interested parties to the festival. On the floor nearby these urban interventions, people will find a collection of plain circles in vinyl, of the colours of Honour, and one of the circles will point towards the Southbank Centre, and advertise an element of the Festival.

Many people in London will know where Southbank is, so the floor stickers will point them towards it, but not follow through on the entire journey as it is not nessasary. But I thought it was a fun encouragement to attend the festival, and would be eyecatching placed on the floor where you do not often find advertisement.

Murals

My Murals were designed as both a marketing solution, and as a way to decorate Southbank for the festival. Festivals are associated with bold colour and excitement, so bringing Southbank to life with the branding of Honour, will be really important.

My murals are derived from my imagery and overall brand identity.

I designed 3 landscape artworks that could be translated to walls or other architecture using paints or vinyl, depending on the surface quality.

Final Banners

My final designs for banners. I feel my type and image works better in a longer size, and that the 2 designs would work well together. Although you cannot read Honour clearly, this matches my consistent branding of separating the word, across many of my assets.

Banners

I designed flags/banners to hang from Southbank Centre, to advertise the festival. I think this marketing method will work well, as these flags are an instant visual cue that an event/festival is taking place, where billboards can be for anything. Passers by would see them, and could be interested and want to find out more by the exciting colour palette.

LED Lights, Marketing Idea

Instead of using mockups to try and communicate my idea, I created a rough concept using 3D rendering in Illustrator. Althought this is not very realistic looking, I felt for a pitch to Southbank Centre, this gets my point across well, without the expense of cutting the signs for a pitch. I think these signs would be around half a meter in width, and height depending on each design, big enough to be able to be seen and read from a high up placement.

Festival Signage

One of the good outputs I had seen from festival brand identities from the likes of Craig and Karl, was signage systems to get around. If I were to hold my festival at Southbank Centre, there would be navigation around there to get from exhibition halls and lecture theatres, however people attending the festival may not know where each Honour event is held. I created these signs as designs for acryclic laser cut signs, as additional navigation around the festival, so it is as clear as possible how to navigate each part of it e.g pop up shops, tickets, exhibition. Additional ones that could be creates would be toilets, food, talks.

Stickers

Another additonal output I made was stickers. I felt there placing would be free on the door, or included in tote bags. Gen Z like to customise with stickers on their laptops, phone cases, bedroom doors, walls etc. A visual reminder of the festival on their posessions will remind them of the brand if repeating festivals would occur or if the brand were to make any additional future events. I also just feel this is a fun output that adds to the festival feeling as a freebie.

Tote Bag Print

I took inspiration from my poster design and created an altered version of this for a tote bag print. I decided that this would be a good output, as overcrowded as the world is with tote bags, people love them, especially from events and festivals. I focused on my pattern and illustration for the print as the primary focus, and included the honour logo and slogan as secondary information.

Tickets

I made designs for the tickets that people would be sent in the mail after purchasing online, or would be able to obtain on the door. I want to make this the rough size of a credit card, so it can fit in the phone case or wallet so it is easily accessible.

Posters

I revisited a previous idea I had for a poster layout, and redesigned it with my new brand guidelines. I wanted to create a tile printed effect with my posters, so that when they are arranged they can be read across eachother. I created a layout so that the 2nd ‘O’ of ‘HONOUR’ is split across the first row and 2nd row.

I made 2 versions of my posters, one with a white background with black text, and one with a black background and white text. I thought this black and white heavy contrast looked good with the bright blue, pink and yellow shades, and that the 2 poster designs complimented eachother.

Brand Identity

I refined the terms for my brand identity so all my designs going forward would hold the same type and image quality, to create a strong cohesive brand.

I defined my slogan as ‘Festival of Diverse Design’ with an emphasis on Diverse in Europa Light and Regular. I felt this was a fitting slogan and encompassed the purpose and intention of the festival.

I redefined my colour pallete. In aims to achieve the brightest colours I could achieve for printing my posters, I was inspired by pure CMYK colour palette, so I took the yellow, magenta and cyan shades for this. Due to this, I feel like it lends itself to designers who work with print, so further identify the festival as a festival for designers.

My 3 image qualitys I will be working with is the circle grids, my patterns and my illustrations. My patters and images will hold the same quality of the black and white outline, and will be placed over the circle grid when they are applied. I will be sticking to these guidelines when creating all of my outputs.
