FMP side scroller preview
This is the demo for my 2d side scroller game i have been working on
Problems that I have faced in my project
I found blueprints very hard to understand considering i have never used this new method of coding games, it was very hard to program my game and it was very time consuming and i think this i the reason why i fell behind my schedule, i have attempted to follow tutorials on YouTube but they where very limited and basic, so it was hard to find tutorial that would help me produce a 2d game that has all the mechanics that i wanted it to have.
Another problem that i have faced is that it was very difficult for me to focus on my project when i had various of other assignments to do so i feel like that slowed me down on producing my game.
Creating a game by yourself is a lot harder than i expected because i didn't realise how long it would take to animate and colour character so this limited me on how many enemy i could produce for my game
Environment
This the concept art for my level 1 in my game, because this game is based on a different dimension i have decided to create the impossible like floating islands in the sky but what i felt about My level 1 design is that its too small and plain so i have decided to create tree and grass and various other objects like temples, houses,Easter Island Heads, to make the level look better
At first i was going to keep my environment still and lifeless but i looked at many 2D games and some of the good looking 2D games i looked at their environment was animated and i believe that played a big part of making there game look good because it adds life to the game, making it more appealing to look at if the environment are animated. I decided to animate some of my environment to make it stand out for the players.
Trees
The reason why i animated the trees is because i am going to re use some of the trees but i feel like because i am re using the trees the level might look a bit cheap and boring to look at so i decided to animate the trees making it look a bit more interesting even though i am re using the trees to fill out a bit of my level so that it doesn't look plain.
I have also Animated my grass and the reason why is because its so that i can create an illusion that there is wind in my game making it more realistic and it looks better than just having grass that doest move.
I Also added more objects to my environment to make it look less plain like for an example i painted a mountain to put in the background to cover up the plainness in the sky.I also started to create houses to show that the planet the characters is on isn't lifeless and it makes the environment look more interesting.
Enemy
I have Created an enemy for the first level of my game, My enemy is a steam punk looking robot, here are some Reference images that i have used to created my enemy for my game.
I didn't make my enemy as big as the robot i used for reference, i just decided to make him the same size as the player because i wanted to make the first boss very easy so that the player can quickly get used to the controls and play around a bit until they are comfortable and are ready to progress through the story.
This is the First Enemy That will get the player ready and trained for more intense battle, as you can see i haven't made him very intimidating and he looks quite wimpy but this is on purpose as he is not a very strong enemy.
I have also created an Attack for the enemy which is a charge up punch even, though he is suppose to be weak, i have decided to still make his moves interesting. So instead of animating a normal punch i thought of something more interesting to animate which is a charge up punch because i feel like this is a better and more creative move set for an enemy.
HUD design
i have decided to keep the HUD simple so i created 3 hearts that represents the players health bar and i have also gave 3 hearts for the enemy AI which also represents there health bar. I feel like that the health bar being hearts is a very effective and well known Health HUD as there are many new and old games that uses hearts to identify the characters and enemy health, this is why i have decided to use it.
I have also animated the characters health bar making it a lot more appealing and interesting, this is because i am aiming to make my game look very appealing
Jumping animation
A jumping animation i need for my games in order for the player to be able to get on platforms that are placed higher than the characters. The first level wont introduce any platform that is placed higher up than the player but the other levels i plan to make later in the game will so this is why i decided to animate the character jumping.
Rolling animation
The control for the player to be able to role will be (I) The reason why i decided to pick i as the key that activates the rolling animation is because its close to the other keys and its a comfortable position for the players hand to place on the keyboard. The reason why i have decided to add rolling as one of the players move set is because i feel like there needs to be a way that the player can avoid getting hit because this game is going to be a hardcore side scroller game, where you die easily and its based on dark-souls and 2d games like dark souls(deaths Gambit, Salt and sanctuary), these games evolve a lot of dodging and skills so that is why i decided to add it in to my game.
standing still animation is need so that when the player is not touching any of the controls the Character remains still, so it give the player full control of the character. I was going to have a un-animated still stance for the character, but then i have decided that it will make my character look lifeless so this is why i decided to animate his hair flowing in the wind and his scarf being blown by the wind. I have decided to change the Standing still animation because i feel like it doest look as smooth as the other animation, but i will try and finish everything else first so i can get all the game mechanics working, then i will go back and edit the animations that i feel that needs editing.
Main character animation without colour
I have been experimenting with my animation. changing little things to make it look a lot better so when its put in my game it looks really good. So as you can see the top animation is just the main character running and the button animation is the character running with some speed and smoke effect making the character look like he is running really fast.
Running animation with colour
I have edited my running animation the top animation i my original running animation and the button one is the edited one, as you can see the edited one is a lot smoother and looks much cleaner than the original one. The reason why i needed to edit the original animation is because I want my game to look appealing i didn't want poor quality animation so i tried to make the assets for my game as good as i could make them
Fade Away animation
i love this arts tyle and i would like to have a similar art style to this animation
Death gambit is a game that i will be using for reference as I want my game to be similar to this game.
Salt and Sanctuary is a game that I want my game to play alike because it has that dark soul side-scroller feel to it and this is the type of game i want to make..

This link to an animation tutorial video will show me various skills to animate so I can make the animation in my game become really smooth and realistic which will improve the gameplay of my game.
Constraints in my project?
The constraints in my project are that I am unable to produce a full game as there isn't enough help it is just me working on the project. If I were to make a full game I will need many others to assist me in this project which means I am quite limited on how much I can produce within this project.
How I have decided to overcome this problem
This is why I'm only going to create 1 level for the game and make it a demo instead of a full game and when I post it on the social websites and if I get enough likes and my audience wants me to make the full game I will work on it after the FMP is finished.
Some of the work I will have to juggle from college and at home as there are programs that are unavailable to me at home as I don't have enough money to pay for it and there are programs that you are unable to install on the college's computers so I will have to juggle my work.
How I have decided to overcome this problem
I will make a schedule of what I need to do at work and what I need to do at college so when I go to college I will bring the right equipment to work on something I am only capable of doing at college and same applies for when I am at home
I am unable to obtain better software's at home as I don't have enough money to afford to pay for the full version of the software and I can't use a trial version of the software because they always limit you on how much you can do.
How I have decided to overcome this problem
I will have to split the work that can only be done at college and the work that can only be done at home, I could also see if there is student version of the software's that I can afford to buy as student versions of software's are normally free or a lot cheaper.
Legal and ethical consideration
Everything that I am currently doing is completely legal s I haven't stolen any software or downloaded any cracked software I am using legal software to create my game. I haven't taken any assets of other games and I have been following the copyright law so that I won't get caught up in illegal doings, I have also only used references from other game to develop my idea as this is completely acceptable because I am not copying anyone's ideas only taking people's and companies ideas as reference.
There is nothing in my game that will contain any insults towards religion and sexuality, the closest thing my game will have to religion is that there is a holy knight and the religion in my game is made up so there won't be any insulting towards other religions.
I have made sure that in my story that I have written for my game there isn't anything that goes against religion and race or being bias in any sort of way, this is so I can avoid getting hate and keep things legal and most importantly to make my audience happy.
My game doesn't insult people's cultures or a race of people so it's completely acceptable and it will certainly not insult others as it doesn't contain those sort of content in my game.
In my game, I will warn users that the game is aimed at 16 and older this is so that I can avoid any complaints about an underage playing a game that's extremely unsuitable or them because of the gore and horror that the game contains.
When I create my game I will create a trademark which is a way people will recognize my work but I will make sure that it is unlike the trademarks from other companies as its illegal to have similar trademarks from other company because it will cause mass confusion and it will be hard to identify which company produced what if you were to have similar trademark.
expectations and goals for the project
I am hoping that I am able to create at least one level in the game with all the mechanics and assets working in the game. My goal is to release this on a website and get known for making this game and I will hopefully create a finished version of this game after the project. I also set myself a goal which is to finish 1 full level of the game I am making withing the deadline, to show i am capable of meeting deadlines whilst working to a good standard/
The main purpose of choosing this 2D game as my project is because it's a step forward for people to notice my abilities and capability.
