There wasn’t much that could break Maya’s heart. She put up a shield, a full on forcefield of armor protecting the tainted lines of her cracked heart. She was fierce, hard, tough. And she was proud of that. Nothing could hurt her.
Her phone chimed, informing her she had a new text, and just like that all the good, the light, and the hope in her life disappeared as quickly as he did that one day after high school when he just left. It was that text. That one stupid text from Riley that changed it all. That reversed any and all progress she thought she was making with moving on from Lucas, obviously she wasn’t doing a very good job, because when she read the text her heart crumbled.
She remembers it so clearly—the beginning—"Hi, I’m Maya. You’re really cute!“ And the end, where all she has to remember of their downfall is hushed whispers and tears dropping down her cheeks like rain falling from the sky during a harsh storm. She wishes the clouds would’ve cleared from the sky and the rain would have stopped for even just one small second for her to see things clearly. Maybe then, she would’ve been able to stop him from packing up and leaving everything behind to start new, to start without her.
But she didn’t stop him from leaving everything behind. She didn’t stop him and now it’s too late and he’s too far gone. He’s far gone with someone else, somebody new.
She crawls into bed and loud sobs escape from her small body. She wonders if there was anything that this girl gives to Lucas that she couldn’t, she thinks and thinks until her brain hurts, and she eventually passes out from the heartache.
She wakes up a few hours later due to a constant ringing on her phone.
“What.” She snaps, not bothering to check the caller because she knows only one person would even be attempting to bother her with the recent news of Lucas’ engagement.
Well, that wasn’t who she was expecting.
“Lucas?” Her voice is small, tender, most of all, it’s scared and held back, like she’s afraid to show how hurt she’s been because of him.
“Yeah, yeah, it’s me. Uh, sorry for calling without warning or anything. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” He sounds genuine. She wants to reach through the phone and slap him.
“Make sure I’m okay?” She laughs bitterly. “Nothing about me is okay, Lucas. You should know that. You left, remember?”
“Yeah…. I remember.” He replies after a few minutes of silence.
“You want to know what the worst part of this all is? I still had hope for us. I still had hope.” A lonely tear falls down her cheek. “I thought maybe one day you would come back to me because that’s just how you and I work, we always find our way back to each other no matter what.”
“I guess I know better now.”
