There’s this misconception that the hooded figure who watches your concert with Shyren will only appear during a murder run. This isn’t true! The hooded figure will appear in any run where Papyrus is dead, which I actually think is worse in a way.

#SANS IS GOING TO KICK UR ASS

No see, that’s one of the most heartbreaking things about a neutral run. [SPOILERS] As long as at least one monster is alive, Sans won’t fight you. He’ll let you go. You can kill Papyrus for no good reason and leave everyone else alive, and Sans will let you go.

He will only fight you if you kill everyone (and even then, you practically have to force him to do it - Sans does not want to fight). Otherwise all he’ll do is hide and grieve until he judges you, after which he’ll go back into hiding. During his judgment, he’ll ask you why you killed his brother (essentially)… or call you a murderer. That’s all Sans will ever do to you for killing Papyrus.

(Another tragic detail: When Papyrus is alive, if you reload after Sans’s judgment a few times, he’ll sass you about what level you’re at in more detail, as he can tell you’re reloading the game. If Papyrus is dead, however, Sans will only ask you why you killed him. And you can reload his judgment all you want, but Sans will always say the same thing, over and over. He’ll always ask you why you killed Papyrus.)
