The first thing Hoseok noticed after leaving his studio that night was how quiet the building had become.
The usual sounds were still there, the faint hum of the air conditioning, the occasional footsteps of staff members still finishing their work, the distant sound of music coming from another room where someone was still practicing, but compared to the energy of the day, everything felt almost still.
His studio door remained slightly open behind him, the warm light from inside spilling into the hallway, his computer still displaying an unfinished track, several layers of music waiting for him to return, but he had already abandoned the song for something else.
Hoseok looked down at his phone again, the screen showing Hoshi’s latest practice update.
He had watched it so many times that he already knew every second, the moment Hoshi adjusted his footing, corrected his posture.
The moment your voice could faintly be heard from behind the camera but now, he wasn’t watching because of the choreography anymore. He was watching because he finally understood.
The mysterious choreographer everyone talked about, the person known only through recommendations and whispers between dancers, the one who never showed their face but somehow left a mark on every person they taught... Was the same person who had stood beside him in an elevator.
The same person who had looked up at him with complete confidence despite their height difference and casually said,
"Eyes up here, big guy."
Hoseok covered his mouth, laughing quietly to himself as he leaned against the hallway wall.
"How did I not realize?"
It wasn’t like you had tried to trick him, you weren’t wearing anything dramatic, weren’t hiding behind a crowd. You were simply being yourself and somehow, that made it worse because now he knew you were real.
You weren’t just a rumor or a name attached to incredible choreography. You were someone walking through the same buildings, entering the same rooms, riding the same elevators.
Someone close enough for him to find yet somehow, impossible to reach.
The next morning, the practice room was already alive. The sound system played quietly while the members stretched across the mirrored floor, their reflections moving along the walls as they prepared for another rehearsal.
Water bottles were scattered near the speakers, towels rested on chairs, and the familiar smell of practice filled the room.
Hoseok stood near the mirror, adjusting the sleeves of his jacket while checking his phone. Again and Jimin noticed immediately, he always did.
"You know you've been staring at your phone for almost five minutes, right?" Jimin asked while sitting on the floor, stretching his legs and watching Hoseok through the mirror.
Hoseok looked up. "I haven't."
Jungkook, who was tying his shoelaces nearby, immediately laughed. "Hyung, that was the fastest lie I've ever heard."
Hoseok turned toward him. "I'm not lying."
Jimin smiled while taking a drink of water. "You're waiting for another update."
Hoseok looked away. "I'm just interested in the choreography."
Jungkook raised an eyebrow at his retort "The choreography that you watched during lunch?"
"It was research."
The room went silent for a moment then everyone laughed.
Hoseok sighed. "What?"
Jimin shook his head, smiling. "Nothing. It's just funny how you call it research every time you don't want to admit you're curious."
"I'm interested in dance."
"We know," Jungkook replied, standing up. "But you're also interested in the person teaching it."
Hoseok immediately looked away which was enough of an answer.
Pledis always felt different depending on the time of day. In the early mornings, the building carried a quieter atmosphere, sunlight passing through the large windows and reflecting against the polished floors while staff members walked around with coffee in hand, preparing for another busy schedule.
By afternoon, the entire place changed, the elevators constantly opened and closed. Artists moved through the hallways with managers, trainees carried bags and equipment between practice rooms.
Music leaked through the glass walls, creating a mixture of different songs and voices from different rooms, and somewhere inside that building, you continued doing what you always did.
Dance, teach, repeat... with a side of sarcasm and teasing
The practice room you shared with Hoshi had slowly become familiar, mirrors covering one wall reflected every movement, wooden floors carried marks from countless rehearsals.
The speaker near the corner played the music while your laptop sat beside it, ready to replay every mistake.
Hye-jin occupied the small table near the entrance, surrounded by her laptop, her phone, and a growing list of schedules she was organizing.
Hoshi stood in the middle of the room, breathing heavily after another attempt. His towel rested around his neck, his hair slightly damp, but the determination in his eyes never disappeared.
"I think that one was good."
You watched the replay on the laptop screen. "It was better."
Hoshi immediately frowned. "Better?"
"Yes."
"So not good?" He said with a tilt of his head.
"You almost lost your balance."
Hoshi pointed at you. "But I recovered."
"You recovered because your body panicked."
Hye-jin laughed quietly from the corner and Hoshi immediately looked at her. "You laughed."
"I didn't."
"You definitely did."
Hye-jin continued typing. "I was breathing."
"That was a laugh."
You walked back toward the center of the room and adjusted the music. "Again."
Hoshi looked at the ceiling. "That word follows me everywhere."
"And that mistake follows you everywhere."
He looked offended but he moved back into position because despite all the complaints, he listened. That was why his improvement was obvious.
You weren’t teaching him how to copy your style, you were teaching him how to understand movement. The clips Hoshi posted afterward only made the mystery grow. People noticed the difference, they noticed the control.
They noticed how his movements became cleaner, how his confidence became more controlled but more importantly, they noticed the person behind the improvement.
During another break, Hoshi sat on the floor with his back against the mirror, scrolling through his phone while drinking water.
"They're asking about you again."
You looked up from the footage you were editing. "Ignore them."
Hoshi laughed. "You always say that."
"Because it works." You said as you adjusted your cap to hold your hair.
Hye-jin looked up from her laptop. "No, it doesn't."
You looked at her and she just shrugged. "It just makes them more curious."
Hoshi smiled. "She's right."
You sighed. "Unfortunately."
That was the same reason Hoseok kept watching because before, you were only a mystery. Now you were someone he had met, someone he had spoken to, someone who had no idea how much attention they had gathered and somehow, that made him even more curious.
The first time he almost found you again happened when he wasn’t even looking. Hoseok had just finished talking with Woozi and Seungcheol near the recording rooms, the three of them discussing music production, schedules, and how their recent projects were coming along.
The hallway was quieter in that area, away from the main practice rooms where sound of footsteps echoed softly... Then he saw you.
A familiar cap and posture, the same way of moving so his steps stopped. This time, he knew... It was you.
He moved before he even thought but then a group of trainees turned the corner, carrying equipment and talking loudly about their rehearsal.
The narrow hallway suddenly filled.
"Sorry."
"Excuse us."
Hoseok stepped aside, waiting only a few seconds but when they finally passed... You were gone. Again as he stared down the empty hallway.
Seungcheol, who had stopped behind him, quietly asked, "Did you lose them again?"
Hoseok looked back. "How did you know?"
Seung-cheol glanced toward the empty space. "You have the same expression every time."
Hoseok sighed. "This is ridiculous."
The second time was worse because he heard you. Not even through a video nor through his phone. Actually there, your voice came from one of the practice rooms.
"Don't force the movement." Hoseok stopped walking, the hallway suddenly felt quieter, his hand almost reached toward the door.
Almost but he stopped because what was he supposed to say?
Hello, I have been watching your videos for weeks and I accidentally met you before knowing who you were?
It sounded ridiculous but before he could decide, the door opened and Hoshi walked out, wiping his sweat with a towel.
"Hoseok hyung?"
Hoseok immediately smiled. "Oh, hey."
Hoshi looked surprised. "I didn't know you were here."
Hoseok glanced inside the room but you were already gone. You had left through the other side.
Again-- The third time was the one that truly frustrated him because he saw you leaving, saw you near the entrance and the car waiting outside. So he started walking faster but by the time he reached the doors, the car had already disappeared down the street.
Hoseok stood under the building lights, staring at the empty road then he looked back inside. "Why are you so impossible to catch up to?"
The funniest part was... You weren’t avoiding him, you didn’t even know. Eventually, the answer came from someone else, Hoshi.
After practice, the hallway outside the studio carried the tired atmosphere that only appeared after hours of rehearsal. The members of Seventeen had gathered nearby, resting before leaving.
Seungkwan sat on the floor scrolling through his phone, laughing at something he saw. Mingyu leaned against the wall, stretching his arms. Jeonghan sat on a bench, watching Hoshi drink water with an amused expression. Wonwoo stood nearby, quietly listening.
"You know you're becoming famous for suffering, right?" Seungkwan said while showing Hoshi his phone.
Hoshi looked confused. "What?"
"The comments."
Hoshi looked down. "Why?
"Because everyone knows you’re being trained hard."
Hoshi laughed. "They’re exaggerating."
Jeonghan smiled. "You defended them very quickly."
Hoshi paused then everyone laughed and that was when Hoseok approached. "Hey."
Hoshi looked up. "Hyung."
They talked normally at first., Hoseok asked about practice. Hoshi explained the improvements and as he talked about the difficult sections, the changes, the things that finally started feeling natural.
Then Hoseok finally asked the question he had been carrying. "So..."
Hoshi looked at him. "So?"
Hoseok hesitated. "Your choreographer."
The reaction was immediate, Seungkwan lowered his phone, Jeonghan smiled and Mingyu looked interested.
Hoshi raised an eyebrow. "What about them?"
Hoseok tried to sound casual. "How do people reach them?"
Hoshi studied him. "Why?"
Hoseok looked away for a moment. "I'm curious."
Jeonghan laughed softly. "Everyone says that when they're very curious."
Hoseok sighed. "I met them before." The group became quiet.
Hoshi blinked twice as if to clear his thoughts. "You did?"
Hoseok nodded. "And I didn't realize...?"
By then, you were only a short distance away, walking through the hallway with Hye-jin.
The final lessons were approaching, the contract was almost complete and that's why you were only looking for Hoshi to discuss the remaining schedule. Until you heard it, someone was asking about you.
You stopped while the hallway continued moving around you. The elevator doors opened, people walked past, music echoed from another room but for a moment, everything felt distant.
Hye-jin looked at you. "You heard that too."
You nodded slowly. "He's asking about us."
She watched your expression then smiled which you immediately noticed. "Why are you smiling?
Hye-jin adjusted the strap of her bag. "Because this is interesting."
"Interesting?"
"Very."
You looked toward the practice room. "Someone is trying to find us."
Hye-jin nodded. "And?"
You stayed quiet because you didn’t know why the idea bothered you. You had spent years being the person people searched for, being hidden behind a cap, known only through movement.
No one had ever searched this persistently, not until now. Hye-jin looked toward the hallway where Hoseok stood then she smiled.
"I think this is a game."
You looked at her. "A game?"
"A cat and mouse game."
You stared toward the room and for the first time... You wondered what would happen if the person chasing you finally caught up.
Now instead of going to Hoshi, you just then decided to send him a text of next week's schedule as your feet proceeded to bring you to the elevator with Hye-jin following behind as you went your merry way to go home.
