being a content creator is not worth it.
at least, in my opinion, it isn’t. thousands, if not millions, of eyes are trained on you 99.99% of the time and all your mistakes are left on public record. how many people will feel entitled to knowing every facet of your life? how can one person ever fathom the amount of unknown faces that hate them simply because none of those people will ever try to…research context, give the benefit of the doubt or engage in critical thinking?
content creators aren’t given the luxury of complete forgiveness. a past mistake, in people’s eyes, define them as a person. and they’ll just have to live with that. as a “normal person” your mistakes will not follow you around. and don’t you dare try to tell me you haven’t done or said anything that could twisted into an “online-cancel-worthy” statement.
we, as an audience, have the right to be critical. but, oh my god, have we forgotten about being kind? i understand the mentality of not having to treat terrible people with respect, but can’t you see it bleeding into twitter threads and tumblr posts addressed to cc’s that don’t deserve that sort of hostility? why would you want to pay forward the aggression you experienced? is being cruel empowering? doesn’t it do more damage than good?
the way people come after cc’s makes me physically sick. as someone who believes in kind and respectful criticism, i’m starting to think there’s no ethical way to hold content creators accountable. because criticism is either ignored or weaponised.
