furb-u-lous

So Furbies are sort of a new obsession for me. I recently found one that my grandmother bought me back in 1998, when they were brand new and all the rage. It was a green eyed Red Wolf. It was one of two gifts she would ever give me, because we had always been so far apart.

I took the Furby out of the box, cleaned up a little bit of corrosion in the battery compartment and voila. She was talking and dancing again. Still my old Mimi, even after moving more than 6 times, one of those 2500 miles.

Right after she was working again, I thought "oh it's sort of lonely for her, wish I had a friend for her!"

It was then that I remembered that my late mother had kept one too. This one was a limited edition from Easter. I searched the entire garage looking in boxes until I found it, then as I took it out, I was so excited I almost cried. It was filthy, but it was HERS. When we put batteries in, though, the speaker didn't work.

Basically, long story short is that I'm apparently a Furby doctor now. My dad and I managed to perform a speaker transplant from a speaker I found online. He talks now. After all the pulling apart and fear I'd mess it up, it turned on and introduced itself in a masculine voice as KaDa. It promptly said "I love you." I wonder if that's a message from my mom, but I'm very excited to be playing and loving them again, both for Mom and for my grandmother who bought me Mimi. I can't bring myself to rename these two anything but what they named themselves.

I introduced them, and they danced and promptly fell asleep.

i’m getting 2 more furblets soon, i preordered 2 random ones (love living in australia and getting furby releases 5 months late 🥲) but somehow my mum managed to find my 2 favourites at kmart a couple weeks before the official release date!!!!! (but then made me wait until easter) anyways hopefully i don’t get any duplicates when my preorder arrives :p

stole my brothers old rusty shelf and now it’s a furby shelf ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

sorry 4 not posting!!!! it’s my birthday in like 5 days so i feel stupid posting my collection knowing it’s going to be in accurate in a few days :3

Reminder that if you really like a piece of media on the internet to consider saving it to the Internet Archive/Wayback Machine.

I just had to learn the hard way when I went to revisit this one story I really liked, only to find the site it was hosted on no longer exists. (Apparently the site experienced a failure last year, and the owners couldn't fix it and decided to just shut it down entirely.)

So that story is just... gone now, because it wasn't posted anywhere else and no one else had logged that story's url to the archive.

Learn from my mistake, save your fav fics/media to the archive- it's literally as simple as plugging in the link and the Wayback Machine saves a snapshot of it. Because one day the site that media is hosted on may disappear and you'll lose it forever.

like. the original 1998 furby could not understand speech. it did not repeat words, the words it had were already programmed into it and just unlocked the longer you played with it. you could say zero words and itd start speaking english or whatever language it was programmed with after a certain point.

but the illusion WORKED on the fucking NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY. the toy designed to make you think it was learning successfully fooled the NSA into thinking it could repeat their secret information

CrayFurbs minimally invasive Furby restoration tutorial (pt 1)

Hello everyone! So I had a couple people ask me about my cleaning methods so I thought I would make a tutorial post! These are just things I’ve learned and the Method I prefer when cleaning or restoring furbys for my personal collection (that being one’s I like to keep mint or near perfect) or rarer furbys (like kid cuisinea, hi-cs) without causing damage to the zip tie or tags.

So in this tutorial I’ll walk you through:

Disabling the zip tie WITHOUT cutting it

Removing and preserving paper tags

General cleaning + what I found works best

Step 1: specimen procurement.

Today I present you with a very stinky lad who has the honor (or misfortune) of being my demonstrate-ie

He’s overall in good cosmetic condition, tags intact but his fur is extremely yellowed and he is generally icky.

Step 2. Removing the ziptie, without cutting it

So to start, locate the zip tie and shift the pelt until the main block part is exposed like so

Then take a sharp tool and push it BETWEEN the locking mechanism and the end of the zip tie, it takes some practice but with a little push….

It pops free! You just preserved the zip tie without cutting it :) and you can re-use it on the furb!

You can then skin as usual. Really your preference on this.

Step 3: removing the “hang tag”

So now you should have a pelt with the tag on, now if you want to still wash the furb + save the tags here’s how I do it!

find the end of the hang tag, it should look like a little “T” you can use a needle or similar tool to part the fur and find the the hole where it went through, gently angle the T piece and feed it through

Flip the furb inside out, and repeat previous step.

You should then have a plastic tag that hasn’t been cut, and with no damage to the paper tag.

Now. Take that beautifully skinned pelt and put it in some water to soak…. While part 2 is being written.

fun fact! a furby tv show was being produced in the 2000s, it never aired and is now lost!

in 2005 hasbro released the emototronic furbys (aka 2005 furbys) as a improved sequel of the original 1998 furbys. part of the marketing for the 2005 furbys was the movie furby island. a short low budget poorly animated cgi movie that aired on nickelodeon about a young girl discovering an island of furbys and protecting them from the movies villain.

it was just your average shitty cheap 2000s movie with a generic ass plot however the movie did surprisingly well so a 13 episode nickelodeon series based off the movie began production. the show was made by frederator studios and used the original movie as a pilot

we don’t know how far into production this show got but due to a mix of declining furby sales and nickelodeon’s new president not approving of the shows pitch, the show got heavily pushed back and eventually canceled. the cancelation was officially announced by an employee on reddit

this show was destined to fail. even if it was released not many kids cared about the 2005 furby enough to watch it. however i think it’s a really interesting case of lost media and i hope someday more information about this series will be released to the public!!
