take a chance on me [shreya&xanthe]
“Your Aai?”Xanthe asked, “Who is that?” Xanthe felt warm with embarrassment at not recognizing the word. She first thought of an older looking Shreya that would be her mother, then a much older version she imagined was Shreya’s grandmother. Then Xanthe’s nose scrunched as she tried to imagine Shreya as an older man- her father. Her imagination wasn’t very vivid that evening but she still imagined all kinds of relatives that could possibly fill the word ‘Aai’.
“There’s this one my dad would play on disk during bad storms.” Xanthe smiled at the memory, “Dun da dun da dun da… I’m not really good!” Xanthe giggled at herself. “It’s a song about a river? I can’t remember the name, it’s definitely a piano song. It picks up in the middle like… bah buh dum bah dum bah dun.bum bum bum bah bum bah. Oh! Yes! River Flows With You? Or by you? I don’t know.”
Xanthe was struggling; she scratched the back of her neck before biting into a cauldron cake. “Shreya…?” Xanthe started, she could feel the question on her tongue but swallowed hard and imagined ruining her new-found friendship due to a phrase with a double meaning. Is this a date? It would be a quick question and then that would be the end of her wondering. She wasn’t sure if she could bring herself to ask though…
“Mother. Aai means mother. I call her that a lot. Growing up, she would never let me call her mom or mum, you see. Didn’t want us to forget where we came from, or where my roots really are. And honestly, I wouldn’t want to forget.” Shreya had that wistful smile on her face; talking about India, about her culture made her so proud and oh so happy.
Cracking her knuckles, she nodded and tested the keys. She had heard it before, and sure enough, she recreated part of the melody. It wasn’t too hard to work with the forte, but she kind of wished for her keyboard at the moment. It was a beautiful song, she realised. And Xanthe was just starting to become a more beautiful person to her. She really wasn’t sure where this was going to lead now.
Halting suddenly at the sound of Xanthe’s voice, the girl’s eyes were full of questions. She said her name, and Shreya froze. What was happening?
take a chance on me [shreya&xanthe]
Xanthe didn’t know if Shreya was mirroring her hair style when she swept it into a bun, but decided that she certainly pulled off the look better than she did. “Thanks. It’s no problem, I had plenty of help!” Xanthe kept an eye on Shreya as she took a deep breath and waited somewhat anxiously and twirled on a piece of her hair in the back that she’d left down and curled. “Thanks!”
Xanthe giggled as Shreya tore into the box and grabbed one. No, certainly this wasn’t a date. Xanthe was over dressed, over anxious, and just over reariong in general. She took a deep breath and relaxed a bit. “I never really watched a bunch of television growing up. My dad didn’t really like technology. You know, ‘Let me speak with a representative!’ and ‘The internet can be an evil place, Xanthe!’”
Xanthe’s eyes looked over the strings, drums, and piano. Her breath almost caught in her throat. “Well, father always said mom played the piano… So would you play something on it for me?” Xanthe walked over to the piano and let her fingers roam over the keys without pushing down. She never learned and probably never would.
Shreya frowned, as she wolfed down the cake. “Totally understandable. My aai didn’t give me a phone until I was fourteen. She didn’t trust me with one until then.” She shrugged, throwing down the wrapper.
When Xanthe looked at the piano, Shreya’s back straightened. Pianos, huh? They weren’t that special, and Shreya wasn’t that good at it either. She was more a keyboard person herself, but hey. She’d do it for Xanthe.
Getting up to the forte, the girl looked at it once. Blessed with the talent of playing by the ear, she smirked at Xanthe. “What would you like to hear? And you’ll have to hum it, because I’m not too good at sheet music when it comes to pianos. Just a warning.” She sat down on the stool, positioning her fingers on the right keys.

pairs of us [ shreya&kizzie ]
Kizzie nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard someone calling her name. Anyone else wanting her attention she would have been fine but the fact that it was the voice she was dreading made her muscles tense and her breath catch in her throat. It wasn’t that she was avoiding Shreya, she just hadn’t been going out of her way to speak with the girl. She was aware of it but then she still couldn’t stop herself because, frankly, she hated that their friendship had a black cloud stuck over it. That they were tethered together in an eternal unfortunate circumstance because they happened to be the ones to find Rose.
Everyone else seemed to be able to move on in some degree and every time she thought she was getting better it would all come rushing back. Going to Snyder for therapy of sorts helped but she couldn’t keep Snyder in her pocket with her and carry her around whenever her anxiety sky-rocketed. Putting on a brave face was becoming harder as the days went on. She, in turn, kept her focus on the summer vacation coming up soon where she could maybe, finally, escape the tight hold Hogwarts had on her lately. But maybe it was easier than that, easier than trudging on. Maybe all she had to do was talk to Shreya, like Snyder had suggested months ago. Maybe…
Letting out a breath, Kizzie turned on her heel and stopped in the door way of the music room. She frowned. She’d been neglecting Chelsea and her music clubs in general. Her art, in comparison, had never been better with all the time she dedicated to it recently; to be able to paint the words she had trouble expressing was a blessing in disguise. Her mark had never been higher.
“Hey Shreya,” she greeted after a moments pause. “What’s up?” Yeah, that was a safe greeting. Going with the generic How are you? probably was a bad idea. She bet Shreya heard it enough anyway. “Planning on serenading some lucky bloke?”
“If I get lucky, it’ll be Marcus. But hey now, music attracts everyone. I’ll play for donations too.” Shreya grinned, strumming the guitar playfully. She looked at Kizzie, observed her heavy eyes, and her posture. And the Slytherin didn’t need to know why it was like that. While she tried to push it down, and or fill it up with useless banter, the hole in her heart didn’t really go away. Even when Tessa ‘needed’ meditation help or with Paige’s sudden book suggestions, Shreya really couldn’t move on.
But if anything, she was good at faking it. She was great at it, and maybe she just had to do that. Fake it till she made it. Or broke in the process; whatever got her through whatever. Looking at Kizzie broke Shreya’s heart, and all over again, she was back in the tiny space with the scent of copper in the air.
The girl screamed. But it was silent, in her head. A forbidden sound, shrieking in the corners till it only echoed in a din. Shreya clenched the guitar like a lifeline, and pulled back another goofy grin. That way, Kizzie would never see how shaky her smile was.
She dropped Snyder and avoided her minions in the Great Hall. No one could tell her whether she needed therapy or not, because she was fine. Surely faking it, but she was fine.
“How are you doing? I saw you and your Pygmy Puff at lunch the other day. You never told me you and Garrod were parents. Wait, that sounded weird, my bad.”
He scoffed at the joke, rolling his eyes. “Leave comedy to the professionals, darling. You aren’t doing it any justice.” His lips curved into a thin smile upon the last of his opponent’s pieces shattering across the board, a signal of victory for him. “If it is best for you, it is for the best. In my so humble opinion.”
Shreya nodded, sighing softly as she grew serious. Sometimes, she just worried so much about things. Maybe it was to fill that subtle hole in her heart, or maybe she just needed to fill the void of uselessness. “...It looks like an interesting game. I was wondering if...you could teach me?”
“Look at you, all jet set on a broomstick. Really though, are you like attached to that thing or what?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. It is fun!”
Liam titled his head perplexed, wondering if you had to use to potion to turn into something with three legs. But what on Earth had three legs? “I’m guessing we’re partners then, great! We can kick butt together!”
“Oh yeah we are. Okay, so we go like this; coordinated steps. Basically we’re three legs, so we support each other. We’ll work them like normal legs. These...” Shreya patted her tied knee, “...go first. And then our legs. Or those it make us slow?”
don’t you forget about me
Rowan’s nose wrinkled in distaste. “I have seen a bit of Mean Girls. Doesn’t really seem like my kind of movie.” Really, she didn’t have a particular movie ‘type’, but the appeal of the cattiness in the movie everyone else seemed to adore was lost entirely on her. “Might not like Heathers, either.”
“I mean, I do respect Gretchen a lot. Like it takes something to make ‘fetch’ happen, you know? But I can see both sides.” Shreya pursed her lips, nodding slowly. “Yeah, maybe not Heathers. But I’m all about the chick-literature. Have you watched The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants? I loved it. We should watch it again.”
take a chance on me [shreya&xanthe]
“I didn’t mean to startle you.” Xanthe said with a quick smirk lifting in the corner of her mouth then darting away. Shreya looked funny just then, darting up and readying to throw a drum stick at her. Xanthe giggled at her reaction and just walked farther into the music room, her loose bun bobbing as she walked.
Xanthe didn’t mean to be too dressy, but thought a relatively nice outfit would do her justice if it turned out this really was a date. She didn’t think Shreya looked ratty, not at all, Xanthe thought Shreya looked comfortable. Xanthe always liked comfortable pajamas, they helped her fall asleep faster.
“Of course I came.” Xanthe said, “I’m ready to hear your musical genius. I also made those cauldron cakes that you wanted. They’re a bit sweet.”
Shreya beamed wide, quickly pulling her hair into a bun and pushing the sticks through it to keep it in place before running for the basket. “You’re adorable, thank you so much!” Taking it from her hand, the scent wafted through the air, and the girl took a deep breath. “My God...these smell so good.”
Quickly to pick one and tear it apart, she was midway through her snack when it hit her; she never formally showed Xanthe around the place. Swallowing, her ears turned red. “Right...Hello MTV and welcome to my crib.” She smirked a little, covering up her social mishap with a joke.
“But really. This is all you see and all you get. I have my strings on the side, and the drums to the back. There’s also probably a trombone, if someone hasn’t taken it to practise already. And in the right corner is the piano forte. What would you like to hear next?” She resumed her chewing, the cake really something as Shreya waited on Xanthe’s answer.
“I mean I think you’re better looking than Ed Sheeran.”he quipped back as he nodded along with the girl. “Socks are typically below you unless your legs are in the air.”he teased with an eye wink. “Amazing, let’s do it.”
“Headstands are a way to go. But only for so long till your hands need socks, and then it’s just way too much work.” Shreya blushed a little at the compliment, her cheeks turning red (thank goodness for the tan!). “We could do it today. I may or may not...have heard of a passage that could take us to Hogsmeade. Hypothetically of course.” A thief’s secrets were always well-kept; Stevie might have been her best friend, but she was only keeping her own tracks covered.
Love & Open
“Good to keep you on your toes, I guess.” Love nodded. “Perhaps more of us prefects should surprise others more.” She brushed the dirt of her knees, and straightened up. “Well, not to be rude or anything, but this will most likely be our last exchange for a while, less you seek me out. I don’t actively search for others for companionship, it just kind of happens. If you are really interested in seeing my drawings, catch me in the library some times. Anyways, I need to finish up this extra credit, nice meeting you.” Love offered her hand in a handshake.
“Fair enough, I’ll see you when I see you then.” Tidying up her hands from the soil that seemed to be trapped between her nails and fingers, Shreya frowned a little. “I’m gonna have to wash up before homework anyway. It was nice seeing you too, Garnett.”
FIN
Already with the rope tied around his leg, all Liam needed was a partner for the race. “Now I’m wondering if this game was thought up by wizards or by Muggles. I think a spell to make the race actually three-legged would be too messy, yah?”
“You could morph one? I mean, there must be a potion for that. Maybe a modification to the Polyjuice Potion even?” Shreya was suggesting as she tightened the rope around her own leg. “I think we’re pretty secure to win.”
“You must be exhausted constantly from worrying about such minimal things, darling. My suggestion is to let the scene play out without interference. If the cat wants to come back, it will do so on it’s own.” Randall went back to playing wizard chess against the board, his knight knocking another into several pieces. “But knowing you, you’ll likely throw my well-intentioned advice to the dogs.”
“You mean to the cats, right? We were talking about cats...? Get it? Throw your advice to the---never mind.” It was a good opportunity for a joke, but ill-timed nonetheless. Shrugging, she sat down to watch the chess pieces, just in time to see the pawn fall. “I suppose it’s for the best.”
“It’s fine, it was a prank and I didn’t think anything less for field day.”
“By God Stevie, you’re the only person I know who bruises so easily. Like a tomato. Let’s get some ice on that, come now.”
“That does not sound good. Are you alright there?” Isaac leaned forward, hoping that it wasn’t going to be a prank.
“Yep, all fine and dandy. I was just relaxing a little. Did I fall too loudly? I’m bloody exhausted after the Wronski Feint.”
