Fiona Rae

 Fiona Rae is a British artist who is known for having a portfolio filled with energy and complexity. Her work mainly focusing on expanding on modern painting.The paintings feature mostly brush strokes and a wide range of medias such as oil paints, waxes and vanishes. On the TATE website one of her paintings (Night Vison 1998) is described as ‘A push abstraction in the edge of figuratation’. I really enjoyed browsing her portfolio as it shows how the meaning is undermined by materiality of the painting. Her work is mainly made up from geometric shapes and dribbles. This is something I hope to include in my work as i progress on.

Marc Quinn

Marc Quinn is a British born contemporary artist who I will researching for my Independent Enquiry Module. According to his personal website, where his art series and artworks are featured, Quinn makes art about what it is to be a person living in the world as well as often connecting with art history. One of his most famous pieces is one he created at the start of 1991 and it is called ‘The making of self’. Some consider this piece strange as he uses his own blood which has been refrigerated to cover the mould. ‘This series of sculptures presents a cumulative index of passing time and on-going portrait of the artists ageing and changing self’. This quotation comes from his website of him describing the process behind this piece.

Some of the work I found especially interesting was his series thats named ‘The Toxic Sublime’. He uses canvas paper that has been sanded down and bent then sprayed with paint. Although the painting may not look like anything the artist explains how the detrusits from London are painted onto the canvas to bond together the landscape and artwork together.

here are some examples i’ve created using pillows,clothing and just objects around the house.

I made one minute sculptures last semester and really enjoyed it! Especially doing it quickly and finding things that could resemble a figure of a person. An artist to look at for this is Erwin Wurums!

Here is more development of my flower work. I wanted to try different colours but didn’t know where to begin with the picking the colour. So I decided to use LED lights which are attached around my room and put them on while painting and also cover the names of the paints. This was quite difficult to do as it was dark and quite difficult to see if I had missed any parts of the paper flower. In conclusion it turned out quite well and using LED lights is definitely something I want to explore further especially with expanding my colour palette behind pinks and reds.

Continuing on from my previous post I decided to develop the flowers further by using scraps of cardboard to create the structure of the flower. I then went ahead and glue them all together and started painting using the same colour palette Id usually use. This was a fun task to do as the idea came up right on the spot once i’d completed work for a different module and began thinking if and how I could use the tiny cardboard pieces to create something else.

Carrying on from my previous post I decided to develop the price further. Instead of cutting out floral patterns I wanted to paint them out. I didn’t want an exact replica of the design of the duvet cover but i wanted to interpret it without copying from it directly.Using acrylic I softly brushed on the paper and then pressed down hard on the paper to create more detailed paint strokes.

These are some pieces I did in response to the presence and absence brief. Regarding some personal issues I decided to move back home and the suitcase represents my presence in an environment I have altered. For the response I drew the suitcase out and used a range of 2H pencils and HB pencils to shade in to try and fit the creases and shape into the artwork. I had an idea to leave it like that but I wanted to expand further. I decided to make it a multi media piece by using marker to represent the pink blanket in the photo and floral designs from a magazine to represent the duvet cover.
