“As much as I'd love to stand here and stare at one another --” No, he wouldn't. “It be far more productive if you'd spit out whatever ingenious line you're dying to deliver.”
"Perhaps you should stop intentionally drawing attention to yourself then, hmm? Some are not nearly as merciful as others, you might want to keep that in mind. You are, after all, half mortal."
"I don't draw attention to myself -- Seriously no matter how deeply I try to keep under the radar one of you always manages to sniff me out."
Hypnos offered nothing, shrugging again a bit. “I have no answers for you about the doors and if I had them, I doubt you would take them from me. Contrary to popular belief-” He cast a look skyward, one that was not necessarily fond, “We are not perfect either. Thanatos tends to care more about his work than anything else, though, which means that if the doors broke it’s because he was working harder than even is normal for him - maybe a result of lots of people dying, some kind of scuffle, perhaps even a war.” He shook his head again. “You didn’t find help in the light, so you went to the depths of the dark before you even looked in the shadows.”
"Great -- So you're one big, nasty, dysfunctional family and somehow that makes it okay to be delinquent parents who throw your children into the meat grinder without a care. I don't feel bad for him ; I don't feel bad for any of you. There are how many gods of death? He's not the only one -- Send someone else after the doors." Luke leveled him with an ice cold gaze, blue hues ringed with gold. "And what would you have done to help me, Hypnos? Threatened to put gods to sleep for not claiming their children?"
"That may be so, little one, but I have family in those same low places." She paused a few feet away from him, wings fluttering in the breeze as she stared his down. "I wouldn’t be too terribly certain over that seeing as he is my uncle. But, I will make a little deal with you, child. Stay away from my siblings and we won’t test who Tartarus will side with in the end. Because between you and my mother, he’s more likely to side with her."
"I have no interest in dealing with your siblings. I can keep that deal. Can you see that they stay away from me? I tend to attract gods, it's not really something I can help."
Hypnos sighed, shaking his head and pinching his brow. “It’s not entirely that simple. It’s never that simple. Doors don’t just close just like skies don’t just stay up and people don’t just die or go to sleep and titans don’t just waltz back into action. There is a way for everything and even if it’s not fair, it’s how it has to get done.” He shook his head again, looking worn, tired in a way that had to do with more than just sleep. “You never asked for the right allies, and I don’t blame you. You can only ask so many times. But I’m still not going to be your enemy.”
"You think I haven't done my research? I know how they close. I know the sacrifices that have to be made. It falls on the shoulders of demigods once again to fix what the gods should never have let get broken -- How many of us have to die before you all start to give a fuck?" It wasn't fair to treat Hypnos this way, he'd never been part of the problem. Then again he'd never really been part of the solution. "I got the only ally I could find."
"Poor child, though most of the times Gods cannot see their
mortal woman—or even the god-mortal child.. You should not blame him, dear; the Olympians have laws as you mortals do.” She reached her right arm out, palm resting upon his cheek.
Maybe Athena wasn't so bad, but that didn't make up for what Hermes had put him through -- For what all of the Unclaimed kids at camp went through. The ones who had lost their mortal parents, they had lost everything. "It's Zeus who made the rule, is it not? I can blame him. I do. I always will."
"I find that terribly hard to believe." She smirked at that, tapping a black talon against her chin as more of her illusion faded. "I am one of the Keres, child. I can make sure you never come back."
"Believe what you want, but I have friends in low places." Luke steeled his nerves, not letting her see any intimidation even if he felt it. Gods were bullies ; they always had been. They used demigods and then ignored them when they were through. "You have no sway over Tartarus himself, and it's by his will I'm here."
She strode towards him, large, dark wings snapping into view as her illusions began to slip in her rage. “You must be one of Hermes’s little bastards,” she sneered, closing the distance quickly. “You’re lucky you made it out of there alive. There are scarier beings there than Hades and even Zeus fears my mother.”
"I met your mother in Tartarus. She was actually much easier to talk to." Luke said, leaving it unclear whether or not it was truthful. "And your scare tactics aren't going to work on me. You can kill me if you want, I'll just come back somewhere else."
"As though there would be no purpose to it. Some of them may have time to waste toying with the children, but we don’t. You can hate me, and I know you do, extensively, but I’m not your enemy. If only because I don’t want to be and you can’t force me."
"Don't you think the Doors of Death would be his responsibility being as he's the god of Death and all? How is it fair that it falls on demigods yet again?" He sighed some, reaching up to rub at one of his temples. "All of you are my enemy, because none of you have ever been my ally."
Her hand snaked out, fingers wrapping around his neck. “Thanny is much kinder than I and if you value your life, boy, you will watch your tongue and never lay a finger on my brother again. Because, and here’s the dirty little secret,” she growled, face inches from his own, “I don’t mind torching people until they beg for me to sever their life.”
The moment she finished speaking there was a soft flash as he disappeared from her grip, reappearing about a yard away from her. It didn't always work, but he was grateful that it did this time. "Oh, I'm sorry. Did I offend you? It wasn't me that chained him up, by the way. It was someone else. I was too busy fighting my way out of Tartarus while that was going on."
"There doesn’t have to be one in the same lifetime as those who fought in the last. I buried enough children in this generation for them and I don’t have the energy to fight again so soon."
"I’ll take naive over heartless, thanks."
"You should ask your brother about the Doors of Death, then." Luke said, shaking his head. "Why he's decided it's up to a couple of demigods to shut them."
"Aren’t you just adorable, thinking anything that involves those on Olympus has any affect on me. Sweetie, I’m the daughter of a primordial and actually older than thunder ass. Go ahead and tear that mountain of miscreants down. That doesn’t change the fact that your kind eventually all fall to my sisters and me."
"The point remains ; we're not useless. We're threats when we want to be. It only took two of us to destroy Kronos and demigods have managed to chain up your god of Death before. You're not superior for underestimating us, you''re foolish."
Athena rose her right hand, brushing her thumb against her chin;
"That is a question I cannot answer, child; but I do have a question you can answer, why do you hate your father?”
“Because he left my mother and I to fend for ourselves after she was permanently broken from trying to become Apollo's oracle. He never came by. He never checked on us. He left her, even though he claimed he loved her and he didn't bother to acknowledge his mistakes until I was a threat.”
"They only do that to the weak, half human bastards that have no chance of amounting to anything other than dead. Usually in a bloody, messy manner."
"And yet here I stand, the demigod that nearly tore Olympus asunder. You'd think your lot would have learned to stop underestimating us by now."
"I’m not worried about demigods or mortals," Hypnos said, immediately, shaking his head. "Mortals are rarely a threat and demigods are only a threat when we-" His words snapped off, taking a moment to compose himself. "I don’t want another war, Luke. I’m tired from the last one still."
"There will always be another war. For a god, you're awfully naive."
A soft laughter exhaled from her before
narrowing her eyes at the mention of a daughter, "What do you wish to know, Luke?"
“I need to know who my friends are -- It's a little confusing for me, not that you care about my feelings or how my life's been lately. Still. Can I get some insight?"
