Lucas raised his eyebrow at her words, his head tilting to the side. “Did you just give me a compliment?” He smirked at her, pretending to act shocked. When she brought up Riley he furrowed his eyebrows. He hadn’t even thought of Riley the entire night while he was with Maya, so why did Maya bring her up?  “Riley thinks I’m some sort of hero. But I don’t think she’d ever accept that my entire family isn’t chocked full of super brave Gryffindor types. She may actually break inside if she finds out that my uncle was what he was.” He laughed awkwardly to fill the silence. His brain was still trying to understand why she had mentioned Riley - but he didn’t have time to ask. They were about six seconds from being face to face with Eran.  He snorted at her false bravery. Lucas knew that internally Maya was probably freaking out. “Okay whatever you say, but my hand is here if you need it. Ready?”

Maya gives him a look. With a tight grin, she shoots back at him: “Don’t get used to it, Gryffindor.” Or look at me like that, she added mentally. And she was relieved she hadn’t noticed her shiver at his touch.

The Slytherin shrugs at his statement. “I don’t know. How do you know how Riley would react unless you tell her? And to be honest, I’m not quite sure how she would so I can’t help you there.” Maya looks over at him as her nervously chuckles. “You didn’t answer my question, Huckleberry. Why did you tell me all that stuff?” If Maya was to be honest, Riley tended to be peoples’ go-to person for more serious stuff. She had a knack for always saying the right thing back to them. Maya, on the other hand, didn’t posses that particular skill.

“I told you that I can handle it,” she says stubbornly. The girl takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. “Alright. Ready.”

“Oh yeah, Slytherin?” Lucas challenged, his eyes never leaving her. “You aren’t going to start showering me with compliments now? I feel let down....” He sighed dramatically, chuckling slightly. Lucas had never known Maya to offer him a single compliment, but when she did - it made his heart start beating and his chest tighten. 

The way she spoke about Riley confused him. He knew that they were best friends but he couldn’t figure out why she had chose to bring her up. They weren’t with Riley right now, Lucas was with her and showing her things he had never shown anyone before. It was something he never could’ve pictured himself doing with Riley. “I don’t know.. I just felt like I could tell you and trust you. For the same reasons I’m bringing you into the forest. I think a lot of you, Maya.” The air felt thick and he didn’t know how to handle the tension that he felt after he spoke his words. So instead of saying something else that might scare her away, he smirked. “Plus, I can always just let the spiders get ya if I think you’re going to spill my secrets.” Speaking of the spiders, they were about sixty seconds away from being face to face with the biggest of them. Once Maya verbalized that she was ready to move forward he turned the corner to their part of the forrest. In front of them stood a giant web with a twelve foot spider perched on it. Surrounding him were hundreds of smaller spiders. When Lucas stepped towards them they all scattered to get away. “Lucas. You have brought a guest?” Eran’s voice was deep and echoed into the darkness. Lucas turned to look at Maya, making sure she was still alright. He kept his hand outstretched just in case she needed to grab ahold of it.  “Good evening Eran,” Lucas spoke towards the spider in a gentle tone, “This is Maya. I hope you don’t mind me bringing her here.” “Is she your mate?” Eran questioned. Lucas’ face turned red and he felt the urge to laugh but buried it so that the spider didn’t feel disrespected. Lucas shook his head, “She’s not. She’s a friend.” “Does the female speak?”

“Yeah. I realized that once I said it…” he frowned slightly. A part of him hoped that she wouldn’t hold that against him in the long run. The other part of him knew she wouldn’t. 

Lucas noted the color of her cheeks in the moonlight when he let go of her. He offered her a smile, his eyes falling on her lips for a brief second before he turned to look into the darkness. “I don’t touch them. They do eat human flesh… But Eran is relatively polite…. Once you get over the thought that he could eat you in less than ten minutes.” A nervous laugh escaped his lips as they walked further into the forest.  He had forgotten that people didn’t know about his Uncle, or his family in general. Lucas never liked to let people know that his Uncle had served for Voldemort. He also liked to keep it a secret that his entire family was Slytherin. But now the cat was out of the bag, so what did he have to lose by telling her more? “Yeah. He apparently was pretty high up.. He told me a lot of crazy stuff about his time as a Death Eater. You wanna know a secret?” He eyed her for a second before continuing, “I’m the only Gryffindor in my entire bloodline. I thought my mom was going to lose it when I wasn’t sorted into Slytherin. Luckily for me I hang with one.”He winked at her, nudging her a little bit with his arm.  When she asked if they were almost there he nodded, stopping his movement. “Yeah. When we round this corner you’ll see some pretty scary stuff. You sure you want to keep moving? I can offer you my hand if it’s too scary.” He winked at her and held his hand out, waiting for her response.

“It’s fine, I knew what you meant,” she replied easily with a shrug of her shoulders. 

Maya couldn’t help but give him a smile back; the look he gave her caused a slight shiver to run down her spine, though she wasn’t sure why. She hoped Lucas didn’t notice, though. Or if he did, that he thought she was just cold or something. “Well, that’s good news,” the blonde states sarcastically with a chuckle.

The Slytherin was touched (and a bit confused) when Lucas shared such personal information about his family with her. “Lucas, you don’t have to tell me…” she murmurs softly. She didn’t want him to feel obligated. Her eyes then widened and jaw nearly dropped at his secret reveal. “The only one? Wow, that’s insane. To be honest, though, I’m not surprised that you were sorted into Gryffindor, despite your family’s history.” She shrugs and finishes, rather casually: “You’re a good guy.” A smile appears again when he nudges her. “Why are you telling me all this, Huckleberry? Isn’t this more of a…Riley conversation?” Her head drops to the ground as she focuses instead of where she’s walking instead of meeting his gaze. 

“I think I can handle it, Ranger Rick,” Maya replies, eyeing his hand with a roll of her eyes. Maya continued walking and mentally tried to prepare herself for what was to come. No way was she goning to give Lucas the satisfaction of seeing her frightened (at least outwardly).

“I always just kind of hoped maybe a tiny infant me had witnessed death and I didn’t know.” he laughed at how stupid that sounded. But he felt like Thestral sightings were like an exclusive club that he wasn’t invited to.  Lucas shrugged as he thought about breaking in to Hagrid’s house. “I just want to see if he has a dragon. It isn’t like I’m actually going to do it. I’d have to get my hands on an invisibility cloak for that and… that’s basically impossible.” He sighed, running his hand through his hair. It would’ve been fun, he thought, to break into Hagrid’s hut. Not only because of the possibility of a baby dragon hanging around but all of the other crazy things Hagrid probably had hoarded inside.  He made a mental note to ask his brother how to get an invisibility cloak. As she grabbed his hand and almost fell into him he caught her, his hands holding on to her shoulders. It took him a second before he let go of her, stepping back a few inches. Lucas cleared his throat before speaking, “Yeah Eran is pretty terrifying. I thought for sure he’d eat me the first time I met him. But you’ve just got to know how to handle spiders.” He winked at her before finishing his thought, “but yeah… My uncle used to try to scare me at zoos by hissing at the snakes.. He has a dark mark and would always tell me that he was Voldemort’s go to guy. I used to be terrified of him. Now I just think he’s full of it.”

“That’s kinda horrible of you to say,” she admits with a shake of her head. “But…I know what you mean. It’d be amazing to see what they look like instead of just pictures of them.”

“Yeah, I agree with ya there,” Maya replies with a soft chuckle. Geez, so Thestrals were invisible to her, yet she didn’t have an Invisibility Cloak. What a rip off.  

The Slytherin flushes slightly when Lucas catches her, half from embarrassment at falling and half from his touch. She murmurs a quick “thanks” before straightening herself out. She couldn’t help but notice his lingering hold on herself before he stepped back, clearing his throat. Maya runs a hand through her blond hair during the momentary silence. “And how do you handle spiders?” she questions him. “Your uncle has a Dark Mark?” Her eyebrows fly upwards as she takes in this information. Who would’ve thought Lucas the Moral Compass would have a family member with relations to Voldemort? “Yeah, he probably is just full of shit. Or himself. So, basically the same thing.” A small smirk toys at her lips as they continue walking forward. “Are we almost there?”

Lucas was thankful that it was dark out because he was pretty sure that his face had turned red. He didn’t even realize that he was staring that hard. It was just something that he did. When he was in a room with her it was impossible not to stare. “What?” He grinned, “I wasn’t looking at you. I was looking…..at the trees. Nature is so cool. Even at night.”  He laughed as he ran a hand through his hair.

“I’ve heard of it.. But I’ve never seen one. I wonder if that means it’s invisible or if I just haven’t ever seen it before… How about you?” He stood there for a second trying to decide if he was lame or not for possibly not being able to see a Thestral. He shook that thought out of his brain with the incoming thought of Hagrid taking care of tiny baby dragons. “That would be so crazy. I kinda wanna break in and see but …. at the same time… I don’t.” He let out an awkward laugh as he hopped over a log.He offered his hand out to her for help to get over the giant log in front of him.  “Only the Alpha can speak. His name is Eran, son of Aragog. He’s giant, just so you know. When I first heard him talking I thought I was going crazy. My uncle used to tell me that he could speak Parseltongue, But I don’t think I believe him. That would be insane.”

“Right…” she mutters rather sarcastically, chuckling along with him.  “Yeah, I read up on them one time. I can’t see them, either, but it’s pretty interesting that only people who have witnessed death can see them, isn’t it?” As they walk onward, Maya stares ahead thoughtfully for a moment, silent. Her face then breaks into a smile at the thought of Hagrid caring for a dragon swaddled in a blanket. “Me too.” And then she realizes: “Hold up. Did Lucas the Good just express a desire to break into someone’s home? Wow. My bad influence hasn’t only affected Riley; it’s affected you, as well.” She smiles smugly. “I’m quite proud of that.”

She glares at his hand, debating swatting it away, but once she gets up on the log, Maya finds herself quite unstable. So, reluctantly, she takes Lucas’ hand (after nearly falling over onto him, that was) and steps down. “Eran the Acromantula,” the blonde repeats. “Parseltongue? Yeah, hate to break it to ya, but I think your uncle might be fibbing a bit. He’d be, like, one in a million if he spoke it.”

He watched her carefully as she took everything in. The moon made her glow in a way that he had never seen before and Lucas made a mental note to remember what she looked like forever. He had honestly never seen anyone that beautiful before.

Lucas laughed at how overdramatic the tiny blonde was being. He didn’t think he would ever get used to it. When she mentioned Hagrid adopting a dragon he smirked, thinking about a story that his brother told him when he was younger. “Yeah. Ride on one! It would be so cool to fly through the air….” he paused, remembering that they literally flew on broomsticks, “on something other than a broomstick that is….. Speaking of Hagrid. My brother told me that our dad said Hagrid really DID basically adopt a dragon back when my parents were here. It’s probably not true because my brother is a liar… But what if Hagrid had a dragon in his hut right now.”  That would’ve been cool. Lucas contemplated asking Maya to go investigate with him but he was pretty positive she would say yes and then he wouldn’t be able to back out at the last minute. 

“Wanna go talk to the spiders??”

“Quit looking at me like that, Huckleberry,” she taunts him without even shifting an eye in his direction. She bends down to inspect a strange purple plant before standing up and returning to their conversation.

Rolling her eyes playfully at his Hagrid-eque comments, Maya turns her head to meet the Gryffindor’s gaze. “Have you ever heard of a Thestral?” she asks, actually curious to his answer and wondering if he could see them or if, like most people, they were invisible. Maya’s lips turn upwards into a smile at the thought of Hagrid inside his hut, rocking a baby dragon to sleep in a giant-size rocking chair with a fire extinguisher by its side. “Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.”

“You’re not actually serious, are you?” she questions him, one brow raised. “We can’t actually talk to them, right? Like, it’s not like they can speak English fluently.” A weak chuckle follows her feeble attempt at a joke.

Lucas rolled his eyes at how dramatic she was being. He thought it was cute that she was trying to genuinely act unafraid. Any time he mentioned the forest most people would call him crazy and change the subject. He had half expected Maya to do the same,and was actually pretty surprised that she had agreed to go into the forest with him.  “Nah they’re not big on human meat. Don’t worry.” He shrugged, the words coming out nonchalantly as if it were completely normal to mention things like that. “I’m hoping we get to see one. They’re pretty deep into the forest and I’ve only seen them a few times. But they’re so cool. I’ve always wanted to ride one,” he sighed as he ran a hand through his hair, “but that’s a pipe dream.” He looked at her again, trying his best not to get caught staring. “You still good? We’re about to round the corner to the spider’s colony.”

Maya walked alongside the boy silently for a while. She took the opportunity to look around at their surroundings; as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she was able to pick out specific plants she’d recognized from Herbology, and interesting flowers. She loved the way the moonlight bounced off the trees. It would be a great scene to paint.

“They’re – They’re not big on human meat?” she repeats, her voice going up an octave. “Well, isn’t that fantastic! What a relief! I feel so much better, thank you, Lucas!” In her fury, she hadn’t realized she’d used his real name and not one of her many nicknames, per usual. Taking a deep breath to settle down, she looks over at the Gryffindor as he talks. “Ride one?” Maya rolls her eyes. “Sheesh. You’re almost as crazy about beasts as Hagrid. I swear, that man would adopt a dragon as his own child if he could.”

Lucas figured Maya would be singing a different tune once they got into the forest. It was a terrifying place for someone who had never been in there. It was colder than the school grounds and had this ominous feeling that you felt when you stepped into a cemetery at night. The centaurs, dragons, spiders, ghosts, and other creatures that roamed the night lurked in the background and made your skin feel like it was crawling. But once you got used to it, it didn’t feel bad at all.

“Has anyone ever told you how stubborn you are?” Lucas laughs, putting his hand back into his pocket. He followed her into the forest, jogging a little bit to catch up with her.  “I already told the centaurs I was bringing someone here tonight, so they’re expecting you… Sometimes they can be a little intimidating but they’re not as creepy as the spiders. Personally I like the giants and the dragons. But they’re rare unless you want to go deep into the forest.” Lucas watched her from the side of his eyes trying to read her reaction. “Which we can… if you want. Or we can just chill on the edge.”

Walking fast just to annoy Lucas, Maya calls out behind her, “Yes, as a matter of fact, I’ve been told that a few times.” 

“A little intimidating?” Maya snickers at his word choice. “You mean that they’d probably eat me for a nice midnight snack if you hadn’t told them I was coming.” She continues walking before slowing her pace to walk in pace with the Gryffindor. “We can do whatever you want, Huckleberry. I’ve never met a dragon before; it sure would be interesting. I’d like to see my mom’s face when I send her an owl telling her when I do.”

Lucas let out a laugh when he saw her. Tiny, blonde, and scowling. It was exactly what he imagined she’d look like once he mentioned going into the forest. “It’s going to be fine, Shortstack. I promise to protect you.” He grinned and stood up from his spot. Lucas couldn’t understand why everyone was so afraid of the forest. The creatures were nice if you showed them respect.  “Promise me you won’t whip your wand out? Because I’ve never brought anyone in here and I don’t want the first person I bring in to start a forest war.” He put his own wand in his back pocket and offered Maya a warm smile. He wanted to make fun of her for being so obviously scared, but he figured if he did that then she’d probably head back to the castle. Which is exactly what he didn’t want.  “You wanna hold onto me when we walk in or do you think you can put on a brave face and suffer through it?” He offered her his hand, sort of hoping she’d take it but half expecting her to scoff at the offer.

“Hold onto you, Huckleberry?” she scoffs at him. And then, she teases him: “I think you’d enjoy that more than I’d need it. I’m fine. Relax.” And on that note, she gives him a raised-eyebrow and tilt of her head before setting off for the Forest, knowing he’ll follow in her wake.

He followed her into the forest, jogging a little bit to catch up with her.  “I already told the centaurs I was bringing someone here tonight, so they’re expecting you... Sometimes they can be a little intimidating but they’re not as creepy as the spiders. Personally I like the giants and the dragons. But they’re rare unless you want to go deep into the forest.” Lucas watched her from the side of his eyes trying to read her reaction. “Which we can... if you want. Or we can just chill on the edge.”

nighttime adventure | lucaya

At precisely 11:01 PM, Maya sneaks out of the Slytherin Common Room and heads down to the grounds. “Alright, the Forbidden Forest. It could’ve been anything, anything, and he chose the place that hosts beasts and werewolves and who knows what else,” she mumbles bitterly to herself while walking through the halls. She double checks that her wand is still in the back pocket of her jeans, which it was. And she continues walking.

“If I get killed while we’re on this little nighttime adventure,” she huffs throwing her hands up for emphasis while walking towards Lucas, who’s sitting on the steps of Hagrid’s Hut, “I swear, I will come back as a ghost just to haunt you, Ranger Rick.”

Lucas let out a laugh when he saw her. Tiny, blonde, and scowling. It was exactly what he imagined she’d look like once he mentioned going into the forest. “It’s going to be fine, Shortstack. I promise to protect you.” He grinned and stood up from his spot. Lucas couldn’t understand why everyone was so afraid of the forest. The creatures were nice if you showed them respect.  “Promise me you won’t whip your wand out? Because I’ve never brought anyone in here and I don’t want the first person I bring in to start a forest war.” He put his own wand in his back pocket and offered Maya a warm smile. He wanted to make fun of her for being so obviously scared, but he figured if he did that then she’d probably head back to the castle. Which is exactly what he didn’t want.  “You wanna hold onto me when we walk in or do you think you can put on a brave face and suffer through it?” He offered her his hand, sort of hoping she’d take it but half expecting her to scoff at the offer.

Forbidden Forest || Lucas/Maya

Lucas was already out by Hagrid’s hut when he sent Maya the last text. He couldn’t believe how corny he was, but he hoped maybe she would forget it. Lucas laughed to himself as he remembered who exactly he was talking about. Maya would probably never let him live that cheesy hand holding remark down for the rest of his life. 

He shoved his phone in his pocket and sat down in the grass to wait for her to get there. It was exciting thinking about taking someone into the forbidden forest. He had always ventured off alone in there, so the idea of taking someone with him this time was super exciting. Especially when that person was Maya. He just hoped she wouldn’t freak out and start casting spells on all of the creatures.
