Kiprop killed the field at Hayward for the 4th time.
Although nearly two years ago, I remember this moment like it was yesterday. I still have the video on my phone that I created this gif from. As someone who's only left Iowa's borders a handful of times, being at Hayward and witnessing this was truly a dream come true. When they toed the line, my focus was on Kiprop-- the reigning world champion and the field favorite. Among labored strides, his looked so effortless. A living, breathing testament to what the human body is capable of.Ā
On May 2, 2018 all of this changed. This picturesque memory became tainted.Ā
For those reading this that don't know, Asbel Kiprop has reportedly tested positive for the banned substance EPO. Here's a link from The Guardian.Ā Since this has been brought to public attention, Kiprop's released a personal statement regarding the happenings via his lawyer. His statement alleges extortion and wrongdoing from the doping agents that collected the sample.Ā
If every point in Kiprop's personal statement is true, the meta state of the sport is in more danger than we once thought. If every point in his statement is a falsehood, this is likely only the tip of the iceberg.Ā
While Kiprop wasn't my idol by any means, I certainly didĀ marvel at his accolades. It got me thinking though... What would my reaction have been if it were someone I truly looked up to?Ā One of my roommates and teammates looked over at me as he was reading the personal statement and said "if Eliud's cheating, I'm quitting running."Ā What if it were Eliud Kipchoge that had received a positive test for a banned substance? Personally, I'd be very distraught. It would be a difficult pill to swallow that one of my greatest inspirations was a facade.Ā
If Kiprop's example and the overall poor state of the sport has any effect on you, let it be this: Let it teach you to be your own inspiration. As cliche as that may sound, there simply isn't enough stability in dependence alone to carry us to our own breakthroughs. Running in its purest form is an individual sport, and learning to useĀ individuality and independence as a self-sustaining force is everything.Ā
