        while not exactly expecting the surprise attack, it only has him laughing. a better response than he would usually expect, especially given… well, it’s important not to think about last year. “i almost didn’t come,” he admits, giving him a quick look over.”nevermind about that. are you sure you’re okay? you look like you’ve had a bit…” they trail off, another breath of laughter escaping them. “where did you even get this?”

“well, it’s a good thing you did! it wouldn’t be a party without you,” noah smiled as he took another, rather generous sip of his drink. “oh i am more than okay- i’m great!” he laughed, “i couldn’t tell you- i’m pretty sure someone just handed it to me.”

“Yooo Noah” Matteo said, taking a sip of his drink as he made his way over to the other. “How’s it going? Love the costume”

“matteo!” noah returned the other’s enthusiasm in his greeting, a wide smile already plastered across his face. “i’m doing great!” he added an enthusiastic nod, “thanks! it was sort of last minute but i think it really came together-”

“dude, you’re famous—get your own chips,” river chuckles, “and don’t celebrities, like, attend celebrity halloween parties? or are you party-crawling?”

"what does being famous have to do with this?” noah’s eyebrows furrowed as he once again made an attempt to grab a handful of chips. “most do, but i’d much rather spend the night with my friends.”

"joey !” noah let out a loud cry as he practically threw himself at his friend, ultimately winding up with his arm flung around the other male’s neck. “i am so glad you’re here!” he continued, his words clearly slurred as he struggled to hold on to the bright red cup in his hand. “do you need a drink?”

“y’think i could shove all of these nachos in my mouth?”

“i recon you could,” noah responded with a laugh, “but i’ll be mad if you don’t share with me,” he added, before reaching for a handful of chips.

         as much as they want to understand, noah’s explanation doesn’t… quite reach them. even so, joseph doesn’t want to look stupid—or worse, make his friend feel inadequate because of his own inability to grasp the topic. “oh, i guess that makes sense,” is said instead, a nod offered up as compensation. “do you really think hank could do that? i mean, would do that? i know he could probably make just about anything.”

in hindsight, noah probably should have skipped the explanation once joseph made it clear he had no clue what he was talking about. but the thought of knowing something that joey didn’t, was well, kind of exciting. it wasn’t often that he knew something someone else didn’t. “right,” he smiled, “it wouldn’t hurt to ask him,” he offered with a shrug, “i’m sure if you’re nice about it he wouldn’t mind. he probably has some already.”

“hello diego,” noah greeted the other male with a smile as he came to a stop in front of his table. “do you mind if i join you? it would seem all of the other tables are full,” he laughed. on his first glance around the crowded shop, noah hadn’t noticed a single familiar face. his second glance, is when he’d noticed diego bent over a book. he hoped the other wouldn’t mind - though based on how they met, he was pretty confident that he wouldn’t.

         still thoroughly confused, joseph shakes their head. “no, i’ve never heard of that before. how do you use it for months?” maybe knowing the exact amount of days in a month isn’t useful now, but knowing how to use the tool might be. “i’ll have to ask around and see if someone has something that can record… i don’t think i could go out and buy one right now.”

“oh,” noah responded, clearly he’d been hoping that joseph had heard of the trick. “so basically - you start with your first knuckle and that’s january, february is the gap between it and the next knuckle - the months on your knuckles have thirty one days,” he smiled. it wasn’t remotely important, but he felt a certain amount of pride in knowing something. “i’m sure you can find one around here somewhere,” he responded, “or maybe hank can make one.”

          “Oh,   when  I  was  younger,   I  went  back  and  forth  between  here  and  Los  Angeles  where  my  dad  lives.   But  then  we  got  into  an  argument  and  I  don’t  really  speak  to  him  anymore.”   Sometimes  she  wished  that  she  did,   but  the  argument  was  always  on  her  mind,   guilt  pulling  at  her.   “Always  feels  weird  to  come  back.”

“we lived in los angeles for a while,” noah smiled, “but my parents eventually decided to settle in new york,” he explained, “i’ve spent time there though, it’s lovely.”

“i have a special cover for it. it’s like a raincoat—” river starts to gesture but stops when he realizes how embarrassing it’ll be to talk about his special wing covers, “—never mind. it’s a whole thing… unnecessary to talk about.” instead, he pivots to: “can’t argue with you on that one.” as a matter of fact, his mother calls him every day to check up on him and ask him if he wants to spend a little more time back home. he tries to do so as often as he can, but… “fair enough. i do miss swimming in pools, though. i love… floating, i guess. feeling weightless.”

noah’s brow remained furrowed as he listened to the other’s explanation of his special wing covers. “right, so why not use those for swimming?” he asked, his eyebrows still furrowed. if they stayed like this any longer, they could become permanently furrowed, though noah didn’t seem too concerned. “floating is nice,” he nodded in agreement, “i’ve always enjoyed seeing how long i can stay under water. there’s just something so peaceful about it.”

Matteo shrugged “You’ll learn, or you won’t and you’ll figure out some other way to succeed.” He suggests before nodding. “Yeah” Matteo breaths out the words. “That’s a similar reason why I came back. I don’t know, the attacks just made me think about how I could do so much more if I actually like, tried and all”

“right,” noah responded, his voice trailing off. he elected not to add that he was terrified of not learning anything. he didn’t want to come off as pathetic, or rather, more pathetic seeing as he already felt pretty pathetic. “yeah, that’s exactly why i’m here,” he managed to muster up a smile.

    before you say anything, yes, i do look much better. victory looks good on me but i can’t take all the credit.” irena was a strategist but she had barely done anything in the fall of essex house. still, as an executive she’d marvel in the glory. “don’t worry, i’m quite better. a few tired days but it’s a great improvement. tell me, how have you been, my confidant?”

“you look positively fabulous,” noah smiled as he watched his friend, “i’m glad you’re well,” he added. he meant it too - he had grown quite fond of irena, he cared deeply about her wellbeing. and it wasn’t just because he’d been the one to save her. “i’ve been good,” he nodded.

He’s been through a lot of different places in his life, done emergency work on men bleeding out from all manner of injuries in bombed out buildings to late at night in dark alleyways, he’d even seen a g-ddamn dinosuar in the middle of the city! Still, a film set? One of the stranger places he’s been. Especially sat in the middle of it being rushed to the person who on the face of it, doesn’t look too injured. The amount of fuss over one person… Bizarre. “Hey, Noah?” he’d been told his name like it meant something, they’re not familiar to August. “I’m August. Want to fill me in on what’s happened?”

“i keep telling them that i’m fine!” noah insisted, a loud hmph escaping from his lips as he folded his arms across his chest. he wasn’t, his ankle hurt something awful but that was beside the point. “it’s just my ankle, i can heal it myself!” he continued, almost as if he were trying to convince himself of that fact.

“can’t swim, doofus,” river deadpans, thumb pointing behind him, “if these suckers get wet, it’ll take me two weeks to blow dry them. and that’s already on high.” he does, however, decide to take a respectable two-foot-distance seat beside noah, slipping out of his shoes and socks before he does. “and what do you mean? isn’t it a perk of being famous that you can do whatever you want?”

“wait if you can’t get your wings wet how do you take a shower?” noah asked his eyes wide as he looked at river. seeing as it hadn’t occurred to him that river couldn’t go swimming, he definitely hadn’t put any thought into the logistics of taking a shower. “i mean sometimes,” he shrugged, “my mom tries to keep my schedule full. i think she’s worried i’d get into trouble otherwise,” he continued, his brow momentarily furrowing, “also i don’t know many people with pools.”

Matteo hummed quietly “Well, going to class would be the first important step” He laughs before shaking his head “But honestly, as long as you listen to what they are saying, and you know, try” Matteo shrugs “Then you’ll probably be fine.” He pauses “So what made you decide to start the whole process?”

“right,” noah nodded, it made sense - he just didn’t feel the need to say that part out loud. “i’ve never been the best when it comes to listening,” his eyebrows briefly furrowed, “i’m sick of feeling useless,” he responded, “i want to do something.”
