some notes about this piece:
iâd call this a âstudyâ not bc iâm humble bragging abt the level of refinement or detail, but bc my intention in making it was to work on my technical art skills. a study of random floating objects is not enough to hold my attention for very long lolâŚi have to commit to a full drawing to have the motivation to actually figure things out
anyway the point of this study was 1) to work on my interior design skills, 2) push my use of lighting, and 3) try out a technique of focusing the detail in the light areas to create a better composition and sense of focus
interior design â iâm still not great at storytelling w environments, so i wanted to improve on that area. i really love the nod krai building and prop designs; theyâre all jagged, uneven, and have a sense of age and wear to them, not to mention it was interesting to see almost no wood used as the material. i tried to pay more attention to the details in my drawing, and have each detail reveal something about flinsâs character (er, my interpretation of it, at least). it might be fun to see what yâall are able to find on your own, though i can make a follow-up post explaining all the little details if u want :)
lighting â my past interior scenes have been almost completely flooded with light, so i tried using bolder shadows and really think about how the light would interact with everything. a part of this was trying to add texture to differentiate materials from each other, as my approach to rendering characters very smoothly tends to make something like a wall or table look too plasticky. something i still struggle with is creating more emotional or mood-based color schemes; i feel like the colors of my interior scenes always turn out quite realistic, but thatâs mostly because i struggle enough making the colors cohesive in the first placeâŚthatâs something to work on in future studies
detail and focus â i usually end up filling every inch of a scene w detail, bc i sometimes get tunnel vision and donât want any area to look boring up close. as a result iâve felt like my past interiors look super dense and lack clear readability and focus. so i used a technique of pushing detail, texture, and color only in the lit areas, and let the shadows be very low in detail, using only a subtle gradient or low contrast detailing. (you can also do the opposite: detail the dark areas, and leave the light areas as more flat). not quite sure if i pulled this off! i feel the urge to go in and add more detail to the shadows, but maybe thatâs just the detail demons talkingâŚhowever, i think having this kind of restraint will be better for my comics especially (using light and shadow to carve out bigger shapes so the page as a whole looks more interesting; iâve made the mistake of focusing too much on individual panels, and having every page look the same from a distance!)
