“I assure you, I am unharmed,” the pyromancer insisted, brushing off the pain now coursing through her leg.
It was foolish of Ayden, perhaps, to attempt her rigorous sword-dancing exercises in the wake of resurrection recovery.
“It is but a minor flesh wound, Audrey, Darling. Do not fret.”
“are you… throwing up in there?”

“----- I am alright, Sofia, Darling,” came the Pyromancer’s hoarse reply, adjusting her skirt and flushing the loo before she stepped into the two’s shared dormitory.
“I believe it is simply a reaction to the medication I have been prescribed from the medics ever since my injuries.”

mum. god it felt good to hear that again. she had thought—– thought she’d never hear it again, never see her girl again. hear her chastise her, laugh again—- never hear anything from her again. never get to see her again. and there was so much that she wouldn’t be able to do now—- paralyzed—– but she was ALIVE and that was all that mattered. she was alive. alive. alive. her girl. seeing the tears lining ayden’s eyes only made jessica’s worse, thick tears building up and dribbling down her cheeks as she moved her hand up to fix the girl’s hair, adjust it so it wasn’t in her face. she almost missed the maximoff comment, so caught up in the moment. almost. a maxmoff had done this—- made sense. wanda and her brood were scarily strong. she’d look into that later. “a WASTE?” the last syllable of the word caught in her throat, the woman feeling her breath almost choked out of her. “your life isn’t a waste. i would have—- hell, still would—– trade my life for yours, kid.” she pressed her hand against the girl’s forehead, sniffing and working on calming her breathing down. she could remember the fearful, self loathing girl she had first met years ago. could remember teaching her. taking her in. making it official. making ayden hers. could see it all again in her mind just looking at ayden. she didn’t know what she was going to do when she thought she was dead—- didn’t want those memories to end. now they didn’t have to. “i don’t do wastes, remember? nothing’s a waste. ‘specially you.” breathing in again, jessica blinked down at the girl, finally moving to step away and pull a chair up. “no complaints? you sure? cus i’ll end these fuckers if they’re not giving you everything.” she grinned, wiping a hand across her cheek. “i’m fine now that i can see you, ayd.” she paused, biting down on her lip for a moment. “love you, kiddo. you dunno how scared i was that i wouldn’t get to say that ever again—– at least to a living you.”
The Duchess had opened her mouth to respond, careful not to disrupt the position the doctors had seemed to so meticulously place her in, when those words had left her mother’s mouth; Love you, Kiddo. It was the first time the Abecassis could recall ever seeing Jessica cry. Actual tears streaking down her cheeks and Ayden could not refrain from the feelings of guilt now brimming inside of her. Guilty for dying. For causing her loved ones such pain. It was not fair to Jessica, nor Daisy, nor any of her friends and family who cared for her. This was her fault, in some form or fashion, the pyromancer was certain. Wrong place, wrong time. She could have prevented this ----- “I love you, too, Mum. With all of my heart. You have been such a wonderful mother to me, and ----- Do not cry, Mum, please. I am alright. There are situations far worse than death. If you ask me, the universe could have offered me punishments too severe for even I to handle.” Trying to make light of any situation was how the Duchess was raised, especially when it involved those with whom she was emotionally attached to. “I possess no complaints, Mum. They have been very good to me, here. I am calm and I am comfortable and I cannot ask for more at the moment.” She smiled weakly, pale face giving way to the sickly undertone which the witch so desperately tried to veil under her facade of unyielding strength. “I am not going to leave you, of that I am certain. You have my word, Mum. I love you too much.”

phase. jessica kept her arms crossed, watching ayden for a moment before speaking lowly. “doesn’t look like a phase to me, ayden. you wanna try again? better excuse?”
Ayden was forced to stifle a cringe at the sight of Jessica’s body language. Stern. Disappointed? Perhaps.
A soft sigh escaped from her lips, the sole plea for understanding which the pyromancer could muster.
“----- There is no excuse, Mum,” the daughter muttered, tone cold. “It was my mistake. I was at fault. But there are certain habits of mine which, once started, I could not break.”

she kept her back to ayden, attention on the pot on the stove instead. she was cooking. or trying to. “she left,” (CAROL CAROL CAROL HER CAROL), and even though she’s trying to talk casually, not let anything slip past,the woman can feel her heart clench just mentioning it. “there wasn’t anything to tell.”
Ayden’s features softened, expression sympathetic as she stepped forward to drape her arms around the woman’s waist.
“Oh, Mum,” the duchess cooed softly, resting her chin into the nook of Jessica’s neck.
“She will come back. You and I both know it. She has always returned, Mum. This time will be no different. I promise.”
A soft, gentle kiss was planted on the woman’s cheek as Ayden stepped away from the embrace and next to her mother in the kitchen. Casual was best when it came to Jessica Drew.
“I love you, mum. Would you like some help with supper?”
“I regret it all. I really do, I swear. Please, please– let’s fix this, please.” [ayden, probably about her addiction and about being the disgrace to the family]
“Hey, HEY” Daisy began, fingers grazing her daughter’s cheek. “There is nothing that cannot be fixed, not if we want them to be. It will be okay, love. I promise” @ayden-abecassis
“I do not know how to fix it, Mother,” came the Duchess’ reply, the raven-haired girl leaning subtly into Daisy’s gentle touch. “I do not know how to fix myself ----” Her words heavy, tone morose. “---- No matter how much I may wish to do so.”

If it wasn’t his sister, if it was anyone else, Avery could see him replying with some smart-ass remark and being his usual troublesome self. But he just couldn’t find it in himself to do so. The comment he was going to make died on his tongue, and he couldn’t help the way his expression fell a little. If he wasn’t careful, he knew the images would start to swim in his mind: Ayden, the last time he had seen her, so young– to Ayden the first time he saw her again. Broken.
“I always worry about you,” the twin muttered.
To be honest, he didn’t know how to behave around her these days. And to be fair… she was a completely different person. A stranger even. Avery supposed he should have just been himself, but that was a mess even when he tried to untangle all of it. To expose that to Ayden, who probably saw him as a stranger as well– fucking dumb.
“Is there anything I can do for you…?”
It would be forever strange to the duchess as to how her brother managed to fake his death and disappear without even the slightest inkling of an insinuation to the fact and still claim that he always worries about her. Ayden could have scoffed, albeit she found herself mentally restraining herself out of the desire to refrain from utilizing crudeness as weapons in arguments. She could handle herself respectably, as a lady should, and she also felt her heart growing warmer upon seeing the defeated look in her twin brother’s eyes.
Perhaps, just maybe, Avery was offering the truth. Or some sort of it. She was not sure what to believe, anymore, her entire life up until present some fabrication of the lies other people had told, but Avery would always remain her one and only twin brother, no matter the anger she felt bubbling inside of her.
“You have done enough, brother,” there is an underlying sadness in her tone, unmasked by the sleek, fronted demeanour of her duchess disposition. “You may now be absolved of your guilt, for I relieve you of your duties towards caring for me.”

“w—what?” her breath catches in her throat, panic swelling in her chest, threatening to choke her out. avery gives her friend a horrified look, mouth feeling dry as she steps back. fire. no. “—ayden— put it out— ple— please.”
After the leakage of information, contents of files publicly revealed ----- Ayden understood. But unlike Avery, she would remain calm, confident ---- As a duchess should.
Palms splayed, the pyromancer focused on absorbing the energy of the pyre in front of her, jaw set as her body diluted the smog from the fire. It hurt, it burned, the gasoline intermixed with the flames ---- impure, her body resented her ---- But she had done it.
After a few moments had passed, the Abecassis took a heaving sort of breath, after which she directed her attention to the blonde before her.
“Are you alright now, then?”

It was a routine for the duchess now, stripping down to assess how the damage was alleviating over time from the detonation. Her scars, too, were what Ayden tended to focus the most of her attention towards; she was walking again, slowly, so those wounds would heal. But the ones which were continuously inflicted ----
The door to her dormitory creaked open and the pyromancer jumped, flushing deeply as none other than Nikolai Maximoff walked into the room whilst the duchess stood there, completely in the nude.
“Oh, goodness, Nikolai, you gave me a fright,”
she gasped, bowing her head in a display of modesty, shyness ---- The flushing across her cheeks and neck was deep crimson.
“My apologies --- I will retrieve a robe, and ----- Are you alright? I did not mean to cause you discomfort.”

He grinned as her cheeks flushed, a bit pleased with himself. He’d never had ‘game’ around Ayden, but it was nice all the same. “Whatever we want to do. It is a vacation after all. We can go explore, find somewhere to get a drink with an umbrella or something similarly pink.
It was the sort of smile she had grown accustomed to, one which had the duchess brimming with substantial joy. “I would love that, most definitely, Nikolai,” came the pyromancer’s reply, ecstatic at the thought of one of her most cherished people offering to partake in her love of exploration. “You may lead the way, I do not mind if we become lost.”

She stilled, not having known that Avery was here let alone alive. Daisy hugged her daughter closer, stroking her hair. “Oh sweetheart…” How do you tell someone it’s going to all be okay in a time like this? “We can get through this okay? Like everything else we’ve faced. I know we can. And you always have me to talk to, there is nothing to be sorry for”
The Duchess relaxed into her mother’s touch, softening in demeanour as the familiar sensations of warmth and security flooded through her. “He ----- He ruined me, mother...” Ayden’s voice was hoarse, the burden of a lifetime of longing amalgamated with anger, despair ----- It was a devastating combination, and the pyromancer found herself struggling to refrain from letting spew an onslaught of tears. “Though ---- You are correct; We will get through this. I have a new family now, one he is not apart of. I do not need him anymore.”
“I’m only trying to help and right now I think I have a much better idea of what you need than you do.”

“Are you certain about this statement?” The pyromancer hisses through clenched teeth, steadying herself as she seats herself up in bed. “For I have done splendidly at tending to my wounds and caring for myself up until present.”
