A note to all creatives:

Right now, you have to be a team player. You cannot complain about AI being used to fuck over your industry and then turn around and use it on somebody else’s industry.

No AI book covers. No making funny little videos using deepfakes to make an actor say stuff they never did. No AI translation of your book. No AI audiobooks. No AI generated moodboards or fancasts or any of that shit. No feeding someone else’s unfinished work into Chat GPT “because you just want to know how it ends*” (what the fuck is wrong with you?). No playing around with AI generated 3D assets you can’t ascertain the origin of. None of it. And stop using AI filters on your selfies or ESPECIALLY using AI on somebody else’s photo or artwork.

We are at a crossroad and at a time of historically shitty conditions for working artists across ALL creative fields, and we gotta stick together. And you know what? Not only is standing up for other artists against exploitation and theft the morally correct thing to do, it’s also the professionally smartest thing to do, too. Because the corporations will fuck you over too, and then they do it’s your peers that will hold you up. And we have a long memory.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking “your peers” are only the people in your own industry. Writers can’t succeed without artists, editors, translators, etc making their books a reality. Illustrators depend on writers and editors for work. Video creators co-exist with voice actors and animators and people who do 3D rendering etc. If you piss off everyone else but the ones who do the exact same job you do, congratulations! You’ve just sunk your career.

Always remember: the artists who succeed in this career path, the ones who get hired or are sought after for commissions or collaboration, they aren’t the super talented “fuck you I got mine” types. They’re the one who show up to do the work and are easy to get along with.

And they especially are not scabs.

To the executive who made the decision and the RND staff that told said exec to make that decision: the only reason you’re winning the race right now is because you’re the tortoise. Don’t be the fucking hare.

Today, tumblr staff posted a very long announcement on their blog, which you can find here.

It’s a long post that’s pretty hard to read, mostly because the entire thing reads like the writer was held at gunpoint by the zuck himself. (To the poor staff member who had to write this shitshow, I’m so sorry, may you get a raise for your efforts) Here are some of the main points:

Tumblr (the company) is concerned about gaining more users from outside sources, such as other social media sites

They’re planning on doing this by updating their advertising practices to the industry standard (basically, advertising tumblr the way Meta advertises Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, or the way Twitter advertises itself)

They want to change how tumblr looks when you’re not logged in so that more people are convinced to sign up (they didn’t say how, exactly) but that’s not fully fleshed out yet

Gave a very interesting statistic that the average tumblr user scrolls though 25 posts a day and did not specify wether or not this is good or bad (most likely because it’s fucking wrong)

Plan to improve their “algorithmic ranking capabilities on all feeds” (which I don’t understand fully, but it sure fucking sounds like data mining)

Plan to change thread mechanics again, but this time they’re collapsible

Plan on putting new creators in the forefront by boosting their visibility on all dashes, and “improving the feedback loop for creators” (which once again I don’t understand fully)

Plan on implementing spam filters when posts make rounds

There’s a lot more RND on their end about to happen, regarding notifications, emails and staff-to-user communications

Want to make emails more personal per creator (??????????)

Backend stuff regarding site stability and performance on mobile

TL;DR: Tumblr is attempting to catch up with other social medias by becoming more like Twitter, even though the whole reason they had a massive influx of users recently was because of their lack of invasive, intrusive and vile business practices to sell themself.

Needless to say, people are fucking pissed. A lot of this is the exact opposite of what tumblr users want, and feels like the thing that’ll make this site finally crash and burn alongside the others. Which is terrifying!

So if staff are reading this, I’m gonna repeat my statement: the singular reason your site ended up being refuge in this time of dying socials is because the bar is in hell, and you barely jumped it by not having the bells and whistles that everyone’s tired of. Don’t trip while you’re still ahead.

The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

@staff THE ABILITY TO CURATE OUR OWN DASHES IS THE BEST PART OF THIS SITE.

I can't think of many people who will stay around if some algorithm takes over and instead of seeing the things we actually want to see, we instead get fed nothing but blazed posts or whatever is most controversial atm.

STOP TRYING TO MAKE TUMBLR LIKE THE REST OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA HELLSCAPE.

So, y’know, maybe drop a comment on your favorite fic to let the author know you appreciate them and their work 🙂

Angst fics can help people come to terms with their own grief, begin healing, or give people that good cry that they need.

Smut fics can help people affirm and accept their sexuality. It can help them explore their sexuality in a safe way. They can also just be fun, and having fun is a drastically undervalued way to improve your mental health.

Dark fics can help people face their fears or process their trauma. It can make them feel safer and more secure. It can help them find their courage.

Fluff fics can give people rest and respite and comfort. It can give them hope that soft places exist and that maybe there is one out there for them. It can bring up their mood, which, if they have depression, can be a life saver.

And every fic people write makes someone feel less alone.

Point being, just because a particular thing doesn’t serve you, doesn’t mean it lacks value.

This is not to say that we have to consume all fic uncritically. Of course not. It is just to say that entire “genres” aren’t trash or lacking value just because they don’t serve you.

Just realized that the reason I love making friends on tumblr is because it’s exactly how you make friends on the playground as a six year old. No, I don’t know their name but they love mermaids too and built this awesome sand castle. No, I don’t know their age but their imaginary cheetah is friends with mine. You like this show? You like this character?? You can sing the theme song really loud??? Here is a flower crown. Here is a juice box. You can share my time and I might never see you again but part of you stays in my soul forever. In my mind we’re still on the swing set and the sky is blue and nothing will ever be wrong again.

I'm new to the fandom and very confused over something so I'm hoping you can explain: why is Tamlin blamed for Nesta and Elain being thrown in the Cauldron? He's a very shitty person, but he wasn't involved in their becoming fae? Didn't he yell at Ianthe in ACOWAR for involving Nesta and Elain? I'm so confused. Is there like a bonus scene I missed or something?

Hello, so in order to get Feyre back from Rhys, Tamlin worked with Hybern. However, from Tamlin’s pov:

Feyre was ready to marry him because she didn’t communicate with him about her trauma (neither did he with her)

His enemy who had made Feyre dance drunk and naked for months had stolen her. Like rhysand and tamlin killed each other’s families. Why would he not panic that Feyre is back in his clutches after what he subjected her to for months?

She sent a note saying she wasn’t coming back - but Tamlin knew she was illiterate and also that Rhys is a daemati capable of going in people’s heads.

Tamlin believed Rhys was the villain so did what he had to in order to save the woman he loved. He was not to know that Feyre genuinely was happy and was with Rhys 🤷🏻‍♀️ If he didn’t do anything to get her back, he’d have been villainised for “not doing enough” because for Feyre stans, if people aren’t kissing the ground she walks on, it’s not enough. (See Lucien not doing enough when he had known her for a few months, had been Tamlin’s friend for centuries, worked for him, offered sanctuary by him and still did what he could for Feyre at the risk of his position - and Feyre being happy to manipulate situations to make tamlin paranoid which put Lucien at risk).

Further, his court was severely weakened due to Amarantha. Doesn’t he have like a handful of sentries on his grounds at one point? His court is not in a position to fight against Hybern. Working with them served his courts interests. It would have kept the bulk of his people safe. Rhys did the exact same thing with Amarantha to save one city that nobody knew about. Tamlin did it for his entire court. More than that, he was also using Hybern’s intel against them, acting as a spy.

Ianthe was the one who encouraged the king to turn Nesta and Elain. She is shown to be manipulative and conniving. Even Azriel is made uncomfortable by her. Rhys knows she is in spring and doesn’t warn Feyre about her.

Feyre was the one who told Ianthe all the information about her sisters. Rhys promised to keep soldiers on duty when the sisters decided to remain in their home rather than come to Velaris but Feysand are never blamed for it. Despite bringing war to Nesta and Elain’s doorsteps and entangling them with the mortal queen. One of whom then has a vendetta against Nesta 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

It was not Tamlin’s fault. He just gets the blame because feysand stans have a weird obsession with vilifying him like they do with Lucien and Nesta.
