1984. Bathory
is the debut album. It was released in October, It is deemed by many fans and critics to be the first black metal record.
Bathory formed in 1983. Quorthon (then known as Ace, after Ace Frehley of KISS), a 17-year-old guitarist, was joined by bass guitarist Fredrik Melander and drummer Jonas Åkerlund. According to Quorthon, he settled on the name ‘Bathory’ after a visit to the London Dungeon, although Jonas says that it was taken from the Venom song “Countess Bathory”. Before settling on ‘Bathory’, the band considered several names; including Nosferatu, Natas, Mephisto, Elizabeth Bathory and Countess Bathory.
The album was originally to be named Pentagrammaton and to have a pentagram on the cover, but this name was scrapped when several people misread it as Pentagon. The pentagram was moved to the back and replaced with a re-touched portion of a drawing made by Joseph A. Smith in 1981 for the book Witches by Erica Jong. For the writing on the back cover, Quorthon bought a set of rub-on letters in the Old English font; however, he was one letter short (‘C’), and as a result, the second ‘C’ in “Necromancy” was replaced with an ’S’. The introduction, “Storm of Damnation”, was also mistakenly left off the tracklisting.
Daniel Ekeroth, author of the book Swedish Death Metal, described the album’s style as “basically a mix of the Satanic party rock of Venom and the energy of San Francisco thrash metal”. While Bathory leader Quorthon claimed to have not heard Venom before making the album and to be inspired by Black Sabbath, Motörhead and GBH, former bass guitarist Jonas Åkerlund claimed that Bathory was “exclusively” inspired by Venom during these days.
This is the album that has founded the black metal scene. By far, it is also one of the most important albums to have in any heavy metal collection known to mankind. this album is truly revolutionary for its time since no music like this was produced like this for a year as early as 1984. At the time, Quorthon, the lead front man and multi instrumentalist for the band, was 17 years old when he made this album.
