With the morning sun so bright, Luna slowly opens her eyes, but all she could manage was a squint. It was much too bright, she preferred to sleep in darkness, but Shawn likes waking up to the sun. Something about the way the sun hits her golden locks of hair. One of the many sweet things he has said to her. Many give her credit for saving Shawn from himself, but it was Shawn who saved her. Despite his past, she believes that Shawn is what represents what good we have left in the world. Something that's rare and should be cherished upon finding. She lazily reaches her arm over to the other side of the bed only to find it empty. Disappointed, she rolls over to the middle of the bed, only to fall on top of what feels like an envelope. Luna turns around to notice, that it's just that, an envelope. The paper looked antique, written was her first name in a calligraphy-type font. She hadn't seen penmanship like this since she studied ancient European history.
She sat up in the bed and carefully opened the envelope, gently taking the contents out, and finally unfolding the paper, which was written in the same style. She quietly read what the letter said to herself. Quietly fearing that she would be needed abroad for another assignment, she was pleasantly surprised to read this:
Dearest Luna,
Every morning before I start my day, I stand before you, watching you in your slumber. the sun always shines its light onto your beautiful golden locks. Your pale skin shines within the sunlight. Whenever you squint your eyes, I know that you will soon awaken and I would have the honor of spending another day with you. Another day to hold you close and to kiss your lips, which are softer than the clouds in the sky. Every moment, hour, and day I spend with you is a gift. My love for you is like no other, there isn't anyone in the world who has captured my heart like you did. You have stolen what's left of my heart and it's yours forever. I will spend the rest of my days returning the unconditional love you have given me. I will protect and cherish you forevermore. When I'm with you, I feel as if we are the core and everything else just swirls around, for you are all that matters.
With all my love,
Shawn
Finishing the letter, she held it close to her heart. Her hands tightly clenching the paper. Her cerulean hues filled with tears, which welled up so much, they began to fall down her blushing cheeks. Her bottom lip quivered, she was too flabbergasted to grasp reality. This was her reality, she had a man who loved her more than life itself. After a moment, that seemed like an eternity, Luna began to think clearly. "I feel as if we are the core and everything else just swirls around..." She repeats the last line of his letter to herself quietly. She realizes that today is the anniversary of the day they met in the grocery store, in the ice cream section. It finally hit her, that this letter wasn't all that was in store for her.
Luna gets out the bed and takes a short walk to the bathroom, where she showers and brushes her teeth. She comes out the bathroom and goes into the kitchen to feed the puppies, she walks them, and finally leaves the house to drive to the supermarket. She parks her car and enters the store, briskly walking to the ice cream section. Luna stares intently into the freezer door when she notices a pint of Ben and Jerry's peanut butter and fudge core, with a piece of paper attached to it. She takes the ice cream out the freezer and is suddenly flooded with memories. She remembers him standing there with his arm in a cast and his face swollen, she remembered gazing deep into his bright blue eyes and finding the good that is left in the world. Luna held back tears as she read what was on the paper, "Oh a man brought an umbrella to the ice cream section of a grocery store one time, because he heard there was a chance of sprinkles."
That silly joke he told her. The one she couldn't help but laugh at. she suddenly remembered their first date, after dinner they took a walk in the park to look at the stars and to eat gelato. it started to sprinkle and Shawn bought an overpriced umbrella for her, so her hair wouldn't get frizzy. He insisted that she was beautiful the way she was, but she begged to differ. Luna went to the self-checkout line, grabbed two spoons from the cafe, then quickly walked out the store. She went into her car and started driving towards the park on the outskirts of San Francisco.
