Just curious, but other than the IkoxJerkwad ship, what else is that bad about the Lunar Chronicles?
hooo boy. Let me just start by saying there’s a lot to discuss about tlc and I’m not here to insult everyone’s favourite books or start any fights that have already been fought (cresswell, anyone?) but i do love bitching, so:
My biggest problem is the Missed Opportunities. Something Marissa Meyer does a lot is telling instead of showing. For example in the first book Cinder and Kai and Dr Erland talk about how cyborgs are oppressed and treated unfairly by the gov but we never actually see that in action? Like what if Cinder had a friend that was taken in by the draft and never came back? Or they witnessed someone being arrested for no reason or literally just walked past some homeless cyborgs on the street. I mean, there’s no other cyborg characters other than Cinder (that I remember) which is kinda boring. And what about that time Scarlet went to watch Wolf fight? There was a bunch of cyborgs showing their parts freely and even celebrating them and that would’ve been pretty cool to learn more about but it was never mentioned again. I mean you can tell how much effort was put into the worldbuilding but we’re not actually shown anything! I only mentioned the cyborgs and I’m sure there’s more but I wanna move on.
The girls!! They’re so interesting and diverse and I love them but consider: they never talk. I get that MM had over 8 characters to juggle but one would think the girls would interact more given that they’re the main protagonists. Cinder barely communicates with the others (except iko) and unless I’m remembering wrong, Cress doesn’t have much of a relationship with any of them at all. Like! there was that one really touching scene where Scarlet is restraining Cinder by hugging her real close and is literally crying into her back while the sector is being rounded up and shot that’s completely glossed over? And hows about that time Winter used Scarlet to kill a man. Like, the girls never come together and say, “Hey, remember that time that thing happened? That was real fucked up. I’m sorry for using you like a puppet.”Not that they don’t have good and meaningful moments like “Broken isn’t unfixable” and idk some scenes between Scarlet and Winter where Scarlet wasn’t being totally insensitive towards Winter’s illness. But for a series that focuses on empowering women, the women don’t communicate nearly as often as I’d have liked them to.
These are just my opinions and it’s been a while since I’ve read the books. I mean, we could argue about representation and ships all day but these are the things that really bug me that no one else has mentioned. I really do love tlc and i think it has so much potential to be even better than it is now.
