A NIGHT WITH: LUNAR VACATION

I found myself waiting in front of the La Santa in downtown Santa Ana, holding my bulky medium format camera and my phone, waiting for a response from Lunar Vacation, a five-piece band based in Atlanta that classifies their music as “pool rock.” I’d contacted them a week or two before regarding taking their portraits before their show, and we’d agreed on 7:00, an hour before doors were set to open. I was starting to lose hope on the shoot, though, as it was about 7:20, the sun was starting to set, and I hadn’t been told where they’d be meeting me.

Luckily, guitarist Maggie Geeslin emerged from the venue shortly after my dispiritedness, apologizing for the group’s tardiness. She introduces me to the band, and we begin to congregate around the taco truck that parked itself next to the venue. The boys purchase some tacos from the truck, and Maggie asks how they taste. They respond with a satisfying thumbs-up, with their mouths full. We were about ready to embark on a little walk around downtown for our photoshoot, but we were missing one more member.

I spot lead singer, Grace Repasky, pacing down the sidewalk. She had taken a walk to CVS to get some candy. We introduce ourselves, and she says something along the lines of “I was looking at Google Maps, and the route was so confusing!” Then, we head off to take a couple of photos.

Lunar Vacation by me. Got to shoot their portraits before their show in Santa Ana. The focus is completely off because my contact was agitating my eye that I use to focus with so I had to take it out, but I like this shot anyway. Very grateful to have shot for this talented group of people
