Flowers of the Void: Story 2
Rue was born into the Void Cult. They were a devout believer but they were considered to be a bit weird among many other members and were isolated. Then they met Iris, and she was also quite isolated within the cult with her brother, Asher, due to them being orphans. She didn’t mind how much they talked or what they talked about, she just listened. They’d help her with her garden and she taught them how to make dye from plants.
One day, they were summoned by the cult’s council. They were informed that there was a member that needed to be rooted out because she was a distraction. Iris, oh why did it have to be her? Why did they choose Rue to kill her? Was it because of their attachment to her? Were they too obvious? They were given two weeks to kill her and bring proof of her death to the council.
They locked themself away in their quarters to grapple with their thoughts and write down the recent events. Iris still came to check on them and even brought them food and drink, even some herbs for if they were facing an ailment. They didn’t want to kill her but also didn’t want someone else to do so. Then a voice in their head spoke to them, an offer from the Void: If they killed her successfully they would get a reward from the void. Who were they to turn down an offer from the Void itself? They accepted.
Nearing their deadline they called Iris out to a field “to talk”, she accepted. They talked about random topics for a while, it was the most Rue had heard her talk, they were going to miss this. It was time. They sat in silence for a few long seconds before Rue said something, something to take her off guard, something true. They don’t remember what happened before realizing she was gone, lying in the field, bleeding. They collected what they needed, they chose an eye, returned to the settlement and submitted it.
They hoped everything would end there but it didn’t, Asher went looking for his sister. Rue couldn’t even look him in the eye when he asked them questions about finding her and if they knew anything. All they could do was maneuver to get around to the door, yell an apology, and run. Dear Void was Asher fast, and yet they escaped, for now. It didn’t take long for the worst day to come, the day Asher found out.
Rue had left their quarters to get some ingredients and stuff for the plants they had kept, when they got back they saw him, he was holding their journal, he knew. They dropped what they were holding as Asher turned to them, he was furious. They started running, but this time they caught him. There were several people injured including Rue, on the brink of death. When they were back to being fully conscious they were informed of his death, there was a rumor spread by the council that he had been driven to madness by the Usurper Gods.
A month after everything went down Rue had what they considered to be a lapse in judgment, they made the choice to run away from the cult. They were found by a city’s night patrol and taken to a hospital. After they managed to inform the doctors of parts of their past they were admitted to a system that would help them recover mentally and reintegrate into society. That was 9 years ago. They stopped going to therapy and survive mostly off of odd jobs now.
