It took a few days for Daryl to come back to work due to his head injury, Null chose to take up his shifts for two reasons, one was because they felt kinda bad for him getting injured, the second reason - the more prominent reason - was extra cash. Who doesn’t like extra cash? Over the few days other things happened as well of course. Handwritten notes full of compliments and words of good luck during their shifts, with small presents of candy or origami stars. Null was both kind of flattered and put off by these gifts, and it felt wrong to not accept them. They still felt like they were being watched, but only when they were outside their apartment. Aside from all that, everything was perfectly normal!
After about ten days, Daryl was back at work, and very out of it. Null arrived and went and got ready without any issue. As they were leaving the dressing rooms they saw Daryl looking like he was ready to confront them, “Y O U!” He shouted as he ran at Null and held them against a wall by their collar, “Stop leaving dead rats on my door with cryptic messages! You can’t be taking what happened THAT seriously!”
“Wh-What are you talking about!? I don’t even know your damn address!”
“Liar! I gave you my address on a blue sticky note 2 months ago!” He yelled at them.
“I threw that away as soon as you left!” They responded. “Why would I even care enough to do something like that!”
“Who else would have the motive to do th-” suddenly he stopped, dropped Null, and fell to the floor, gasping for air.
“What the…” they looked outside to see a shadowed figure with eyes staring straight at him full of fury. Then it looked up at Null, its expression softened as if it felt bad for scaring them, and it disappeared. They were standing in shock and Daryl was passed out on the floor.
The door opened with a jingle.
“Daryl, I’m here to- pick… you… up.” Daryl’s sister, “What happened here?”
“I- don’t. know.” Null explained what they saw while Daryl’s sister called an ambulance for him. Before she left she gave Null fifty bucks as compensation for her brother’s behavior and said to tell the manager what happened and call a lift home as it was clearly not safe here and they were still recovering.
Null did exactly that, reported what happened to the manager and then called Clarissa to come pick them up. Clarissa ended up bringing Indigo along because he was also worried about Null and they ended up sleeping over. In the morning, only a minute after Clarissa and Indigo promised to come back to check on them and left and they closed the door there was a knock. Null hesitantly opened the door and looked around before noticing a new note in front of their door.
I’m sorry you were blamed for my actions and I scared you.
That was far from my intention. I’ll make it up to you.
This note made a list of things of things clear:
The figure with the eyes knows where they live.
The figure with the eyes has been leaving these notes and gifts.
The figure with the eyes has probably been watching them.
None of these made Null any more comfortable and they were now very suspicious of whoever this figure is. If they were willing to strangle a guy nearly to death from a distance they were certainly a dangerous individual.
Daryl is rather quickly released from the hospital and his sister takes him home while lecturing him about his behavior. He was mostly ignoring her and looking out the window when he saw, a woman, watching him. Time seemed to slow down as they locked eyes, her eyes weren’t normal, she wasn’t normal. Her eyes narrowed at him and she disappeared as time seemed to resume normally. He felt, off, like a feeling of impending doom, like something awful was about to happen to him. And he shrugged it off, because he didn’t know this woman, what beef could she possibly have with him?
The next day he went for a walk, he felt as if he were being watched but ignored it, imagining it was someone who would somehow be interested in this douchebag of a person. “Excuse me, sir,” a soft voice with a sinister hint said to him. He turned to see a woman with black hair and a face mask, “You’re tall, could you help me get my cat down from a tree, it got stuck.”
“What’s in it for me?” He asked.
“I don’t have any money, but I could provide other forms of ‘payment’.” Of course, Daryl accepted. She led him to a quiet part of town, the kind of quiet where no one would hear him scream. He helped her get her cat down and requested his payment. “Ah, yes, follow me.”
He followed her to an alley where she gently set her cat down, the cat then went towards him and rubbed up against him, then he heard echoing laughter, “You silly, little, dirty, rat.” She pulled off her mask as she turned to look at him, as the cat turned to shadowy hands grabbing him and covering his mouth, pulling him downwards.
“You won’t ever hurt them or make them uncomfortable ever again, I’ll make sure of it. Don’t worry, it will only hurt for a moment.” His sight was soon overcome by darkness.
