i always felt so conflicted about ramona flowers. like i desperately wanted to be a manic pixie dream girl in her image, like it would justify all the parts of me that didnt quite make sense, even to myself. or maybe i just wanted to make out with her. or maybe i wanted to kick scott's ass for treating her like he did. or maybe i just wanted to roller skate.

anyway. the new animated show was adorable and very inspiring. love to watch her go zoom.

i'll be bringing prints of this piece to Rose City Comic Con in a couple weeks! very exciting! very scary! wish me luck!!!!

Bubbline sleepover <3

it's been a long time since I did a real fanart piece- years and years. But i'm such a huge fan of adventure time, and this couple particularly, and i wanted to show them a little love im super happy with how this came out! especially their hair :o I'll be bringing prints of this with me to Rose City Comic Con in a couple weeks! very nervous about doing a big con but im excited too.

I've been doing a bit of creative writing lately, trying to get my big tangled world building project tacked down and recorded. it's fun. it's like info dumping but I don't even have to hold anyone hostage to listen.

I really want to do narrative work and plot at some point but that's Scary so instead I'm writing up lore like it's encyclopedia entries.

damn I really wanted to finish the Ramona piece this week but instead I've been stuck in bed with the plague ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

artist alley day 1:

tl;Dr bad day

got in early, got my booth the rest of the way set up. I'm learning a lot of stuff I'll want to do different next time but I'm still p pleased with how my setup looks in the end.

and then the actual day started, and things got rapidly worse.

I just ... didn't sell anything. by the end of the day I was about half way to covering my table fee, which means if I'm lucky I might break even this weekend. could be worse I guess - but that still makes this the worst market I've done this year (from a pure finances perspective), and I'm reeling that something I was so excited for could turn out this poorly. plus I'm really close to a bunch of rhythm arcade games and having to listen to 3+ simultaneous sound tracks would drive me crazy on the best of days.

I'm very very grateful that I had a friend offer to help out and I was able to leave the booth with them and go hide out in the bathroom when I got too thoroughly overwhelmed, around 5 hours in. and they kept me company the rest of the day, which was immensely kind and really kept me sane.

I'm really embarrassed. this has to be the most public place I've ever broken down before, and it's really easy to see when I've been crying. it's taking a lot of effort to be kind to myself right now.

the day wasn't a complete failure - I met a ton of really nice people, saw some really cool cosplays and two live parrots, learned a lot about how this sort of event operates. saw well over a dozen Mikus, which warms my heart. Miku if you're reading right now hiiiiii ily. dug through my file folders and found a smattering of old old fanart which I'm printing out right now. not a lot, but I imagine at this point anything will be better than what I have right now. too much original work for this space, not nearly enough blorbos.

day 2 should be better, or if nothing else, far shorter. and I have a month between this and comic con, enough to implement what I'm learning here. as much as it sucks I'm really glad I'm leaning this all now and not at comic con.

I forgot to follow up on this but -

I printed some old art out that evening, rearranged my booth a little for Sunday, and did a notably better sales (even with a much thinner crowd- everyone else I talked to did worse Sunday) which means the changes I made Worked. lots of lessons to bring with me to comic con in September. that's why I'm focusing so much on new fanart right now.

it was also just a much more pleasant day all around. I brought more snacks and lower expectations. had some real conversations with other vendors. made some trades. sold my rickety old grid walls which I hate so much, to a vendor who really wanted them.

the event organizer, like the CEO, ended up reaching out to all the artists to apologize for how poorly things went and to solicit our feedback to bring to negotiations with the hotel. so, I doubt anything will come of it, but at least it wasn't just me.

also I saw almost 20 Miku cosplays over the weekend and that's very very cool

ngl I've always really struggled with maintaining a blog presence but it feels good to be posting WIPs and thoughts and stuff. I can't do this shit on IG cuz it's all so alg driven and public. there's metrics there. this feels much more private and secure. and I have so many thoughts! so much happening! I need a release valve for some of it. I'm not gonna try to make promises about maintaining it but I'm enjoying posting rn, might see how it plays out.

something not quite right here but it's coming along alright.

I want this one to be a bit looser and simpler than the bubbline piece anyway. easier in some ways, but composition and stylization take on much more importance when I cut down the detail resolution and that causes other challenges.
