Hellaâs hand twitches when Adelaideâs fingers brush over it, but she doesnât jerk it away. Because. Sheâs being civil. Adelaide is standing a bit closer than civility might call for, though.Â
âForces? What do you mean, forces? Who - whatâs running this place?â
Hellaâs heart drums against her ribs. From behind her, she can feel the dragonâs palpable anxiety and discontent. With Adeladie in front of and Temeraire behind, she feels agitated, confined, like an animal in too small of a cage.Â
âLook,â she says. âLook, can we all just -â Hella breaks off, places a heavy but careful hand on Adeladieâs upper arm, as though to move her back a couple paces. Really, though, itâs almost an excuse to touch her, to check if sheâs real. She feels as solid as anything, as present and alive as she was back in Nacre.
As she was when Hella killed her.
Hella lets her hand drop, as though the god-queen had proven to be too heavy to be budged. She glances down at Temeraire, a little embarrassed to have made that odd gesture.
âSo youâre sayingâŠyouâre saying, you lost more than just possessions,â she mutters, speaking to the both of them. âWhat kind of a place is this?â
âItâs powerful, for it captures gods,â Adelaide says lightly. She is distracted from the conversation and immensely pleased with herself. Hellaâs fingers are callused in a way utterly unlike hers. The contrast of that controlled strength is striking. The weight on her arm.
âAnd we get entertainments and trinkets.â Her eyes follow Hellaâs to Temeraire, and she smiles ruefully at his witness to her ensnarement. From his pose, he wants to protect them both. He is a real peacemaker, for such a clawed and fanged creature! Between him and Hella, these are two unforgettable bodyguards. âBut it is easier now with your captain here, isnât it, Temeraire?â
Temeraire watches them carefully, and when it seems there wonât be any violence after all, he relaxes a minuscule amount, though he still wants to push between them. The tension between them is... strange, and he doesnât understand it, and he canât ask but he doesnât very well like not understanding things. He shifts, then tips his head and considers both of them, back and forth, pupils wide.
Finally, he slides around behind Adelaide, brushing against her comfortingly, then settles at the opposite side from where he was, facing the both of them, backing neither and still ready to push between them if need be.
âI do not know who is in power here, but the communications come from the protocols, who I have been told are likely not people at all but machines like the train, perhaps? And yes, they did not take any possessions of mine, but... but the things that could have made me very dangerous, I think.â He cocks his head in the other direction, considering, then says, âBut there is a great deal we simply do not know.â
And then his ruff perks, the long drooping whiskers to either side of his snout quivering with joy and excitement as his nostrils flare, and he says, âYes! Yes, it is much easier when there is someone that you know, and I do not know how I could ever do without Laurence, truly. He is sometimes a little peculiar, but he is very smart and brave and kind. Oh- I hope that you can meet him, perhaps!â
And just like that, all of his tension is gone, replaced with the eager energy of a prancing puppy.
