"Oh my beloved, it's all for nothing..."
- Mothman by UNEQUAL
Scorched Earth.
A photo collage made for my design class. The theme was "dystopia and utopia", so I was inspired by the massive wildfires we now experience yearly due to climate change. I can't think of anything more dystopian than rendering the Earth uninhabitable out of our own selfishness.
This Night is a Turning Knife
Eventually, the end.
It went through us
The edge
Of a finely sharpened
blade as it cuts
Separating.
When I came in the room
I thought you had left
Your frame
so small
You were nearly gone already.
I sat at the foot
of the bed
you would know last
watching the
slow
breaths
leave you.
As we all leave
Home
Eventually setting out for lands
Beyond.
This world could no longer hold you.
You left us
Through the front door.
No waves
Hugs
Goodbyes
Of any sort.
Your departure
Heralded
By twinkling lights
Of red
and green
cold outside
and a chill
inside, though the heat is on.
It used to be my favorite day
Now, I sit alone
And wish it to be over with
Quickly
Mercifully.
Please,
end it soon.
Hand of God,
Drop the blade.
Let her go.
You are greeted
By visions
Of those from your past
Those who left
Before you.
Was it a comfort?
They waited for you
They knew where to look.
You speak
As though they are right
Here
Familiar hands
Leading you onward.
Now we are
Apart.
I am forgetting you, I realize.
At first
it happened
Slowly
Then it went all at once.
You are blurred
As if through a lens
That will not focus.
I narrow my eyes
Hoping to sharpen the image
But
I can’t see you.
The blade has slashed through
Cutting you
away from
me.
At Once Mortal / At Once Divine
We stare, unblinking, at the expanse of space above at midnight, looking to zenith and seeing only posthumous messages from long-dead stars in the form of light waves. Cries that beg for just a moment more of existence within the vacuum. Yet, for as long as there has been life on this rock, before it even possessed eyes with which to gaze upon the heavens, it has been bathed in these mournful pleas. How long have we as a species looked to the skies, pondered the loneliness of the lights above, the loneliness of ourselves within them? At whatever point it may have been, we found it unbearable, and soon set out to populate it time and time again with visions of ourselves made divine. The hubris, the unbelievable humanism of it, to paint the heavens with our own visages.
I wonder, do they look back and also see themselves? Or is it just us, staring wide-eyed and ever hopeful at a truly uncaring void?
Veils
Soft static of dusk
lay hands upon me
and admit for once
that although we both
survive sun-down to sun-up
to sun-up to sun-down
a day will come
when I will not
meet you here nor
see your shadows settle
giving way to night
and yet another promise
of a peaceful slumber
will I be denied.
Little peak at a WIP I’ve been poking at whenever I’ve had the time over the last few weeks.
"In Your Nature"
Shaking, he glances pensively in the rearview mirror at the flames of the farmhouse where his victims had so recently lied slumbering. That inner voice that he can't quite identify as either his father or the devil answers his unspoken question:
"It's in your nature, boy."
This story is a series of vignettes I've been writing based off of some song title prompts. Stay tuned for further additions!
And He shall on dead ground alight, bringing with Him the fury of a tortured Earth.
Lil ram and elk spirits I drew last fall and never actually posted here whoops hahaa.
"Well it's calm and clear
Collapsed here on the stone
Delivered to this place
A vision dark and cloaked
And those figures through the leaves
And that light through the smoke
And those countless empty days
made me dizzy when I woke"
-Sleeping Ute, Grizzly Bear
