Oliver Jackson-Cohen in THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANORย โThe Two Faces: Part Oneโ
We are starting up on a serious note, buckle your seatbelts. As Joanne has stated on various occasions (etc. here) she wrote Remusโ lycanthropy intending for it to be an overarching HIV- and AIDS metaphor. In that light a few very serious questions can be raised. Representing a stigmatized illness in a highly sympathetic character? Awesome. There are however two key-issues here. One being Joanne once again proving herself to be homophobic by one) writing Remus as straight 2) writing Remus as ashamed and 3) not acknowledging the fact that what she is really insinuating is that Remus was raped by Greyback at eight years old. If she really wanted to shed a positive, informative light on people with sexually/blood-transmitted diseases she should not have done so by associating it with child rape. She should not have Remus nearly neglecting his family because heโs afraid that the disease has been carried onto his son which only further stigmatizes the disease. She literally wanted Remus to suffer as much as possible despite claiming that heโs one of her favorite characters in the whole series. What she could have done was write Remus as a proud (gay or bisexual) man; not a man who was ashamed of himself and not a man who was locked up in a magically-sealed house every full moon and told by his elders to hide his dangerous lycanthropy.ย
