A main difference I've noticed in the way they tell Hürrem's story vs Ibrahim's story, and why Hürrem outlasted him

is that Ibrahim's backstory is given so much more attention and dissection. We hear more about it, see it, hear his internal thoughts on it, etc. On the other hand, Hürrem's past is rarely ever touched on except for in season 1. And when it was touched on past that, her story started at the point she was enslaved.

I used to think this was bad and misgonistic writing (still do, tbh, in full context of the script and how it treats female characters), but I think, if it was a deliberate writing choice, it was a good one.

One of the biggest reason Hürrem remained in favor is because she never saw her success outside of Suleyman and what he gave her. While a good deal of her journey was rooted in trying to grow past her slavery, she kept it mostly behind closed doors except for things like charity, which was still ultimately seen as a humble deed.

Ibrahim's desire to outrun his roots was so central to his identity as "the fisherman's son", he let it grow bigger than the program.

All these are true and I want to add that Hurrem, as a woman, doesn't have the privilege of having an identity crisis the way Ibrahim does. She doesn't have the privilege of being able to have endless ruminations about her true self or about her cultural assimilation or cultural conflict. She doesn't have the privilege of fucking off to her village to see her family and contemplate. She is a woman in that society therefore she is way too busy getting pregnant, giving birth, raising those kids, and making sure they don't get slaughtered. Because of this, she remains anchored and realistic where Ibrahim gets more and more lost in his individual, personal struggle. This juxtaposition is very interesting but I get so unbelievably pissed when Ibo stans somehow interpret this as Hurrem being too basic or simple and Ibrahim being oh so rich and nuanced. Their "layers" and "nuance" are fundamentally affected by their gender.

Okay, but this is just straight up not true. It's kinda hard to map out the political stances of women in 16th century Ottoman Empire onto the post-French Revolution political landscape, but I never got the sense that Hürrem is especially conservative by the standards of that time and place. If anything, Mahidevran seems to me to be more emotionally invested in tradition than her, although not to the point that I'd call her an equivalent of a tradwife. Objectively, the most traditionalist female character in the show is Ayşe Hafsa, like how is that a question, if there was a character to be translated into the modern world as a "tradwife", it'd be her. Hatice and Şah also have some tendencies of that sort, but clearly not to the same extent.

Except, of course, there is one aspect of tradwifery none of these people would be on board with: domestic labor. Remember, these are pre-modern aristocrats using literal enslaved labor to do things that a modern tradwife-type "angel of the house" is supposed to do herself (while not talking much about it, because that would take away from the glamorous image she's supposed to project). As I've said in one of my previous posts, I imagine modern AU Osmanoglus as a wealthy family that relies on hired help and whose women are either unemployed socialites or employed in "prestigious" fields like law or academia.
