Be Thankful

This Thanksgiving, take time to remember and be thankful for what you do have. Consider those less fortunate and help in any way you can. The true spirit of Thanksgiving is everlasting, but the holiday brings attention to what we sometimes tend to forget.

Dental Tips for Overall Health

uxThe link between your dental health and overall health is significant and many people do not see or understand that your oral healthy provides the foundation for the health of your entire body. Gum disease and periodontal disease are both causes of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

By keeping your dental health in tip-top shape, you can ensure your body stays healthy as well.  A healthy mouth usually means a healthy body.  Poor dental health usually means poor overall health. Make sure you are doing your best to keep your oral health in tip-top shape! Just follow these simple rules!

At home, you can practice good oral hygiene:

Brush for two to three minutes, at least twice a day, with fluoridated toothpaste.

Floss daily to remove plaque from places your toothbrush can't reach.

Eat a healthy diet to provide the nutrients necessary (vitamins A and C, in particular) to prevent gum disease.

Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, which may contribute to gum disease and oral cancer.

Exercise preventive care and schedule regular dental checkups — the surest way to detect early signs of periodontal disease.

The Importance of Giving Back

With the holiday season upon is, many of us tend to remember what is important and desire to give back or help others in some way or form. The idea of giving back and philanthropy is great; however, it is important to always remember the importance of giving is year round and not just during the holidays.

Giving back has shown not only to be beneficial to those you are helping, but also to yourself. You feel better and have better self-esteem. Whether you apply your efforts financially or physically volunteer, helping others can help you develop as a person, learn new skills, contribute to the community and much more. It doesn’t matter how big or small you give, anything helps those in need. This season and always, remember the importance of giving back. “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted” (Aesop)

Halloween Safety Tips for Trick or Treating

Halloween is a fun time of the year, especially for young children as they get to go door - to- door collecting candy. If you have children trick-or-treating this year, be sure to put safety first and keep a few things in mind:

Don’t let kids go by themselves- Go with them or assign a buddy system if going in a group. If they have older siblings, they can accompany them as well.

Set rules- Assign a return time, especially if you are not chaperoning them

Plan your route- Know which area and houses will be visited

Take a picture- Of course you want to document your child’s costume, but also try to get a photo that clearly shows your child’s face, in case anyone gets lost

Don’t enter any homes- If you are going to any homes you do not know, be particularly cautious not to go inside

Make a plan for older kids as well

Dental Tips for Healthier and Whiter Teeth

All of us desire to have a beautiful, whiter smile and there are many treatments available to help you achieve your best smile. However, you can take some simple steps to keep your teeth healthy and attain the white smile you desire by the choices you make every day. Follow the tips below and notice the difference in just as little as a week!

Follow a ‘White-Teeth’ diet- This means getting rid of the teeth-staining foods and drinks you consume such as red wine and black tea. Darker foods cause staining to your teeth. This also means cutting out cigarettes and cigars. If you do choose to consume these foods, brush immediately afterward!

Change your toothbrush- At least every 2-3 months, change your brush head or get a new toothbrush! Bacteria begins to transfer into your mouth when using an old toothbrush!

Incorporate ‘Detergent’ foods into your diet- Detergent foods are those that are firm or crisp such as carrots, popcorn, apples, and celery. When you eat them they clean your teeth; which is great because many of us do not brush after every meal!

Here’s one for the ladies- Did you know coral or light red lipstick can help your teeth appear whiter? Lighter colored lipsticks bring out yellowness in the teeth.

Use apple cider vinegar to gargle- You may be surprised but gargling in the morning with it and then brushing will help remove stains, whiten your teeth and kill bacteria in your mouth! Win-Win-Win!

Success takes time, perseverance and dedication. If you have ever tried anything new, you have thought at one point or another that you could fail. It can be a daunting task to try something new, but do not let that deter you from achieving your goals. Many people look at people who have achieved great success and do not know they too have overcome failures and worked hard to be where they are today.

Some famous failures include Albert Einstein, Michael Jordan, and Walt Disney. Teachers told Einstein he wouldn’t amount to much because he could not speak until he was around 4 years old. Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and Disney was fired from a newspaper for a lack of imagination! Could you imagine what our world would be like today if they didn’t move forward?

Whatever your dreams and goals, keep pursuing them. Hard work and determination pays off! There will always be a few bumps in the road, but if you keep moving forward you will get there!

Tips to Help Kids Overcome Fear of the Dentist

It’s never too early to promote healthy oral habits within your children, but many children develop a fear of the dentist. From their view point, a dental visit can be a scary time in an unfamiliar room filled with a variety of different noises and unusual instruments. You can help ease your child’s fears and make them feel more comfortable and relaxed during each dental visit by utilizing these tips before each visit:  

Start Young- It is recommended to start dental visits as early as age 1 or when the first tooth is visible. This will allow your child to become more accustomed to the dental office.

Keep things simple- Too many details, especially regarding the first visit, can cause unnecessary anxiety.

Choose your words carefully- Use positive phrases with your children, such as “The dentist is going to check your smile and count your teeth.”

Consider a pretend visit- Grab a toothbrush and play pretend. It will provide your child of a better idea of how the visit will go.

Marshfield Fair 2013

Did you know the Marshfield Fair is going on right now through August 25th? The Marshfield Fair has a vast history and began many, many years ago. It has continued to grow throughout the years. The schedule changes every day but ongoing daily features include the Colonial House and Garden Exhibit, the Magic Theater State, Frontier Land and the Arts Center. Upcoming events include Children’s Day, Fantastic Fridays, and the North River Blues Festival.

Steve Jobs- A True Innovator

Without a doubt, Steve Jobs is one of the most influential individuals of our time. His contributions to technology are extraordinary. I wanted to share this amazing story about Steve regarding the development of the iPod. Also, be sure to check out his story in the new movie Jobs.

When engineers were working on the very first iPod completed the prototype, they presented their work to Steve Jobs for his approval. Jobs played with the device, scrutinized it, weighed it in his hands, and promptly rejected it. It was too big.

The engineers explained that they had to reinvent inventing to create the iPod and that it was simply impossible to make it any smaller. Jobs was quiet for a moment. Finally he stood, walked over to an aquarium, and dropped the iPod in the tank. After it touched bottom, bubbles floated to the top.
