Eren, Tragic Hero
Eren wasn’t as intimate with Hange as with his 104th comrades, but they still had a close working relationship. Sasha, Shadis, and now Hange…more and more people with whom Eren fought side by side are dying because of his efforts to protect them. Floch, too, was someone he drew into all this, though they weren’t themselves close.
This must have been what Hange meant when they said that Eren’s solution would save no-one.
Live by the sword, lose by the sword, I suppose. Saving people against their will can only make things worse for them. To borrow a line from another anime, people can only save themselves.
Eren’s fear of losing the people he loves makes him bring that outcome about himself. He fulfils that dreadful prophecy in his attempts to render it impossible. This is the very stuff of tragic irony, every inch as powerful now as it was over 2,000 years ago in the Ancient Greek amphitheatre.
It was actually a mistranslation by translation team for Hange's part.
