Lyman Ward Military Academy is a non-denominational military school grades 6th-12th, unique among the more than 31,000 secondary schools in the United States in that there are only 13 boys boarding military schools.

Today was a special treat for Mrs. Saffold’s 6th & 7th Grade History class as they got to meet one of Alex City’s legends, Mr. Cecil “Sausage” Bryant. Mr. Bryant is 102 years old and a WWII Veteran. Not only did my boys get to shake hands with an amazing man, but they also got to hear stories from his military days. It’s not every day that you get to meet a man who is over 100 years old, so these boys were given a great opportunity that I hope will stay with them throughout the years. This visit was just as much a treat for Mr. Bryant as it was for us.

Mrs. Saffold’s Class made Galaxies in Jars in Science Class today!

Even though the employees and managers at Wendy’s weren’t expecting a party of 18, they were all rockstars! We got our food in about the same amount of time as everyone else with single orders.

Mrs Saffold’s Science class painted Solar System touch lights today. We have all 9 planets including Pluto as well as the Sun. **Yes, I know that Pluto is a dwarf planet, but when you have 10 cadets, you make it work. 😊

Mr. Ogletree obtained special permission to allow LWMA cadets inside the observation tower where they were shown the workings of a massive telescope. The cadets could not stop talking about Columbus University STEM program as they enjoyed a lunch at Wendy's. Mr. Ogletree reminded the students how blessed they were to have President Norrell and Dean Reynolds as supporters of their STEM class by allowing such educational trips.

We checked out the simulators, asked questions about different displays, and saw the products of the 3-D Printer. Very cool. We also watched a light show where it showed the Milky Way Galaxy, different constellations, and super Volcanoes.

Mrs. Giddens’s birds, Romeo and Juliet, were socializing with her drama students today.

STEM Director, Chief JC Ogletree, introduced potential cadets to the new drone aviation class starting in January 2018 by allowing them to see DJI Phantom Drone in action. The class will allow 8 to 12 privileged cadets the opportunity to receive their FAA commercial drone license. Classes will be taught on campus with the federal test taken at Auburn University Aviation testing site.

LWMA STEM Director JC Ogletree’s Robotic Team takes home 4 trophies Friday from local competition. Three-man team Cadet Reese, Rogers, and Bosworth, takes 1st in robot skills over the course dominating the competition. Cadet Graham takes 1st in Design Award in the individual challenge with the robot built to spec and detail. Three-man team Cadet Vankirk, Gatoux, and Norrell take 1st in Tournament Champion and 2nd in Judges Award with respect to the programming of robot to perform task on its own.

Mrs. Saffold’s Science Class enjoyed making DNA models using Twizzlers, toothpicks, and marshmallows. Smoky just enjoyed exploring the classroom.
