Topics Project Artist Statement

It took me a while to decide what I wanted to do for the topics piece. I had a few ideas- but the polar bear was my first, and my favorite. I knew that I wanted to do something with global warming, because it's an issue that's important to me.

Once I knew what issue I wanted to do, I had to narrow it down to one specific idea. It took me a while to find a way to make the statement I wanted while fitting the requirements of the assignment (being made out of a material that is related to the topic). I tried to find a way to incorporate water into te piece- and it took a while to come up with the idea to make a mold which would then be filled with water and frozen into ice.

This piece has taken me almost all of fourth quarter, and it is a piece that I am really proud of. I think the statement that I'm trying to make is clear, which I'm very pleased with.

Foam Project Artist Statement

For the foam project, I really wanted to create an animal. I definetly wanted to do a household animal. Originally, I wanted to do a dog lying down, but as I was creating the dog, my plans changed. I decided to make the dog just sitting on his legs, because it worked better with the material. 

The most challenging part of this project was making the details for the face. The material was frustrating enough on it's on, and trying to make small details out of it was difficult. I ended up making the face less detailed than I originally planned.

Snow Sculpture Artist Statement

Our project came from an idea that Jerry had. He wanted to create swimmer, whose torso would look like it was coming out of the ground. I thought that his idea was great- it would work well with our assigned material, and it would fit the time constraints. The piece was about flow, which was something else that I really liked. It was challenging to work with the snow in short spurts of time over a period of about a week. We had to plan well. We also had to lookout for weather, which was a challenge. We managed to overcome these by working quickly and really thinking hard about our plan and not deviating too much from it. I think that the whole piece was successful. We managed to make the piece be easily identifiable. The viewers mostly did not look at the piece for more than a minute, and most seemed to understand what we had created. For inspiration, I looked at a lot of ice and snow sculptures, and found a bunch that were so big in scale and detailed, and I thought they were really interesting and grabbed the viewer’s attention, but many were also easily identifiable. While Jerry and I didn’t make a huge structure, we did create something that one would quickly register as a human.

Tinfoil Artist Statement

We thought of making the tree branch out of tinfoil by looking out of the window. We wanted to make something simple enough, but also with enough possibility for detail. It was difficult figuring out a way to display the branch- we needed something sturdy enough to hold it up, but not so sturdy and solid that it became intrusive. The wire was the perfect solution, it is very hidden, but is strong enough to hold the project to the wall. The branch connected to the theme of what sculpture means to me, because it is 3D, which was my only real condition. I looked at a lot of art that was found in airports for information. I never really looked at the sculptures in airports when traveling around, but after doing some research, many of my favorites were found there. I thought that they definitely met my conditions for what it is to be a sculpture, and were also quirky and funny.

Definition of Sculpture

Sculpture is using different materials to create some sort of three dimensional structure. A sculpture can be any size, but there must be some 3D aspect.
