She was focused. She had been focused for days, barely leaving her lab for anything. Hardly ate and hadn't slept in Notch knew how long.
Magnus hated when she got like this. She'd get so wrapped up in projects that she'd completely neglect herself. Sure, he always made jokes about being glad she was in seclusion, but internally he was stressing about her.
Of course, the other members didn't seem to be too worried. This was an Ellegaard thing, they said, she did it all the time. If too many days went by without seeing her, Gabriel would break in to check on her.
As much as Magnus loved busting down doors, he knew other, sadly less destructive methods of getting into her space. He used them a lot more frequently than anyone else knew and some even Ellegaard herself didn't know about.
Like right now, he was currently hauling himself in through the one faulty window she had yet to fix. He could see her at the desk, bent over Notch knew what, her head snapping up when she heard him hit the floor with a grunt. "Magnus, we've talked about this. I'm not to be disturbed."
He stood up. "What day is it?"
"Beg your pardon?"
"The date, Ellegaard. Do you know it?"
She pursed her lips. "April 7th."
"Wrong. It's the 8th," he crossed his arms, looking at the bags under her eyes. "When did you last sleep?"
She turned back to the strange contraption on her desk. "Look, I appreciate your concern, and I have been sleeping. Everything's going well."
"Ellie, we have barely seen you at all in three days."
"I'm sure you're enjoying causing destruction without me to stop you."
"Yeah, well it gets boring without you around to mess up my plans," he sighed. "Come out, Ellie. Get some food, have a nap. And I mean real food, not whatever army-style crap you have stored in here."
"Coming from you."
"Ellegaard."
She looked over at him again. "I'm so close to a breakthrough, Magnus."
"You say that every time. And I'll come back in a few hours to find you passed out on your desk. Argue with me, I dare you."
She opened her mouth then closed it again, eyebrows furrowing together. Her arms crossed then uncrossed before she sighed. "I'm surprised you care so much."
"Of course I care. It's you, Ellie. We may be different as night and day, but what's the moon without the sun?"
Pleasant surprise flashed across her fingers. "Now where did you learn that poetic bit?"
"Dunno. Been hanging around you too much, most likely," he walked over to her, hugging her from behind and resting his chin are her shoulder. "So. What are you working on?"
"You want to know?"
"Hell, why not. Surely you'll bore me to sleep and then you'll actually take the hint."
Her brown eyes rolled but she obliged him, explaining the contraption she was working on. She'd twist to look at his face every so often, see just how awake he was, and found him completely enthralled. She knew he understood maybe up to half of what she was saying and yet...the look on his face showed complete interest. It threw her off a bit but it was...nice.
She kept going, eventually setting down her inventions and working on other tangents. And Magnus continued to listen to her, gently tugging her to a chair until they were both seated, her on his lap. He'd offer some sort of ridiculous input, causing her to roll her eyes, but smile nonetheless.
She didn't know when she had fallen asleep. Only that she woke up with curled against Magnus, her head on his chest. His breathing was even and slow, one arm around her while the other dangled over the side of the chair. She carefully lifted her head, looking at how his mouth hung slightly open and the fuzz that covered his jaw.
She smiled and lay her head back down, watching the sun start to stream in through the windows of her lab. A square of light perfectly illuminated her desk, inviting her to go and continue her work, but...she didn't want to. At least, not yet. Magnus was warm and she couldn't remember the last time she had felt so relaxed.
He shifted in his sleep, hand sliding down her back and a quiet snort escaped him before he shifted. He luckily didn't wake and after a moment longer, Ellegaard pressed a kiss to his cheek and went back to sleep.
