“Pictures never do any creature justice.” Marissa agreed, her bright smile never wavering. “Like, you can find some great pictures of the Antipodean Opaleye, but I don’t think anything could ever really compare to seeing their glimmering scales and eyes in person. They’re such elegant dragons.”
She let out a dreamy sigh, closing her book and hugging it to her chest. “I can’t wait to see some of them in person. Dragons, and other creatures. More than I get to see at Hogwarts. When I graduate, I could study dragons, or be a magical vet, or anything. I mean, I guess I do have to choose, but still … my parents think I’m absolutely mad.”
She sighed again, softer and sadder this time. Her parents were Muggles, and they weren’t very fond of the idea of their only daughter getting anywhere near strange magical creatures. That was one of the reasons she enjoyed talking to Lysander so much. His whole family was wild about animals - he wouldn’t call her crazy for loving them.
Lysander nodded in agreement “Even though the pictures move so it’s like a short clip it’s still nowhere near the same as seeing their beauty in person, and they get such a bad rep it’s a shame. As long as you don’t piss them off and treat them with respect they won’t hurt you.” he said with a shake of his head. Sure he had gotten more than a few burns from dragons but every single time was his own fault, the ones he had come face to face with always gave some sort of warning to leave before spitting fire, he just hadn’t picked up on them.
He nodded slightly as he listened, he had the same ambitions in terms of career path, well sort of. He didn’t have a specific creature he wanted to be around, he couldn’t pick even if he tried. “Well your parents are muggles so I can imagine things like dragons are terrifying to them, they grew up hearing stories about evil dragons capturing the princess and all that. Not their fault they were given the wrong idea,” he said with a shrug. “I mean, even most withes and wizards are weary of them and it’s all just born out of ignorance, really.”
Lysander noticed the sad look on her face and frowned slightly “Hey, don’t let it bug you, okay? If they don’t think it’s safe prove to them how it is. I can find over a dozen written positive encounters with dragons, sure they aren’t fuzzy cuddly pets but the reputation they have is completely unfair, almost everyone who’s been around them will tell you that.”
