Kirkens Korshær garden
Community gardens are springing up all over Copenhagen and it has been great to visit some of the “new” and not so well known gardens. The video above shows the Kirkens Korshær garden which started in April this year. It is a very well kept, beautiful and colourful gardens made up of a mix of flowers, herbs and vegetables. Kirkens Korshær houses homeless people in Copenhagen and provides a safe haven to individuals who are struggling with addiction among other things. These picture were taken during the 2nd visit of Hedemarken garden in Albertslund. We had language barrier as a challange to communictae with the users of the garden so we had to get help from one of the Danish speaking collegue from Metropol. And it was summer vacation so it was hard to get people who can help us with Danish interviews as almost all of the students went for summer vacation. But we were lucky we found Simon who helped us with the interviews and transcription.

Field to Green thumbs garden
During the last week of August we visited the community garden named “Green Thumbs” located in Wordkultur centere near Elmegade.This garden was started in collaboration with World culture centre, Verdenskultur center and Copenhagen community garden which is now called Green thumbs. This garden was started with an aim so that people coming to Denmark can find a new way to integrate with others, meet and socialize among them.
The most interesting thing about this garden is that the users are mostly international students and they are doing creative works in the garden. Among all other garden we visited, this was the first garden to have self-watering system in the boxes (raised beds). And the amazing thing was these were made by the users by putting thermocline, used plastic bottles. This shows the environment friendly aspects of the garden and the way the users are involved in the garden. And the other thing we saw was Vertical gardening being started in this garden which was not seen in other garden but except aquaponics garden. Vertical gardening looks beautiful so this was the idea behind encouraging vertical gardening in this garden highlights the garden leader. This picture down shows the beans grown in vertical way in the garden.
During the visit, we came to know that kommune is funding for the plants grown in this garden which are mostly edible plants. It was really nice to see different varieties of vegetables and plants being grown. Even some of the Asian herbs were grown in the garden which shows the good way of integretion among the people. We had an interview with the garden contact person. During the interview, we came to know the future ideas of the garden and what plants they want to plant in the garden and also the ideas about increasing the involvement of vulnerable groups in the garden.

Mostly the raised beds are full of herbs and vegetables in this garden so the garden leader also mentions to increase the attractiveness of the garden by planting some colourful flowers and also mentioned that they are planning to grow the herbs from which beer can be produced and is wild plant in Denmark.
The garden is flexible for everyone one to come and work on any time and take the veggies home. The garden leader also mention that people are more consuming the products from the garden.
Well we were extremely surprised to see mini UK in Copenhagen :P :).

Urban spaces summer course 2016
During our internship, we got an opportunity to be the part of the Phd summer course. It was amazing experience to become part of it and to get to listen the research projects of different professionals from different parts of the world.
During the course we got chance to visit the Syudhavn community and few other places in Copenhagen. During our visit I came to see different gardens which was beautiful in their own way.
We were so amazed to see the boxes of TagTomat in front of the building of Cultural centre in Syudhavn. As in my earlier post I have mentioned about TagTomat (see in the specific caption of the picture ) which we saw in Kirkens Korshær garden.
I did heard about the acquaponics garden in copenhagen from my supervisor but wasnot able to visit. As a field trip of this course we were taken to this aquaponics garden.

Vertical gardening
It was great opportunity to visit there and see vertical gardening in the acqaponics garden which was our first time seeing this concept being implemented in Copenhagen. We had an amazing vegan dinner in the same garden. This course was a great opportunity for me to learn the better utilisation of urban spaces for promoting better health through community action.
Kirkens Korshær garden
Besides being in small place, this is one of the beautiful garden in Copenhagen. The garden leader here in this garden tried to involve everyone from setting the garden til selecting and planting, hence the users are the one who are responsible in taking care of the garden.This garden is helping these homeless people to integreate among others from the shelter. Hence this garden can be an inspiration for the future projects.

Experiences & Lesson learnt
It has been an amazing internship so far. To be frank I wasn’t expecting internship in community garden would be this fun :P. As I heard from previous students who did their internship on community gardens it wasn’t that fun.
Being in Copenhagen for almost 3 year and yet exploring neighbourhood has been amazing and fun. And the funniest part was being lost within the place finding the gardens. Not only these but also good part is having field work every week and got to meet people from different background, culture and profession has had enhance my intercultural competencies and has also led to a personal growth in me.
Sharing your experiences and getting feedback is always good way to learn. This is one of important lesson learnt during this internship. During the documentation of literature review we made mistakes and created an extra work for ourselves and we came to know that one of our classmates who is doing similar research did the same mistake. We could have prevented this mistake if we would have consulted with her. Hence, I would suggest everyone to share your experiences and learn from your colleague or other people. And the other thing which I learnt was, doing an internship with colleague is always a good idea. Hence, I would recommend doing an internship with a partner if that possible. It’s always great to get help and learn from the partner when you get stuck. And also the other thing, I realized that timely documenting the different interview and timely analyses prevents you from losing the track from your work.
Hence, I feel that every day is a new day, bringing new challenges and opportunities to get new knowledge and skills, to enrich my experience, and learn a new process, task, activity, or to meet new people.

Dear Abina, great to read about your more personal and practical experiences during the internship. I really like your Photos and insights. In upcoming blogs it would be nice to have a few more captions/explanations about where the Photos are from. I think it is both interesting for me but also for others to know how many and what gardens you are looking into :-)

Video making
Few weeks ago our supervisor Pernille Malberg Dyg and one of the students from Metropol; Marek Von Danzig came with the super idea about video making. So, the main moto behind making this video was to promote the community garden projects. As it is summer and the weather has been good so far, so we had to wait long for an appointment with the garden leaders. Finally after a long wait, on last week of July we managed to execute our idea about video making. Here in this video you can see Marek using Drone camera for the clips. We had lots of fun working with Marek.

Weather Vs Field Visits
Time flies!! It had been a long time since I have posted about my internship diaries. Well I must say, it has been an amazing internship so far.
Me and my colleague Jacqueline we were quite busy in our field works. Sometime it was really hard to find the location of the community gardens. But at end of the day we managed to find different gardens around Copenhagen. Beside that another obstacle we faced during our field work was the “weather”. At the beginning of our internship we were blessed with good weather. But as the time passed the weather started to get worse. Some of the garden we went was in the city and others were a bit far from the city. And to get there we had to pass through the jungle :).
And the funniest thing is whenever we got an appointment to go and conduct an interview then it starts to rain on that particular day. As here in this picture you can see the glimpse of forest and me carrying umbrella :).

Beside the bad weather and the jungle way, it was really a good experience for us to get there and interview the garden leader and get to hear about her experiences and get to learn so much new information about the community gardens.
My first Impression from 1st two weeks
My internship started on 31st of May and on the first day I met my beautiful Colleague, Jacqueline; with whom I am doing my internship. We met up at school where we met our supervisor (both internship and college) Pernille and also project leader. We began by agreeing on a schedule with Pernille. After acquiring idea from our supervisor, we started to seek the existing community gardens in Denmark especially in Copenhagen. We got some of the gardens contact from our supervisor and other we mapped out and made preliminary contacts. As we started our internship, first two weeks we were blessed with beautiful weather :). We visited some of the gardens meet different people and got to learn about garden and also we got to learn new things. Going out, exploring new things in great weather was a good experience. Here are some of the pictures from our first visit.
This is Verdenshaven, a multicultural urban garden in Norrebro and we were lucky enough to get those yummy muffins made from same garden products.
And this one is from Trampoline house. You might be wondering why they have few plants in this garden, its because community garden is starting project on Trampoline house.
From 2nd week onwards we started to make interview guide for different garden contact persons and users. Frequent meetings, discussions and feedbacks from our supervisor helped us to improvise our guides and motivate us to engage further in our work. Then after we managed to work on guides, we started to focus on systematic literature review.
Conducting systematic literature review
While conducting these literatures review, I came across a lot of new information regarding the benefits of community garden among different age groups around different parts of the world. Hardly had we conducted systematic review during our previous semesters but this internship is helping me to expand my knowledge on literature review. Hence to sum up, I must say these past two weeks in particular has been a stressful yet interesting week.

I am Abina and I will be doing my internship with Jacqueline Ndlovu (on right). We are student at Metropolitan University College and we are specialized to Public Health Nutrition and food policy. The purpose to write this blog is to enlighten you about several activities that we will be doing during our II Internship. We have the privilege to have our II Internship with Pernille, at Metropolitian University College, Denmark. It is ongoing project in the research phase on Community gardening and group at risks.
