✭ Why shipping Johnny and Gyro is not entirely wrong
Before you come and bite me, I make myself clear: I don't make any statements. I'm guessing. I'm offering a vision. And since this is fiction, an alternative reading is inevitable. We have a canon, with Gyro and Johnny as friends. And this friendship is beautiful. But to look at it as a possible evolution into something even bigger and stronger? Even more beautiful. But the story itself wasn't about that, and I'm cool with that.
First, how does one show his love for the other:
✭ Gyro's love is pragmatic. He acts on his initial impulse to "fix" Johnny, as a doctor. He sees a broken body and applies the Zombie Horse as a remedy. Even his mentorship is a form of repair. When Johnny stubbornly clings to his despair or his selfish goals, Gyro listens but does not hear (like when Johnny tried to explain the way Valentine's D4C works, but Gyro was focused on tending his wounds); he is already calculating the next step in the physical rehabilitation.
✭ Johnny's love is existential. For Johnny, Gyro is not a mechanic for his body, but the architect of his renewed world. He admits to himself—soon, to Gyro—that Gyro is his hope. Thus, Gyro is the source of meaning itself, the sun around which Johnny's frozen planet begins to thaw. Johnny’s love is one of absolute, desperate need and reverence. He doesn't just want to be fixed; he wants to be worthy of the hope Gyro embodies. His act of saving Gyro at Sugar Mountain, trading away the invaluable Corpse Parts for wine, is the ultimate proof: he chooses the man over the miracle, the relationship over the remedy.
Second, the three core details late in the story.
✭ The iconic "Golden Rectangle" moment. This was not mere observation for Gyro; it was revelation and recognition. He, the master of the Spin, perceives the ultimate truth of his art within Johnny. Johnny is no longer just a student or a companion; he is the living vessel and proof of the perfection Gyro seeks. In that gaze, Johnny is transformed from a man into a sacred geometry, the most beautiful and perfect thing Gyro has ever witnessed. This moment of silent, awestruck perception is more intimate than any declaration of love; it is the recognition of the other's soul as one's own highest principle.
✭ The secret (Gyro's; not Johnny's ridiculous one). Gyro’s true name, "Julius Caesar Zeppeli," is a guarded treasure. Unknown even to his brothers, shared only with his father, it is the core of his private identity. By trusting it to Johnny during a moment of before the final fight, Gyro performs an act of absolute surrender. He gives Johnny the key to his sovereign self. In narrative terms, this is a bonding moment more potent than any vow; it is a sacrament of mutual belonging. Johnny becomes the sole keeper of Gyro's most intimate truth. And with his death, his soul.
✭ The temptation. Valentine’s cruel temptation to Johnny is not power or wealth, but the ultimate romantic fantasy: "I can bring back another Gyro Zeppeli from a parallel world."This offer directly attacks the core of Johnny’s love. It proposes replacing the unique, irreplaceable individual with a simulacrum. Johnny's hesitation, and his ultimate rejection of the offer, is a testament to the non-fungible singularity of his love. The Gyro he lost was not a set of characteristics, but a singular, shared history of glances, detours, and secrets. To accept a copy would be the ultimate betrayal of the real love they shared. It is a test he passes, affirming that their bond was about a specific, irreplicable soul.
Gyro's "The shortest route was a detour. It was the detour that was our shortest path"—becomes the definitive theology of their relationship. The "detour" is their time together: the fights, the jokes, the shared secrets, the silent rides. It was not an efficient path to healing or victory, but it was the only path that led to them. Their love was the detour, and it became, in the end, the only path that mattered.
It is a Baroque, intense, and tragic romance, where the greatest declaration of love is not a kiss, but throwing away god-like relics to save the other, or sacrificing one's life so the other might learn to stand and fight, forever carrying the perfect memory of the one who first taught him how.
So when we ship them both, we're actually pretty normal about it. And just maybe dramatic and kinda masochistic to our fragile selves. Like when I barely reach the Ball Breaker arc while rereading the manga, I start crying. All the way. A lot. And I stop it when Johnny fights alt. Diego.
This AO3 skin was inspired by antique books featuring elegant gold foil stamping.
Truth be told, I am not entirely satisfied with the day mode. It might not be as comfortable for extended reading as some of my past designs. However, I am absolutely in love with this purple and background color combination—it evokes the feeling of writing and sketching with purple ink on old parchment. The purple foiled motifs also carry a slightly mottled texture, as if gently faded by the passage of time. Perhaps I will update the palette if I discover a better match one day?
I actually began with the night mode and tested several color schemes. I attempted a red, gold, and black palette, but it was a miss. During the process, the contrast felt far too glaring, and the black background was suffocatingly heavy. This purple and gold, on the other hand, reminds me of the beautiful gowns of noble girls in classical oil paintings. I am truly delighted with how it finally came together.
⚙️ Quick Installation Guide
The installation process is almost identical to the famous "🌹 𝕸𝖎𝖉𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝕭𝖑𝖔𝖔𝖒 🌹" skin, but with just one extra step: the base file.
You will need to create 4 skins in total. First, create the base, the Day skin (Violet Parchment with light mode checked), and the Night skin (Gilded Velvet with dark mode checked). Finally, when creating your Master Auto-Switch Skin, add them as Parent Skins in this exact order:
Faded Gilt - base
Faded Gilt - Violet Parchment
Faded Gilt - Gilded Velvet
