Gratitude of a Stranger

Thank you to the aunty who smiled warmly down at me when I clung to your leg instead of my mom's. Even as I near 30, and memories flicker, I remember your kind and amused eyes.

Thank you to the children who called me to play when I had spent a year without a friend. I had learned to be alone and thought I was content, but those outstretched hands where a lifeline.

Thank you to the passenger sat next me on the plane, who helped someone alone and over their head. You gave me advice and guided me in the airport so that I could stay as calm as I was pretending to be.

Thank you to the man who invited me in for a tea when I burst into tears as he answered the door. I was cold-calling and had been shouted at, but your gesture brought me clarity and warmth.

Thank you to my colleague who, despite my protests, pushed a £5 note into my hand that was left as a tip. I was exhausted and slowed you down, but showing me kindness was worth more.

Thank you to the woman who sat with me in the cold when I had my first ever car accident. You pulled over without a second thought and helped to sooth my shock and shame.

Thank you to all the strangers who reached out to me, another stranger, when I needed it most. I'll pay it forward, as you may have been, and go through life with gratitude to you.
