So I´m currently reading EoS...
…and has anyone realized that Fenrys is like a mix of Rhys and Cas? He is serving a bitch-queen in her bed just like Rhys did to protect the people he loves and his personality is very much like Cassian´s. And not to forget he is handsome af and a precious little male!
This is it. This is what killed me.
2018 is going to fuck some shit up in this fandom when the finale to Throne of Glass comes out.
Views on Helion’s race
So, as of late I’ve been seeing more and more discourse centered around this beautiful baby. And I wanted to jump in, because we all know I love talking about race.
As a black woman, I always saw Helion as black. He was described as dark skinned, and when one uses those words, they are to be interpreted as black. I dont know how that is in other communities, but in my opinion (traditionally, commonly, usually) it means black. In every reference that I can think of, whenever you see ‘dark skinned’ it’s used to describe a black person. Therefore, many people are to interpret that Helion is black. I have NEVER heard dark skinned used to describe a brown person. Thats why you say, brown skinned. They are two different things, but I really dont expect people outside of those communities to know that (even tho you fucking should). SJM should make herself more clear so shit like this doesnt happen.
If we look into the culture that the Day Court is seen to be representing, it would be Egypt. Commonly, when you think of Egypt, you dont think of black people. However, in Egyptian times, there were many cultures and races mixed in. Not only that, but Upper Egypt, and Lower Egypt, were similar yes, but also very different. Lower Egypt has darker skinned people, aka, the Nubians. They were in fact, Egyptian Pharaohs. Therefore, if we are to take SJM by her vague description of the Day Court, it can be either more arabian features assigned to Helion, or Sudanese (for Nubia - Lower Egypt - is present day Sudan).
(Lower Egypt, Nubian Pharaoh, and serious hottie, Taharqa)
(Upper Egypt, King Tut - apparently he didnt look like this, but you see the sculptural differences)
(Lower Egypt, Nubia)
(Upper Egyptian, Thebes)
That makes Helion EXTREMELY tricky to pinpoint. As he was described, being Dark skinned, I assign him with being Nubian. But knowing the background of egypt, I cant seriously say that he is not arabic. So, bringing @charliebowater into this, i cant say that shes wrong. She did her job. As an artist, I understand that she went with what her client (SJM) asked for. It doesnt make Charlie wrong. And it doenst make SJM wrong (In THIS situation. Others are debatable. I can go into many other things but I wont).
One thing that is ABSOLUTELY NOT OKAY, is to WHITE WASH, Helion. Drawing him with white features, as MANY OF YOU ARTISTS ON THIS PLATFORM HAVE DONE, IS NOT OKAY. I DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE CHARACTER. THIS CHARACTER IS /CLEARLY/ A PERSON OF COLOR AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. DARKENING THE SKIN OF YOUR PAINTING OR DRAWING, TO SUIT THE CHARACTER, IS NOT MAKING HIM A PERSON OF COLOR. THATS ERASURE AND YOU TRYING TO COVER YOUR ASS. Not to fucking mention it makes them look ashy as fuck so just dont.
Now, if some of yall know, Im pretty outspoken in this fandom. Many of yall came after my ass because I said Rhys isnt fucking white (because hes not, and I’m not discussing that further, yall give me a headache). I am VERY hard when it comes to race in SJM’s work. But this I cant in good conscience say is completely wrong. The Egyptians were broad and nothing was canonically confirmed. Unfortunately.
I will continue to say Helion is black. But you’re not wrong calling him brown. Just fucking show him as actually being brown or black, and for gods sake stop darkening skin on your white boys to make them a poc character. It looks stupid.
Manon Blackbeak and Abraxos and finally you can find most of my art including this one on my society6 page https://society6.com/niruart723
Hey! So I had a question regarding the Throne of Glass series. I really want to read it but I'm afraid I'm too young. Which age would you recommend the series for? (I searched everywhere but I can't seem to get an exact answer. I was wondering if you could help me?) Thanks!
I think 13 is a good age to read it. There is a good deal of violence (it's about an assassin, so that's a given), but there are also sex scenes. These don't show until the later books, but it is something important to consider. Everyone is different. I know someone that read all the books when they were 12, so it's really up to how mature you think you are and whether you think you can handle the violence and smut. I started the series at 13 and have not had any problems in regards to such content, so it's up to you. If you start reading it and it makes you uncomfortable, then just put it on the shelf for another time. There's no need to rush into a series, especially when it's not even finished yet. (Hope this helps!!)
Dear Sarah J. Maas
After reading Tower of Dawn, I now need a whole book about Borte and Yeran and what went on at the Gathering games. Thank you in advance.
YES PLEASE.
Sarah J. Maas, the master of wrecking ships and OTP’s
Us: Samlaena?
Sjm: Nope.
Us: Dorlaena?
Sjm: Never.
Us: It’s gotta be Chaolena?
Sjm: Yeaaaaa-no.
Us: But what about Nesrol?
Sjm: Think again.
Us: And Moriel?
Sjm: Not even close.
Us: Feylin?
Sjm: Fucking Titanic mate.
hi, I'm just wondering why people are so against sjm and what you think about it? i've had acotar on my to read for a while but hesitating because of the mixed opinions on the author specifically
There are a lot of various reasons that people don’t like her or her books. There are some that are valid (killing of women of color to further the plot of a white person is the only one I actually agree with), and some that are not (accusations of abusive relationships are either not abusive, or are acknowledged as such and dealt with because it’s an explicit, intentional part of the narrative). Some people now don’t like the way she handled a disabled character in her most recent book, though she was obviously very deliberate in her writing of that narrative and used sensitivity readers.
Of course, some of that criticism re: disability is coming from people who haven’t read the book and refuse to read it, so I take that with less than a grain of salt, tbh.
Another issue is the way she handled a character coming out to another. But the criticism on that is super mixed. A lot of lgbtqia+ people in the fandom hated it, but a lot felt represented and identified with it, myself included. I’ve been in this fandom for almost a year now, so I’ve seen a lot of different reactions, in general.
I know that a lot of people who have experienced sexual abuse have found comfort in her books as well.
If I had known about some of those things beforehand, I might not have read her books. However, having read them, a lot of the criticism is grossly exaggerated - and this is coming from someone who is doing a fellowship in diversity and inclusivity, for what it’s worth. Most of those previously-mentioned issues are in her other series, Throne of Glass, not ACOTAR. However, I personally like ToG better.
I think it would be best if you read, and then form your own judgements. Because POC, people with disabilities, and lgbtqia+ people have had different reactions to her writing, so it’s not fair to say that across the board, she does poorly with all of these things - especially when members of the aforementioned groups do feel represented.
So really, it’s a pissing contest of who can find the most problematic material, while ignoring the voices of people who say that no, this was accurate to their experience and they appreciate it and find a lot of value in it.
TL;DR - read the books for yourself, and don’t let some rando on tumblr or wherever else decide what good content is for you.
REMEMBER
Remember when we thought Aelin was Celeana and she was just some badass assassin who just had a bad day and got thrown in prison but when she won the competition she’d just go on cool missions and that would be Throne of Glass HAHAHAHAHAHAHSHJDBCDSC same
OK WAIT
I just realized that when Tamlin got the letter from Feyre at the Night Court talking about how she left because she wanted to and she wasn’t coming back TAMLIN DIDNT KNOW SHE COULD READ OR WRITE (No excuses for Tamlins shitty ass behavior/response) BUT WHAT IF THATS WHY HE DIDNT BELIEVE THAT SHE WANTED TO BE THERE AND HE JUST THOUGHT RHYS OR SOMEONE WROTE THE LETTER NOT FEYRE. It would make so much more sense as to why he was so damn adamant that Feyre was taken against her will (other than just being the possessive asshat he is).
reblog this with your top 3 favourite s j maas characters, i’m curious
(Not in order because I CAN'T DO THAT TO MY BABISS) Rhys, Aelin, Lysandra
