main info.
the birth of macaulay marked the montgomery family unit as "complete" with her mother finally getting the girl she had always hoped for macaulay brought a wild streak of brightness into her family, bringing her own brand of chaos from the moment she could walk and always wanting to be just as unbridled as her oldest brother
when she started slowing down around the age of six it didn't take long for the family to take notice or for the doctors to figure out what was wrong -- after a series of tests it was determined that macaulay was suffering from chronic kidney disease
after various treatments and medications having no success, and with no viable matches within her family macaulay was placed on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. the wait took over two years, with macaulay spending constant time in hospitals, until she got her "new" kidney at nine years old.
she was eleven when she family moved to aurora bay, and it was the first time she'd ever gone to real school. while she excelled at the social aspects of her education, focusing on academics was always a challenge to her -- which frustrated many teachers who always insisted that she was "bright"
not wanting to dwindle her life away in any more classrooms, macaulay took off out of town quickly after highschool graduation. she first spent time selling magazines across the country, then becoming a roadie for submergence's last tour then backpacking and hostel surfing in europe, before moving on the the eagles of death metal's tour when submergence went on hiatus
after a recent relationship took a scary turn that had her boarding the first plane out of amsterdam, macaulay decided that it was time to come home and be closer to familiar faces until she decides on her next move

"Okay, so, not as confident in the baby-holding arena as I would like to be. I would not hand the baby back, but I would be asking for advice on how to make said baby like me."
"Okay, but Barbie arguably has the better soundtrack and dance routine. I spent a well weekend learning that 'Dance the Night Away' choreography from the Barbie dance party. That 'Be a Star' song is fun but it's a little elementary, no?"
Mack bites back what instinct tells him to say -- 'you not hitting me back freaks me out more than anything' -- only barely. It's a determined thought, one thrashing and dashing to be shared despite his efforts.
It wouldn't do either of then any good to say, it would just heap more stress on her at an already stressful time and any relief he felt in the interim would be waterboarded to full scale drowning later when he thought of how bad of a big brother it would make him to focus on his feelings and not her actual circumstances.
( If only he knew how to not be all out of sorts when surrounded by hospital equipment beeps and a distinctly sharp antiseptic stench that always makes him feel queasy. )
"I can't really be mad at you for that or anything when you're in this place. That's like, the law of hospitals."
It was a fundamental amendment in the constitution of hospital conduct that they were founding fathers of from the excessive time spent in them during their childhood thanks to Mac's kidneys.
"God, it's been so long since I've gotten to use the 'hospitalized' get-out-of-jail-free card," Mac attempts to jokes with a laugh that comes out mostly hollow as she takes in the obvious discomfort in his body language.
She hates that she's the cause of it -- not on purpose, but the cause nonetheless.
At his question, Mac pulls her lips into a tight line and looks down at the thin hospital blanket that lays over her lap.
(She makes a mental note to text Ziggy to ask if she can bring over her favorite fluffy, pink one.)
Her stomach twists with guilt again at the knowledge that she is the cause of distress again when so much of her brother's childhood had been colored by the dysfunction of Mac's body.
He'd been doing so well. She was proud of him. Wife, dog, house. And here she was again to act as a perpetual cloud of doom.
(Even if the doom was only her own.)
"My function is down to thirty percent," she tells him with an unsteady breath, sniffling softly as she picks at a thread on the same thing blanket.
Madison's forehead creases as she refers to Lucky as the best person in the world, because she would disagree. Although, it was his birthday, and she wasn't about to rant about her disdain for her boyfriend's bestie on his special day.
"I think the balloon arch is enough, you've done more than what was probably expected. Besides, planes with banners are overrated." If Finn didn't go all out for her birthday though, she'd be having some stern words with him, and the coroner that would be removing his body.
"Do you have a go to karaoke song?" She thought about her own for a moment. "I really like anything from Grease, although controversial, Grease 2 as well."
"Okay, I know that my emotions have been all over the place, but I cried because I squashed an ant the other day. Like how do I know the ant wasn't going home to it's ant family with ant children? I felt so bad."
"This might be a wild guess, but does your period happen to be coming? Because two weeks ago I cried while wondering if birds could remember their mothers and then, sure enough, bam, got it the very next day."

"I'm just going to say it because I think enough time has passed but honestly? Life Size is a better 'Barbie' movie than Barbie. I'm tired of pretending like it's not for the masses."

"I would say any relationship I was in with someone other than Lucky. I really lied to myself about what I needed and how other people felt about me. I didn't know what I deserved."
"Sorry, it's Macaulay. I just call her Mac," Lucky corrects, fighting a losing battle to not get on the nerves of the woman at the main reception desk, a loud click-clack of keyboard keys following. He explains that he's not family and then curses himself for being too literal, adding that he's her boyfriend and she's a patient there.
( If his chest started to feel any tighter or his heart started to pound any harder, he worries he might also end up being a patient there. )
Another brief back and forth ensues before her room number is confirmed to him.
It feels personal when the elevator doesn't respond to the call button as quickly as he needs it to causing him to abandon waiting for it and taking the stairs instead. The ascends them in twos instead of ones, following confusing hospital direction arrows until he's found her.
The relief he feels is short lived.
"Hey," He greets, voice soft as he steps into the room and brings himself to the seat at her bedside, presumably previously occupied by Keo who's words he had only half retained on the phone after he heard 'Mac' and 'hospital'.
He takes her hand in his, his thumb brushing over her knuckles gently as his eyes found hers.
Mac feels a penetrating ache of guilt that not even pain meds can manage to mask the second she sees Lucky framed in the doorway.
The look on his face and tempered panic in the way he was holding his body had been exactly the thing she'd been trying to avoid the most.
With the best of intentions, it seemed Keo had gone over her head and told him.
"How did the party go?" she questions as he approaches the bed, trying her best to force a smile and hope that they'd managed to make it through most of the festivities before he'd found out.
More than anything, she didn't want Theo's day to be colored with anything but the brightest vibrance.
Her sheepish smile falters as he sits next to her, letting out a long breath and swallowing back the urge to let her eyes water.
She hated that she was doing this to him.
"I had a really hard time getting out of bed this morning," she slowly explains, picking her words carefully so that she didn't cause any deeper worries on the outset.
"And when I finally did I ended up almost passing out in the kitchen, so when I could get to my phone I called Keo and he brought me in. I didn't want to take you away from the party..."
She swallows hard again, giving his hand a squeeze.
"They're running tests. But, um..." she makes a soft 'whew' of breath and blinks up at the ceiling before looking at him again.
