At this point, Ichigo's resigned himself to whatever fucking shenanigans are going on whether he liked it or not. That didn't mean he'd drop everything at once.

"Or at least let my sister's know," he did not need Yuzu and Karin going ballistic if he went missing.

His worries could be understood, probably; by any guy who wasn't a full-time Shinigami. The same went for Kuchiki, Renji and especially Hitsugaya-Taichou -- all of which were plausible candidates to get the guy to come. The former two in particular, due to personal closeness; but with both occupied, it was up for him.

"Look, I dunno myself!" Ikkaku lashed out, visibly impatient; "There's no time for any of that! Don't you think it's weird they sent someone specifically to call you over? Instead of using that badge of yours!?"

Translation: something out of place was happening. Something that required an escort in particular. "Hurry up and turn Shinigami. Soutaichou's got a word with you." Ikkaku was no escort. The mission entrusted to him was an annoying one for him, too. But, duty is duty. And when the Captain Commander's involved -- there's no arguing, even if he wanted to.

"What d'ya take me for? A simpleton??" He knew the answer to that. But instead of letting the half-pint talk back, Ikkaku chose to show off. The juice box in his hand was confidently stabbed through with the thin, white plastic straw that once, was attached to it. Like the art form that is alchemy; what was once whole, has been separated - only to once again unite, in a whole different shape. Reveling in his success, the bald man proudly held his head high, handing the juice box to the other - now holed and drinkable.

"I'll let you have this," Ikkaku smirked. He never would have thought of the solution himself, clearly.

Ichigo felt his eye twitch slightly, looking at the other man. His arms folded against his chest, teeth gritting slightly. The irritation ran through his blood trying to keep himself calm.

"Do I want to know what's going on or should I just assume I'm getting dragged into shit?"

As he could probably expect -- whatever mannerisms Strawberry there let on didn't move Ikkaku in the slightest bit. Instead, he simply stood there; basking in his level's superiority over the guy, looking down at him.

"I don't care whether ya ask or not. You're coming with." Enough said.

一生懸命 (is-shō-ken-mei) "to do something to the utmost of one's ability"

一生懸命 (is-shou-ken-mei) is usually translated as something like “with utmost effort”.

The kanji are:

一 = one

生 = life

懸 = depends (amongst other meanings...)

命 = fate

A more literal translation might be: “doing something as if your life depends on it”.

Fun fact, 一生懸命 is actually a 四字熟語 (yo-ji-juku-go), or 4-character idiom!

This is a special kind of idiomatic phrase, made of 4 kanji as the name suggests.

There are thousands of these in Japanese and they often contain a small life lesson or moral message, similar to English sayings such as “you reap what you sow” and “the early bird gets the worm”.

However 一生懸命 (is-shou-ken-mei) is so common in daily conversation that it’s presented in Japanese language textbooks as just a normal adjective. I'd been studying Japanese for ages by the time I realised that it was actually a 四字熟語 4-character idiom.
