For a presentation project in high school, the “class clown” give his presentation on how to stalk women on the street. During the demonstration he roped in “volunteers” (his female friends who didn’t know it was coming and probably didn’t want to look like the asshole for refusing) to try to get away from him in a pretend city, pausing to explain the techniques to corner or tail them. The teacher let this go on for the full 20 minutes and laughed along awkwardly. Most of the class was in uproarious laughter the entire time.

Anyway that’s memory #93578 in the ongoing series of disgusting unchecked misogynistic events from my childhood that I forgot about until just now

I just sat there staring daggers at him. I wish I had disrupted the presentation to ask the teacher why she was allowing it to continue, but that’s the sort of assertiveness that most of us lack until we get older, I guess.

Terrorizing women is funny.

It is normal for men to share tips with each other on how to best victimize women.

#I had a guy in English once stand up to present our argument that I wrote about why everyone should learn to cook #and started ranting about how women need to get back in the kitchen while I sat there in shock #the boys all thought it was hilarious and the teacher who once quoted the Julia Gillard speech just told him to stop being silly #I think we all wish we had said something in the moment but it’s hard knowing no matter what you could have said no one would have #really listened

Having an abortion is no longer a crime under Colombian law, the country’s top court ruled on Monday, in a decision that paves the way for the procedure to become widely available across this historically conservative, Catholic country.

The ruling by Colombia’s Constitutional Court follows years of organizing by women across Latin America for greater protections and more rights, including access to abortion, and significant shifts in the region’s legal landscape.

Mexico’s Supreme Court decriminalized abortion in a similar decision in September and Argentina’s Congress legalized the procedure in late 2020. Colombia’s decision means that three of the four most populous countries in Latin America have now opened the door to more widespread access to abortion.

…“This puts Colombia on the vanguard in Latin America,” said Mariana Ardila, a Colombian lawyer with Women’s Link Worldwide, part of the coalition that brought one of two cases challenging the criminalization of abortion. “This is historic.”
