Marbles, Typographic experiment
If you played with marbles as a child you’ll instantly recognised the inspiration behind Mark Richardson’s recent type experiments.
Founder of design studio, Superfried, he describes the process
Whilst developing a typographic style for a US client, this route was relegated from the process. Initially it started as 3D numbers [see 100 visual, above] with a slightly organic centre. This idea still had potential, so I took everything back to flat 2D and started to develop a complete set of numerals. It was here that the forms started to become more intricate and a reminiscence to the internal patterns of classic marbles emerged.
Mark then expanded on the idea using the refined letters in his own graphic work. The first was on his Max Richter – Dream 3 sleeve submission to Secret 7"s 2016. Then, having fixed on the name Marbles and design direction, Mark said it would have been remiss not to experiment with 3D versions which he created in Cinema 4D Studio, which are eye-popping. My favourites though are the flat colour chromatic versions seen in Mark’s Euro 2016 fixtures poster.
3D Printable Type
I know there are designers working on typefaces that are optimised for 3D printing but this alphabet, by Loren Kulesus of Brooklyn, is something else entirely.
“The design uses 1mm wall thicknesses which seem to print very nicely on all 3d printers, and the simple and iterative appearance mimics heat sinks.”
Look at that ‘o’ made by joining two blocks! Very imaginative.
Sacrilege in Helvetica Bold.

Nature; the most beautiful and serene is often the most ruthless and destructive
storm mind
We lie to lovers and tell the truth to strangers, we run from peace and embrace storms, we fix the ones we love just to ruin them, because we are all a little bit mad.
Ti fa sentire debole dipendere da qualcuno.
Honey, I’m telling the truth I did something terrible in my early youth My mind went blank, I lost control I was just a little boy, I did not know I better let you go…
To find the prince you thought you found in me I better set you free and give you up Just wave and say goodbye and let you live Without a monster like me Honey, what am I to you Now I have pulled the trigger on this awful truth Oh hold me now, cause I’m burning up Sing me something beautiful, just make it stop I better let you go…
To find the prince you thought you found in me I better set you free and give you up Just wave and say goodbye and let you live Without a monster like me
