Reflective Streetwear Collaborations!
April 2021
This spring we have had the opportunity to spread reflective wear far and wide in Baltimore. We collaborated with two bike organized rides - the Bike the Sites Design for Distancing Bike Ride hosted by NDC and the Spring with BYKE Baltimore Tour hosted by BYKE and MICA Wellness.
We had a lot of fun getting to know the city (and the bike paths) better!
Reservoir Hill Bright Lane
April 2021
We finally installed the Bright Lane in Reservoir Hill - Whitelock Street and Brookfield Avenue is now a lot brighter and safer for pedestrians.
The Observations we did (pre and post install) show that drivers are much more aware and respectful to other road users because of the Bright Lane. Before install only 6 out of 21 cars yielded to pedestrians and other road users. After install 23 out 31 cars yielded. YAY!

We installed with the help of community volunteers and had a ribbon cutting ceremony visited by Mayor Brandon Scott.
Art in the Right of Way Toolkit Launch
We're excited to officially launch the Art in the Right of Way Toolkit!
The toolkit can be downloaded from madeyoulookbaltimore.org The Art in the Right of Way (ROWArt) Toolkit is a step-by-step guide for Baltimore communities that want to install traffic calming art in their neighborhoods. The Toolkit, created in collaboration with the Baltimore City Department of Transportation Community Programs, walks you through the process of installing Art in the Right of Way from beginning to end. Huge thank you to everyone who has been a part of creating and sharing feedback on the toolkit.

Toolkit Feedback
October 2020
We´ve spent the most part of this past month on gather feedback and input from community members on our toolkit. The goal is that this will be a standalone document that communities can use as guide on how to get traffic calming art installed. The feedback we are asking is, if the process makes sense and if we missed out information. The post-its are growing and we are getting a lot of really valuable insights and comments.
So far we have met and shared our toolkit draft with Highlandtown, Johnston Square, Impact Hub, Neighborhood Design Center and the Liveable Streets Coalition.
We are really excited to be able to launch this city wide in the new year. Here is to 2021!!
Onboarding Advisors and Pedestrian Experiences
October 2020
These past weeks we have spent time onboarding our community advisors for year 3 - Jasper, Akia and Graham will continue to work as partners on the project. Graham will fill the role of Transportation Advisor - helping us collaborate with BDOT to ensure the Made You Look Toolkit aligns with BDOT processes. Akia will continue to work with our Reflective Street Wear and help plan and facilitate workshops on visibility and reflective wear. Jasper will continue to help us with community contacts and feedback. We are really happy all three of our advisors are still part of the project.
We are also really enjoying to follow all the other pedestrian and bike safety initiatives that are happening around Baltimore these days. Above is the new rainbow alley at University of Baltimore and below are pictures from the Saturday when Historical Charles Street got turned into a pedestrian street. This was one of the ideas that many participants in our Shareback in fall Year 1 really wanted to see happen in Baltimore. It was such a great experience to be able to walk on Charles Street without any cars. Charles Street should be pedestrian every Saturday! (Or maybe it could rotate around the city - one neighborhood Main St being pedestrian on a Saturday or Sunday?)
Greenmount West Bright Lane!
Hey everyone We have finished the installation of the traffic calming art by open works. The intersection is really eyes catching now and the community think it is helping with driver awareness.
We can’t wait for more neighborhoods help test the right of way art toolkit we are creating !

SEPTEMBER 2020
We started the month off with attending Reservior Hill community meeting to hear traffic concerns and get volunteers for the traffic evaluation we hosted to get an idea of the traffic environment in the area.
We spend two days observing how how reacted to cars and pesdestrians to gauge how effective traffic calming could be for the intersection!
We also had the opportunity to meet with the 2020 creative place making Practice-Based Studio during class to share the this project and let know how things are going!

Evaluation of the Greenmount West Install
August 2020
We are working on an evaluation of our Bright Lane Install in Greenmount West. So far we have heard many people say “this thing really slows traffic down!”, but we wanted to know if that is was what the general community thought too.

Because of delays and the lock-down caused by Covid this spring, we did not get a chance to do the traffic observations that we had planned to do at this intersection. We knew from hearing what the community said and from walking and driving in the area, that the worn out line markings made cars speed up.
To be able to evaluate the Bright Lane we made a survey that was sent out to the Greenmount West Community through facebook, nextdoor and via newsletters. We asked for the residents opinions on the intersection before install and what had changed after the install. In total we received 30 responses.

Year 3 Kick off
July 2020
We are very excited to continue working with the Made You Look project for another year! Yay!
Year 3 will be all about publishing and distributing the Art in the Right of Way Toolkit. Our primary goal is to collaborate with Baltimore City Department of Transportation to design, test and promote a user-friendly, public-facing Made You Look Community Toolkit to equip community organizations and residents with the information and tools they need to implement their own pedestrian and bicyclist safety interventions.
Our continued work is aimed at sharing what we’ve learned with a wider audience and enabling residents across the city to take action to address pedestrian and bicyclist safety concerns in their own neighborhoods.
The Made You Look Community Toolkit is intended to be a user-friendly, public-facing document providing step-by-step guidance for community associations, organizations and residents to undertake interventions in their neighborhood to address pedestrian and bicycle safety challenges.
We are also preparing a set of workshops for next spring to be able introduce and share the Toolkit content and our lessons learned from working on this project.

Week 30: Bright Lanes Install
Finally - this first week of June - we were ready for install in Greenmount West.
The week started with testing paint colors and cutting stencils by hand. And planning and preparing for install day. Do we have enough hand sanitizer? Do we have enough food? Will the stencils work? Have we estimated enough paint? Will the paint arrive on time?
The day arrived and we received a very welcome guest from Cincinnati!
Levi jumped on a plane with very short notice to come and help with the install - Thank you!
It was 95 degrees already in the early morning Saturday and we started by masking out the lines and the hexagon patterns. We had divided the day in painting shifts and the Made You Look Family came out to help.
Thank you: Doug, Nayeli, Emerson, Lee, Maya, Eli, Cameron, Anushka, Teddy, Yoella, Quentin, Rebecca and Nate!
Graham was there with all his equipment, tools and expertise - showing us how to do this the right way. Then the painting started -
All of a sudden the painting stopped - we were on the route of the protest march. Everyone on site put their tools down and raised their hands in solidarity with George Floyd. The protesters were thanking us for the work we were doing and we were thanking them for theirs.
We had some trouble keeping the thousands of people who were marching from stepping in the wet paint - but Nayeli made a human barricade and work could go on.
On Saturday we finished all three coats of color. On Sunday - we came back to paint the white lines and remove the masking tape.
We are so happy with the finished result. And so grateful to everyone who helped make this happen.
Week 26+27 Virtual Community Meetings and Flex Posts
May 4-15
We had the pleasure of presenting the Made You Look Project to Reservoir Hill during a virtual community meeting to launch Graham Project´s new tool for gathering community input to the Whitelock Art Crosswalk Project. His toolbox can be found at makeplacehappen.com
There is a first time for everything and I struggled with sharing my screen to make the presentation (I have learnt that now!)
But is was really nice to be able to share with the community and inspiring to see people asking questions and engaging in the process in a virtual space (I really hope Coronavirus subsides soon and this is not a permanent thing though). Graham has been busy translating the input through this site to several design concepts that will be presented art the next Reservoir Hill community meeting on May 26 - 6.30PM on Zoom and Facebook. Exciting!
We also had meetings with Akia and Jasper - our other advisors, making strategies for getting the Reflective Wear out there and used by Pedestrians and Bikers. Exciting to be almost ready to launch!
Lastly, we collected our Flex-posts from National Capital Industries and are eagerly waiting for them to be installed on Greenmount Avenue. Once they are in, we can finally paint!
