There was an instant burn in her chest as she pursed her lips into a fine line, willing herself to not show just how much it hurt and how much the statement dug. Madeline had spent so long being entirely self-sufficient that the idea of someone telling her what she should and shouldnât be doing - expert or not - gave her a sense of lack of control that she absolutely hated.Â
âI suppose I canât just tell you Iâm fine, right?â Maddie whispered, avoiding her gaze for a moment before sucking in a sharp inhale so deep her lungs burned. She hated this; admitting her weaknesses, having to be vulnerable with someone if she was ever going to heal. The girl shrugged one shoulder after a moment, brows furrowed. âItâs.. probably at like a seven.â She murmured, avoiding the womanâs eyes.Â
Madeline nodded with a soft sigh when she first mentioned the exam, though the rush of pink in the doctorâs cheeks and the flustered way she explained herself caught the brunetteâs attention. For the first time in a while, a tiny coy smile found Madelineâs lips as she fought back the amusement building in her. âNow I really see the appeal of a house call.â Maddie teased, half wanting to get the woman even more flustered and half genuine in the way of her joke. The woman was gorgeous, she couldnât help it. Madeline held her side as she walked, the pressure relieving some of the pain as she guided the blonde into the house and to a second bedroom sheâd set up downstairs for night she wasnât up for going to her own.Â
âShould I â I mean, do you need my shirt off or anything? Iâm fine with it.â Madeline arched a brow at her own question as she moved to sit on the plush bed slowly, swinging her legs up and lying back. At the very least, she pulled her shirt up a bit to sit rolled up beneath her chest to expose her stomach and where her lower ribs were. While she was still very much scratched and bruised up, the bruising where her broken rib sat was by far the worst, a dark purple hue tainting a good chunk of her exposed skin. âI swear I usually look better than this.â Maddie murmured playfully, laughing at herself for a moment before hissing at the pain she received in return.Â
Watching her patientâs expression, she knew, with her years of experience in people lying about the level of pain they were in, that she was not doing well. She shook her head. âI can help you most effectively if youâre honest with me,â she said, smiling reassuringly. Not like Iâm being with you, but I donât know how to tell you youâve been sexting your doctor for the last month. âOkay, a seven,â she mused, making a mental note of it. The girl was tough. Mads liked that. Not that it matters, she thought.Â
Madison grinned as the womanâs face broke into the coy smile she had sometimes seen appearing in the borders of the photos sheâd received from her. Her cheeks burned even pinker than before at Madelineâs joking. She stuttered a bit before deciding to stay silent instead, following the girlâs lead to a room on the first floor that decidedly was not the room sheâd seen in the background of Stellaâs portraits. Perhaps a guest room, repurposed now so that she didnât need to climb the stairs. Mads wasnât usually this easily flustered, and in normal circumstances â though nothing about this was normal â wouldâve flirted right back at a pretty womanâs joke. Now, everything was unsure. She knew she had to tell Madison, but wasnât sure when the right moment would be, or if there ever was one.Â
âNo, you should be able to keep it on,â she said, somewhat regretfully. She knew it would likely hurt even more for her to raise her arms up to take off the shirt. âIf youâre okay with me moving it around or reaching under to examine you?â Mads sat on the edge of the bed, schooling her face into one of cool calm as she took in the purple-tinged skin. Taking off her sweatshirt, she placed it on the bed post and smoothed out the short-sleeve shirt she wore underneath. Time for work, Mads. She grabbed hand sanitizer out of her bag and squirted a bit of it onto her hands, rubbing them together to clean them but also warm them up a bit â she didnât want them to be too cold when she went to touch Madeline. Running her fingers over the area, she traced each bone, careful not to press harder than necessary on the bruised areas. It was beginning to heal nicely, despite its outer appearance.Â
Looking up, she brushed back a curtain of blonde hair and tucked it behind her ear. Edging up the bed, she sat next to Madelineâs head, her fingers brushing back the womanâs hair so she could get a better look at the gashes she had bandaged at the hospital, and wow. Being this close to her, in a bed that wasnât a hospital bed, but still being unable to tell her who she was, was a lot. âLooks good,â she murmured, maybe talking about the wounds healing, maybe talking about the girl laying under her.Â
