what "death of the author" means:

a lot of people think the only point of engagement with art is just to decode exactly what the author was trying to say, and their intent is the "real meaning," and once you've figured out the real meaning you're done you've solved it. that's dumb and boring. don't do that.

things death of the author does not mean:

every interpretation is equally valid

you are forbidden to treat what we can know or reasonably guess about the author's intentions as something that matters to your interpretation at all

the only valid way to interpret fiction is to treat it like it's a documentary of events that really happened and never think about it in terms of "why would the creator, a human person, choose to present it this way"

authors shouldn't get to have opinions about what they intended to say through their work, they should shut up and let me tell them what it means because i know better

actually i, the person reading or watching or viewing this art, am the infallible source of real meaning, and everybody who disagrees with me is wrong including but not limited to the author

After sharing in my recent Top 5 video of my most anticipated August manga releases, I thought it would be fun to feature a few more that aren't ALL debuts! 🤭

Let's dive into why I'm stoked for these shoujo & josei releases and why they should be on your radar! 😍

Maybe it's odd to feature a FINAL volume of a series, but it's why I wanted to include Pet Shop of Horrors: Collector's Edition because that means it's time for a binge read! 🤩

I haven't been collecting the series, but I have wanted to try it and think my library has it!

I have DEEPLY enjoyed reading Love, That's an Understatement digitally! So much so that I've been double-dipping and buying the volumes physically too!

Seeing volume six release this month has me downright giddy because I'm READY to be back with these characters! 🤩

While I'm behind on the physical releases, seeing a new volume of My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 had me cheering!! 🥳

I really really love this cover of Yamada, and I'm so excited for us fans to hold a new volume soon! 🥰

One of the new debuts that I wanted to make sure was featured was Half is More!

This sounds like it will be very thought-provoking and probably angering too because of how the heroine is treated! 😤 I'm bracing myself for a "deeper" read than what I usually dive into!

And last but not least, another manga debut called Hand in Hand with Mu-chan: Lessons from My Autistic Daughter!

This sounds like it will be an emotional read, but also a happy one too I think? Definitely another series that's outside my usual reads, but I'm eager to try! 🤩

Tiger found caged in abandoned home gets second chance at wildlife sanctuary: ‘He seems to be so happy’

The estimated 350-pound tiger was transported to the facility, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, on Wednesday afternoon, and is settling in well, Almrud said. There, he will have the chance to roam in enclosures of up to three acres.

Almrud, who estimates him to be about 2 years old, described the moment he first walked onto the grass at the sanctuary as remarkable.

“It was just amazing to see him walk out on grass and to see him explore and have that freedom of movement,” she said. “It was just such a reward and fulfilling to us.”

Now, he spends his days rolling around the grass in glee, Almrud said.

“He comes right up to the fence every time a staff member is present,” she said. “He seems very amenable to our presence.”

The tiger is eating well – a combination of chicken, humanely raised non-processed beef and whole prey complete with organs and bones. It appears that he was being fed chicken, which is what owners of exotic cats often feed them, but chicken alone does not provide the complete nutrition they need to thrive, Almrud said.

In addition, caregivers are tasked with keeping the tiger mentally stimulated by creating “pretend hunting” games and rotating him through different areas so he has access to new smells and environments to explore.

“He seems to happy and content,” Almrud said. “Our staff is just falling in love with him.”

His name is Loki now! In June he celebrated his 7th birthday at the sanctuary where he lives and thrives. Here’s a few pics of the boy:

another post for the young artists out there:

the temptation to start commissions is strong and i see a lot of people on art subs asking if they are "ready". here's the secret: you are ready for commissions when you have a significant number of people asking, unprompted, if you take commissions. opening at any point before that is going to be a motivation-breaking battle against the algorithm.

people asking you if you take commissions is not the same as people telling you "you should sell your art". these are well-intentioned words of encouragement from idiots who love you. someone saying "i would buy it" is also not the same-- that's a load-bearing 'would' that hides a secret 'if'.

turning your art into a business is a skill unto itself and not one you should worry about developing before your product is refined into something with an actual demand. i'll keep saying it until my breath runs out: banish the grindset demons, you are not losing money by not monetizing your hobbies. stop it. i'll get the rolled-up newspaper. i will.

the other thing about Internet dogpiling is that it is just not possible to think clearly during the acute stages. it’s so easy to criticize people for responding defensively or tactlessly to mass criticism but I cannot overstate the degree to which your brain becomes a rat in a trap. I think we do have to temporarily recalibrate our expectations in these circumstances and accept that they do not necessarily represent how that person responds to criticism. the skills for self-regulating and reacting to normal interpersonal criticism are not the same skills needed to respond to viral callouts.
