Personal Note: This blog post is one that Sou wrote after experiencing a large controversy stemming from his collaboration video with Kurokumo. Sou’s extreme “fans” had begun to spam Sou & Kurokumo’s videos with hate comments and send Kurokumo threats after the upload, but when Sou spoke up about it, the situation only blew up larger and Sou was blamed for his “ungrateful behavior” to his fans. It was extremely difficult to translate this post b/c it was filled with his remorseful feelings yet I personally did not think Sou did anything wrong & hate that he has to apologize like this, so I had been postponing it until now. Although we are international fans, please do take Sou and every other utaites’ feelings in consideration when you act in public spaces and do not think that they owe you anything for being a fan or supporting them, because that is your decision. Utaites have their own friends and personal lives, so please don’t treat them only as objects and lash out at their collaborators, friends, or even lovers!

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening.

It is my first time writing a blog post, but what I will be addressing is not a very fun topic. I’m sorry. I believe there will be people who do not want to see this, so for those, please click the “back” button on your browser here.   The reason why I am writing such a blog, is because I have something to convey to everyone. Some of you may think, am I going to keep dragging this on even though I even had a live broadcast (for the matter), but since I feel like it won’t end at this rate, I have decided to write in detail about it. I will be writing about a variety of topics so it may end up being rather long, but I’d appreciate if you could read until the end. I believe there are also people who do not know about the situation, so I’d like to explain what happened briefly. Those who already know do not have to read it.

Hi anon and welcome to the fandom! :DSo “yakedo” is hard to translate because it doesn’t really have one “meaning” haha. It doesn’t mean “y’all” but… actually let me start with where it came from first, to explain.IIRC about two years ago Mafu posted a group picture from a concert like XYZ or something and mistakenly tagged Luz as another utaite. Luz’s response was “Luz yakedo…” which in English is kinda like “Actually, I’m Luz…” (but written in his Fukui dialect) People thought his response was so funny that everyone started saying it and it even trended on Twitter in Japan :P Now it’s like his catchphrase but I never know how to translate it because keeping “yakedo” as “Actually,” doesn’t always quite make sense depending on how it’s being used in context…D-did that help at all? ;~; Let me know if you’re still confused! :P

I only just joined the fandom this year, so I was wondering; has Mafu always been as like, depressed as he is now? Or was it just the Suzumu/bullying events (I personally think they're one in the same) that made him this way?

Hello anon!Actually I would say he has been much more depressed in the past than he is now, as far as with what he shares publicly. Things seem to have been going really well for him for the last year or two, but of course there are internal factors that can cause people to be depressed too. The Suzumu stuff was really really hard on him, and I think he described part of that situation as the lowest point in his life, but he’s also talked about how he’s always been fairly depressed, lonely, not having many friends, etc. all through his life. But now he has good friends who really care about his well-being, and he’s basically living his dream that he never thought was possible by becoming a very successful musician. There’s a lot more positive things in his life from what I can see, and in the years I’ve been a fan of his I definitely feel like he’s a happier person now than he used to be. Again, depression issues and such don’t just magically go away when good stuff happens, and he is just kind of a dark person in general, but from my perspective he seems to be doing better than the past. And he has said the same things, actually! After his last big concert in his first ever solo tour this year, he spoke to the audience about how hard things were for him in the past, but now thanks to all his fans he can sell out huge venues with his performances, and how he feels better about himself and is happy now. I can only speak from my own observations from the last 3 years or so, so take what I said with a grain of salt, but I hope this was a bit helpful to read anyway? Maybe not… :P

Original interview here After the Rain sat down with director Satou Tatsuo to discuss the production of the anime Atom: The Beginning’s opening theme “Kaidoku Funou” for the website Natalie.mu. They spoke about the music, lyrics, and the ways in which Director Satou asked them to include things or change parts of their song. It was a really interesting read so I went ahead and translated it. Emma, I just really want to ask, i hope I'm not being rude or anything :O but isn't it unfair that just because we're utaite fans and that we already like him as mafumafu, we can't show our support to him in his other works? That we're not allowed to share/retweet his other works that also involves other people? I'm sorry again if this sounds rude, that isn't my intention at all ;;;

Hello anon. Just to be clear, you’re talking about works that Mafumafu is a part of that don’t use the name “Mafumafu,” right? Because you’re always welcome to share his works that are done under the name “Mafumafu.”Perhaps you just don’t know that Mafumafu has asked on multiple occasions for his fans to keep his other non-Mafumafu works quiet, and has given lengthy explanations for why he wants us to do that (although tbh I feel like if he asks a very simple thing of the fandom, the least we can do is listen to his request even if he doesn’t give a firm reason…).There’s a few reasons he has asked for privacy with this. First, he has a lot of doubts over whether or not he’s actually a skilled enough musician to be as successful as he is, and he worries that maybe the reason he’s able to work as a musician is just because he’s popular already under the name “Mafumafu.” By separating himself from the utaite fandom for certain works, he can build confidence that his music is good enough to be supported by people who don’t already like him. Of course, this goes away once the utaite fandom discovers his other names, and he’ll just have doubts again about whether or not he’s only achieving success due to people who support “Mafumafu.” Second, he is so busy with all his work as Mafumafu that he feels like he doesn’t have time to learn new musical skills anymore, so working under different names is like a way to try new things and, in his words, relieve the stress that comes from being Mafumafu and working on NND and stuff. He says that in his mind, his Mafu work and non-Mafu work are very separate things, and he wants to keep them private because it helps him unwind from all the other things he does in his crazy schedule. And third, he has just said that for personal reasons he doesn’t think his name should be associated with some of the things he writes for, like it will be a distraction for fans of a series and such.  Of course we all love Mafu and you’re welcome to enjoy and support any of his non-Mafu works in ways that don’t draw attention to them from people in the utaite fandom. He constantly works so hard for us and always reduces his own profits from his works just so he can make the prices as low as possible and affordable for us fans, which is why I don’t think we should do anything less than be completely respectful when he asks us to do a small thing that helps him. I’m not saying this to guilt trip you or anything, especially if you just didn’t know any of this, but I think when he asks us for something as easy as “Please keep my other works private (because I don’t want them being known in the utaite fandom)” we should instantly have no problem respecting that wish. He gave very reasonable explanations for his thoughts on that too. It’s not like he hates the utaite fandom and wants to run away from them or anything lol, but actions like sharing/RTing other works in the fandom come with the consequences of exposing those identities to the fandom members who also might RT/share, and then it just gets out of control and becomes common knowledge in the fandom which he doesn’t want. That’s why it’s safest to do exactly what Mafu asked and keep things to yourself without infringing on the distance he wants to keep between his other works and his identity as Mafumafu.Sorry I wrote a whole novel here. Anyway, I hope that helped a bit…

Hello...!! So I'm a little bit confused over what happens in the "I want to become a super nuko" PV when the boy's hair becomes white and there are a bunch of people's faces crossed out. Could I ask for your interpretation? (o^^o)

Hi anon!I must confess that… I’ve only had a very loose interpretation of the video for that song, and after rewatching it a few times tonight I’m not sure if I agree with my original interpretation anymore :P So I googled around a bit in Japanese to see what others were saying. There’s no one who claims to have a really good understanding of it, but the general consensus is that it’s probably linked to some of the darker things that Mafu writes about in his other songs. Some people think the whole song might be metaphors for things that have happened to him, like the news report at the beginning with the stolen sardines and the culprit being on the loose, and how that might be a reference to Mafu’s past of having had his music stolen and still to this day not being credited for it. That interpretation is just speculation, however Mafu said he wrote Berserk about that incident, and I think the “two Mafus” from Berserk can actually be seen in this video? There’s the normal white hair/red eyes Mafu like you pointed out, then around 3:28 the main boy seems to turn into black hair/red eyes Mafu from Berserk. Overall my best guess is that it has to do with the theme of Mafumafu’s “other selves” that appear in Berserk. While there’s the part of him that wants to live a carefree, happy, cute cat life, there’s the real him that can’t become a cat and has been subjected to many cruelties in “human society.” All these bad things that have happened in his past might be being shown as the beat-up dolls that represent other “selves” of his too? Like how he talks about his past lives in the lyrics. Just like the boy in the PV can’t be an innocent cat, Mafumafu can’t be an innocent/carefree person because the real him has had all these bad things happened that have changed who he is. That’s why the boy himself is shown to literally be Mafu, I think? It’d also explain why the boy’s eyes are different colors in normal form, representing the conflict he feels and how he’s built out of having “multiple selves.” Remember that this is 100% my speculation or speculation I borrowed from the internet. I can’t specifically think about a time when he’s spoken about the lyrics, so nothing written here about what the song really means is “canon” :P And even if this interpretation is true… I think there’s still a lot more going on in some of the more puzzling parts of the lyrics that I can’t really make sense of…. gosh though, I’d really love to hear what he has to say about it!!

Hi Emma! Just wanna ask how do you explain utaite to your friends who don't know abt them. Because I talk abt utaite with my friends occasionally and they'll ask things like how do you like someone without knowing who they look like? And I always reply them with a it doesn't matter how they look like because they can sing ww Personally what do you think? And I'm curious on how you met utaite

Hi anon! :) I usually describe them as just regular people that like to sing, who uploaded their song covers online as a hobby, and gradually gained a ton of fame/popularity on the internet because they’re so good at singing. They hide their faces and real identities most of the time because they want to be able to live a normal life as well, and don’t want to become celebrities or anything that would affect their everyday lives (Like Hannah Montana if that comparison helps www……. it might not help….)Ah and I started listening to utaite about 3+ years ago or so, when I discovered a bunch by listening to their covers of Kagepro songs! :) I particularly liked Soraru’s voice because of how unique and memorable it was so I kinda picked him to listen to the most at first, and it spread out from there~ (but it didn’t spread out a ton tbh ww) Anyway I hope my answer was helpful :D
