I’ve been a little obsessed with big cats lately.. I really, really want to spend a couple months on a nature reserve somewhere (in a volunteer capacity) and care for our big cats. Like a gap year type of thing…

Maybe after I do this, I can finally do that iconic African safari buzz I’ve been lusting for some time now.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to see an elephant up close. And lately, the idea of making that childish ambition materialise has consumed me somewhat.

I mean, I’m older now.. Am making a little money.. It’s totally do-able, when I think about it. So I’ve started some investigations...

Some family of mine have decided to visit South Africa - during the friggen winetr no less - and it seems I have become the appointed tour guide. 

Not that I mind! Of course.. It's just... What does one do during winter in Cape Town?

Loads! Like shark cage diving - it's a bit pricey but an experience that is worth every penny.

I *need* to see these amazing dunes for myself. Preferably via fancy luxury train journey, but I mean: Student life = Poor life

'Stay away from the red sand', is what my mother would always tell me. And being the bright-eyed good little girl that I was, I listened - because mother's know best. I would spend days admiring the burnt saffron coloured dust, imagining what the bright powder could possibly feel like, smell like - even its taste!

It’s just sand, of course, but to my childish old mind these dunes were not only mysterious and mythical, but sinister too.

"Stay away from the red sand, because if you wander too close, a big toothless mouth will appear and swallow you whole!" 

"Stay away from the red sand - that’s where the desert people live. Their skin is tangerine and their hair is white - blanched from the hot sun! - and their favourite food is little boys and girls."

I heard ‘em all - and believed it for a long time too. Until the rebel in me flourished and I gingerly began to edge closer to the dunes for some investigation of my own. Little did I know that I, too, was being investigated.

Save the Great White Shark

The Great White is regarded with apathy merely because it is an apex predator, however, that is the exact reason why it needs to be protected.

You know me - I can’t go a few days without finding some interesting info on-the-line about sharks. This one’s a presentation :)
