“C’mon, we should practice our dance moves for the big night. That, and I managed to get through my potions assignment without destroying a cauldron.” Gemma couldn’t help doing a happy victory dance.

“Oh, but I can’t dance at all,” Maggie laughed.  “It’d be easier to get a hippogryff to dance. Congratulations on your potions. Cauldrons everywhere are grateful and sighing with relief.”

“You’re welcome. I agree with you there. This place used to be nice and quiet and it’s gotten worse with all the people here now. Well I don’t mind, I’m not as bad as people like to think. Working on anything interesting?” 

“It’s like, there are better places to socialize than here. Why don’t they just hang out in the great yard? Or the grounds are pretty nice.” She shrugged. “Not really. Just the usual school stuff.”

“Oh…sorry. It’s not taken, you can sit. I promise I won’t bite,” she gave her a small smile. 

“Thanks. I swear the library’s been more crowded lately. I can’t ever seem to find a place to sit.”

Everleigh was minding her own business occupying one of the spots in the library. Her eyes just glazed over the pages as she read before she noticed a shadow above her. “Can I help you?” she asked finally looking up at whoever it was.  

“I”m just looking for a place to sit,” Maggie said. “I guess this table is taken then...”

“Splendid!” Halcyon cheer, with an over-exaggerated motion. “Wonderful. Makes ya options a wee bit higher. So much ta choose from, aye? Have ya got ya eye on any in particular? Or perhaps a type? Blonds? Redheads? One’s with a fiery passion?” His eyes were filled with innocent mischief. “What kind of bird? ‘S it okay?”

“Well, the more options, the better,” She laughed. “I don’t have anybody particular in mind, but um, I like dark hair, and maybe somebody mysterious, like someone in one of those young adult novels. I’m not sure what kind of bird it was, but it was alright. That’s what made it so interesting. It just hit it and flew away like nothing happened. Can you imagine that!”

“Do what you gotta do.” He shrugged. “True. Does this mean you’ll give me a shout out in your book when you get published?

“Maybe. But first you’d have to tell me your name. Otherwise it’ll be dedicated to ‘that guy who once gave me writing advice in a spare classroom.’“

“Eh, ya don’t need ta know. All ya need to know is what ya feelin’ when ya see or talk ta someone ya like. The labels and all of that are just semantics, bonnie.” Halycon couldn’t help himself when it came to matters of the heart. Well…matters of everyone else’s heart. He didn’t have the best track record himself, but rooted for anyone and everyone around him. “I cannot think of a subject that doesn’t matter. Give me some examples, aye?”

“Okay. Well then, right now it’s both,” Maggie confirmed. “Um...” She wracked her brain, coming up with a list of things that people had told her to be quiet about in the last month. “Um, cartoons, that cool bird I saw fly into the whomping willow, my petition to lower the age range of the triwizard tournament.”

“That seems what you’ve decided to do.” Maybe that was the thing for him—Dmitri didn’t like having to fake anything. He’d much rather take credit when credit was due, and failures made him stronger, even if that didn’t feel good. “Or yeah, that’s probably even faster than asking around. There must be a ton there.”

“Well simply making it’s not working for me, so I have to fake it,” Maggie confessed. “I don’t see any other option. Definitely. And I probably don’t have to ask to borrow them. That’s what they’re there for!”

if you could be another person for a day, who would that be?

“YOu know, I’ve thought about this a lot. I think normally I’d go for somebody famous, like the minster of magic, or Harry Potter, but I think it really depends on if I get to choose what day it happens on. Because, like, if I got to choose the day, I could switch places with one of the Triwizard champions and get to see what that was like, and that’d be really cool, but if I didn’t get to choose, I might just get stuck in class, or if I chose the minister, cabinet meetings or something. I want to do something exciting.”

   “I hated learning cursive. I’m not going to lie that I was rubbish at it. I mean, I’m good now but that’s only because of the endless hours of torture.” He laughed.

“My mum says the only reason you need cursive is to do your signature. I liked learning it, because I thought it looked pretty, but it’s so hard to read.”

“So would everyone else, but that rarely happens the first time. Sounds like extra work just to fool the world.” Dmitri wasn’t going to push it though since it wasn’t about him or something he personally cared about. “I just meant asking around could be faster.”

“I mean, you “have to fake it ‘til you make it’ as the saying goes,” She shrugged. “Besides, Pseudonyms aren’t that hard to come up with. Oh, yeah, I guess you’re right. You know, I bet the muggle studies classroom has some.”

Halcyon tilted his head. Obviously, he had to help the girl. “Wha’s ya flavor, bonnie? Boy? Girl? Both? Somethin’ else? Or do ya have a specific person in ya mind?” He couldn’t help but take up any chance he could to play cupid. “Talkin’ ‘s nice. What’s wrong with talkin’? Shows that ya’ve got brains in ya head and shoes on ya feet.”

“Both... I think. To be honest I’ve never thought it about in depth,” Maggie shrugged. She avoided his eyes, doodling a pygmy puff in her notebook.’ “Yeah, that’s what I think but the things I talk about are things nobody else really cares about,  things that don’t really matter.”

“But if you’re rejected, imagine the satisfaction you’ll feel when you get published elsewhere. You’ll be proving those bastards wrong. Hm, that’s not a bad strategy. Those muggles will think you’re so original. I’m sure if you ask around, someone will have some magizines on them.”

“That sounds nice... but I’d rather to get it right the first time,” Maggie admitted, brushing her hair behind her ear. “I’ll just come up with new pseudonyms until work. Then people will be impressed that I did it right ‘the first time.’ Oh, I don’t have to ask around. I’ll just write my mum and she’ll probably send me some. My mum’s a muggle, even though my dad’s a wizard. They grew up together.”

“Why a pseudonym?” Dmitri was the type who liked to take credit for his hard work, well, whenever he actually put effort into something. “You have all you need if you wrote something based on your experiences here. Especially with three schools together. Use the tournament for ideas and twist it to make it scarier.”

“well that way, if it gets rejected, than no one knows it was really me,” Maggie said. “Ooh that’s a good idea. And if I send it into a muggle magazine, they’ll think it’s really creative. I’ll have to ask my aunt what all the cool muggle magazines are these days.”

“Oh, ‘m sure that’s no problem at all! I reckon there’s someone. Though, it’ll be rough if they’re of the shy sort, hmm? There lies the rub.”

“Well... it’s not so much that they’re shy... I’m just not.... good at... flirting?” Maggie said, her face turning red. “I talk too much.”

“Your Uncle George is the one with the joke shop, right? He’d totally be into it. I don’t remember which one Charlie is. You’re so lucky to have such a big family!”
